wheat>rice
not logically correct IMO E:
Oats have more nutritional value than wheat

Wheat has more nutritional value than rye. But since oats have more nutritional value than rice, it follows that wheat has more nutritional value than rice.

Any of the following, if introduced into the argument as an additional premise, makes the argument above logically correct EXCEPT:

A. Wheat and oats have the same nutritional value.
B. Rye has more nutritional value than oats.
C. Rye has more nutritional value than rice.
D. Rye and oats have the same nutritional value.

Given in the context of nutritional value:
Wheat > Rye
Oats > Rice --> Thus --> Wheat > Rice

So possible scenarios are -
1. Wheat > Rye > Oats > Rice
2. Wheat > Oats > Rye > Rice
3. Wheat > Rye = Oats > Rice
4. Wheat = Oats > Rye > Rice

A. Wheat and oats have the same nutritional value. - WRONG. Does not contradicts statement.
B. Rye has more nutritional value than oats. - WRONG. Does not contradicts statement.
C. Rye has more nutritional value than rice. - WRONG. Does not contradicts statement.
D. Rye and oats have the same nutritional value. - WRONG. Does not contradicts statement.
E. Oats have more nutritional value than wheat - CORRECT. Contradicts statement.
Option E has possibilities as follows:
Oats > Wheat > Rye > Rice
Oats > Wheat > Rice > Rye
Oats > Rice > Wheat > Rye which invalidates the condition of argument by breaking the logic.

Alternatively, 'Since' in the argument signifies a must be true condition(causal relationship) here. So, option directly/indirectly contradicting the condition is the correct answer. Hence without even thinking about possible conditions also we can find the answer.

Answer E.

E is my answer.

Oats>Rice,
So, Wheat>Rice

This is possible only when (1) Oats=Wheat or (2) Wheat >Oats.
If Wheat <Oats, we can not certainly say Wheat>Rice.

Oats=Wheat (Given in option)
Definitely, Wheat> Rice

B. Rye has more nutritional value than oats.
Since Wheat>Rye (Given in prompt)
Rye>Oats (Given in option)
Oats>Rice (Given in prompt)
So, Wheat>Rye>Oats>Rice
Definitely, Wheat> Rice

C. Rye has more nutritional value than rice.
Since Wheat>Rye (Given in prompt)
Rye>Rice (Given in option)
So, Wheat>Rye>Rice
Definitely, Wheat> Rice
D. Rye and oats have the same nutritional value.
Since Wheat>Rye (Given in prompt)
Rye=Oats (Given in option)
Oats>Rice (Given in prompt)
So, Wheat>Rye>Rice
Definitely, Wheat> Rice

E. Oats have more nutritional value than wheat
Oats>Rice (Given in prompt)
Oats>Wheat (Given in option)
So, we can not certainly say Wheat>Rice Three situations are possible.
(1) Wheat=Rice
(2) Wheat<Rice
(3) Wheat>Rice

So my answer is E

Competition Mode Question

Wheat has more nutritional value than rye. But since oats have more nutritional value than rice, it follows that wheat has more nutritional value than rice.

Any of the following, if introduced into the argument as an additional premise, makes the argument above logically correct EXCEPT:

A. Wheat and oats have the same nutritional value.
B. Rye has more nutritional value than oats.
C. Rye has more nutritional value than rice.
D. Rye and oats have the same nutritional value.
E. Oats have more nutritional value than wheat

Official Explanation:

Correct Answer: E

The best answer is E. The question asks for a different premise that does not make the argument logically correct. Choice A leaves open the possibility that the conclusion of the argument is false.
