Re: Following several years of declining advertising sales, the Greenville [#permalink]
Basically, shifting from location-based approach to industry-specific approach = sales increase

In assessing whether the improvement in advertising sales can properly be attributed to the reorganization, it would be helpful to find out each of the following EXCEPT:

A. Two years ago, what proportion of the Greenville Times’s total revenue was generated by advertising sales?
Not sure what this has to do with anything. Come back.

B. Has the circulation of the Greenville Times increased substantially in the last two years?
So is this paper being moved around better than before (i.e., presumably, more exposure)? So thus, this could increase sales. Skeptical, but this seems like you can actually assess the conclusion based on this info. That is, it would weaken it if it’s yes. 3rd element.

C. Has there been a substantial turnover in personnel in the advertising sales force over the last two years?
New people? Not the new approach that’s helped sales? Probs very important info.

D. Before the reorganization, had sales representatives found it difficult to keep up with relevant developments in all the types of businesses to which they were assigned?
This strengthens. It further supports the approach that they took was the right move. People were lost so they became more systematic in their approach.

E. Has the economy in Greenville and the surrounding regions been growing rapidly over the last two years?
3rd factor. It would remove it or add onto it. Depending on answer would weaken (if yes) /strengthen (if no)

Let's make sure we understand the given information:

  • The Greenville Times (GT) had several years of declining advertising sales. During that time, "the sales force was organized geographically, with some sales representatives concentrating on city-center businesses and others concentrating on different outlying regions."
  • Then, GT reorganized its advertising sales force by "having each sales representative deal with only one type of industry or of retailing." The goal of this reorganization was "to increase the sales representatives' knowledge of clients' businesses."
  • After the reorganization, revenue from advertising sales increased.

Was the subsequent increase in revenue from advertising sales a result of the reorganization? In answering that question, it would be helpful to find out each of the following EXCEPT (in other words, eliminate choices representing information that would be helpful):

Quote:
(A) Two years ago, what proportion of the Greenville Time's total revenue was generated by advertising sales

We are trying to explain an increase in revenue from advertising sales, not a change to the proportion of GT's total revenue generated by advertising sales. This information would be irrelevant, so keep choice (A).

Quote:
(B) Has the circulation of the Greenville Times increased substantially in the last two years

If the circulation of GT had increased substantially, we would expect that revenue from advertising sales would have also increased, regardless of whether the reorganization had any effect. Knowing this information would be helpful in determining whether the increase in revenue from advertising sales was a result of the reorganization, so eliminate (B).

Quote:
(C) Has there been a substantial turnover in personnel in the advertising sales force over the last 2 years

If GT replaced many of their sales representatives, then the increase in revenue from advertising sales could have been a result of the change in personnel and NOT a result of the reorganization (i.e. perhaps the new sales representatives were better at their jobs than the old representatives were). Knowing this information would be helpful, so eliminate (C).

Quote:
D. Before the reorganization, had sales representatives found it difficult to keep up with relevant developments in all types of businesses to which they are assigned?

The goal of this reorganization was "to increase the sales representatives' knowledge of clients' businesses." In other words, rather than having to deal with a wide variety of businesses in a given geography, perhaps representatives could then thoroughly study one type of industry or retailing. This might allow the representatives to increase their knowledge of their clients' businesses.

However, what if, prior to the reorganization, the sales representatives had NOT found it difficult to keep up with relevant developments in all types of businesses to which they were assigned? In that case, the apparent benefit of the reorganization would have been unnecessary, and the reorganization probably would not have had an effect on revenue from advertising sales. Knowing this information would be helpful, so eliminate (D).

Quote:
E. Has the economy in Greenville and the surrounding regions been growing rapidly over the last two years?

A growth in the economy in Greenville might explain the increase in revenue from advertising sales. In order to rule out this possibility, it would be helpful to find out the answer to this question, so eliminate (E).

(A) is the best answer.

What exactly do we need to do in "evaluate questions"?

Following several years of declining advertising sales, the Greenville [#permalink]
Quote:
Following several years of declining advertising sales, the Greenville Times reorganized its advertising sales force two years ago. Before reorganization, the sales force was organized geographically, with some sales representatives concentrating on city-center businesses and others concentrating on different outlying regions. The reorganization attempted to increase the sales representatives' knowledge of clients' businesses by having each sales representative deal with only one type of industry or of retailing. After the reorganization, revenue from advertising sales increased.

In assessing whether the improvement in advertising sales can properly be attributed to the reorganization, it would be most helpful to find out which of the following EXCEPT:

The question is saying that Greenville reorganized it sales force from focusing on specific geographies to an organization where sales personnel would focus on only one industry or retailing as individuals and not worry about the geography. For this question, note that we need to find a choice that doesn’t affect the argument. This is basically an Evaluate argument in which we figure out the one choice that doesn’t affect the argument on either extreme.

Quote:
(A) Two years ago, what proportion of the Greenville Time's total revenue was generated by advertising sales

Is this relevant? Even if we knew that the total revenue was a very low or high proportion of advertising sales, would it add any support for how the sales increased? We already know sales have increased and we are specifically focusing on why they did! This sounds like the answer.

Quote:
(B) Has the circulation of the Greenville Times increased substantially in the last two years

If the circulation itself has increased dramatically, then it might not be the organization that increased sales but the fact that so many ppl have the newspaper in their hands. If the circulation did not increase dramatically, then we are more convinced that it was the re-org that helped increase sales.

Quote:
(C) Has there been a substantial turnover in personnel in the advertising sales force over the last 2 years

If there has been substantial turnover, then it might be the personnel rather than the re-org that caused the increase. Again, if there wasn’t a substantial turnover and the workforce remained the same, then we would be more convinced of the re-org as the cause of the increase.

Quote:
(D) Before the reorganization, had sales representatives found it difficult to keep up with relevant developments in all types of businesses to which they are assigned?

If they did have trouble focusing on multiple business and now they don’t, that could be an indication that the re-org helped! But if they were able to focus on different business comfortably, then the re-org might not have had any effect!

Quote:
(E) Has the economy in Greenville and the surrounding regions been growing rapidly over the last two years?

This one seem like a bit of a stretch but generally, if the economy is suddenly doing well, people are more likely to buy GREENVILLE TIMES and that could be a valid reason for why sales increased instead of the re-org. On the flip side, if the economy stayed the same, that is another valid reason that is eliminated and adds more confidence in the re-org as the cause of the increase.

A is the correct answer

If we omit from the question stem above the word EXCEPT, we get:
In assessing whether the improvement in advertising sales can properly be attributed to the reorganization, it would be helpful to find out which of the following?
Four of the five answer choices will STRENGTHEN or WEAKEN the conclusion that the reorganization is responsible for the improvement in ad sales.
Eliminate these four answer choices.
The correct answer will be the REMAINING answer choice.

Here, the answer choices are phrased as QUESTIONS.
To see more easily which answer choices strengthen or weaken the conclusion, rephrase the answer choices as STATEMENTS.

B: The circulation of the Greenville Times has increased substantially in the last two years.
Here, the improvement in ad sales can be attributed to the increase in circulation, WEAKENING the conclusion that the reorganization is responsible for the improvement in ad sales.
Eliminate B.

C: There been a substantial turnover in personnel in the advertising sales force over the last two years.
Here, the improvement in ad sales can be attributed to the turnover in personnel, WEAKENING the conclusion that the reorganization is responsible for the improvement in ad sales.
Eliminate C.

D: Before the reorganization, sales representatives found it difficult to keep up with relevant
developments.

This answer choice indicates that the reorganization has made it easier for sales reps to keep up with relevant developments, STRENGTHENING the conclusion that the reorganization is responsible for the improvement in ad sales.
Eliminate D.

E: The economy in Greenville and the surrounding regions has been growing rapidly over the last two years.
Here, the improvement in ad sales can be attributed to the growth in the economy, WEAKENING the conclusion that the reorganization is responsible for the improvement in ad sales.
Eliminate E.

.

A: Two years ago, a high proportion of the Greenville Times' total revenue was generated by advertising sales.
This answer choice tells us nothing about whether the reorganization is responsible for the improvement in ad sales.

Following several years of declining advertising sales, the Greenville [#permalink]
The argument states a problem and the Greenville Times's steps to improve advertising sales. The question clarifies the scope of the argument - we need to evaluate whether "the reorganization" was the cause of "improvement in advertising sales". X causes Y provided, there is no other cause for Y, Y didn't happen before Y, Y didn't cause Y, or in some cases not X not Not Y. 4 will help strengthen/weaken the cause and effect relation except one.

Option elimination -

(A) Two years ago, what proportion of the Greenville Time's total revenue was generated by advertising sales - it doesn't matter to either strengthen or weaken the above cause-effect. Say, it was 25%, then what? we compare with what?

(B) Has the circulation of the Greenville Times increased substantially in the last two years - Yes, it matters. Yes, the circulation increased - strengthens, No, the circulation did not increase - weaken.

(C) Has there been a substantial turnover in personnel in the advertising sales force over the last 2 years - Yes, it matters. Yes, there has been a substantial turnover - weakens (as there is an alternate reason), No, there has been no substantial turnover - strengthens.

(D) Before the reorganization, had sales representatives found it difficult to keep up with relevant developments in all types of businesses to which they are assigned? Yes, it matters. Yes, it was difficult - strengthens, No, it wasn't difficult - weakens.

(E) Has the economy in Greenville and the surrounding regions been growing rapidly over the last two years? - Yes, it matters. Yes, the economy has been growing provides an alternate reason - weakens, No, the economy has not been growing - strengthens.
