A - Best Ans
B - had implies an action that finished in the past, that's not the intend in the comparison.
C - "that there was an elephant" - Is the elephant not there any more?
D - Awkward - gives rides and was earning... It was earning not through the rides but through some other source
E - Complex because in this and structure you try and compare the jobs and earnings of Barbara and the Elephant.

Are we not comparing the earnings of Barbara and elephant,i guess this is what Barbara intends to say that elephant's earning was comparable to her's earning.Hence i marked E.
