m + w + c = 240

we know ....
m = w + 20
m + w = c + 20

rearranging....
m+m-20+2m-40 = 240

m = 75.. OA is B

A picnic attracts 240 persons. There are 20 more men than women, and 2 [#permalink]
m+(m-20)+(m+m-20-20)=240

4m=300, so m=75

A) 240

E) 200

Adult + Children = 240
Let, Children = y
then, Adult = y+20
i.e. y+(y+20) = 240
i.e. y = 110
i.e. Adult = 110+20 = 130

Adults include only Men and Women

i.e. Men + Women = 130

Let women, W = x
then Men, M = x+20

i.e. x+(x+20) = 2x+20 = 130
i.e. x = 55

i.e. Men, M = 55+20 = 75

240 = Adults+ Children

240 = ( Children+20 )+ Children

220 = 2 (Children )

Children = 110
Adults = 130

Now, it is given
Quote:
There are 20 more men than women

Adults = Men + Women

130 = Men + Women

130 = (Women + 20 )+ Women

110 = 2 ( Women )

Women = 55

So, Men = Women + 20

Or, Men = 55 + 20

So, Men = 75

Answer is definitely (B)

# OF MEN W+20
# OF WOMEN W

# OF CHILDREN C
# OF ADULTS C+20

C+C+20 = 240

2C+20=240

# OF CHILDREN = 110

# OF ADULTS = 240-110 = 130

W+20+W = 130

2W+20=130

2W =110

# OF WOMAN = 55

# OF MEN = 55+20 = 75

Maybe I am being picky, but can't children be counted as men or women? Or those terms are exclusively used for adults?

Let # adults = A

Adults are composed of Men (M) and Women (W)

Let # children = C

A + C = 240

“20 more adults than children”

A = 20 + C ——> substitute above

(20 + C) + C = 240

C = 110

A = 130

Out of the adults, “there are 20 more men than women”

M + W = A = 130

M = 20 + W ——-> substitute above

(20 + W) + W = 130

W = 55

M = 55 + 20 = 75

M = # of Men = 75 — is the answer

Re: A picnic attracts 240 persons. There are 20 more men than women, and 2 [#permalink]
Given: A picnic attracts 240 persons. There are 20 more men than women, and 20 more adults than children.

Asked: How many men are at this picnic?

Let men, women and children at the picnic be m, w & c respectively.

A picnic attracts 240 persons.
m + w + c = 240

There are 20 more men than women
m = 20 + w

There are 20 more adults than children.
m + w = 20 + c

20 + c + c = 240
c = 110

m + w = 20 + 2w = 130
w = 55

m = 20 + 55 = 75

A picnic attracts 240 persons. There are 20 more men than women, and 20 more adults than children. How many men are at this picnic?

In this problem. There are 4 Variables

"M" for Men
"W" for Women
"A" for Adult
"C" for Children

Lets convert the sentences into algebraic form

1. There are 20 more men than women
i.e. M=W+20 (or) W=M-20

2. There are 20 more adults than children

here adults indirectly means Men & Women that means A=M+W

i.e A=C+20 (or) C=A-20
hence C=M+W-20
Substitute (W=M-20)
C=M+M-20-20
C=2M-40

3. Total no. of people in park is 240
i.e. M+W+C=240

M+M-20+2M-40=240

4M-60=240

4M=300

M=300/4=75

M=75
