IMO D

(1) When y is multiplied by 6, the result is between 40 and 45.

When y = 7 .
6*7 = 42.

(2) When y is multiplied by 3, the result is between 19 and 23.

WHEN y = 7

= 3 * 7 = 21.

Ans E

We need to get a definite value for Y

St1: 40 < 6Y < 45 ... Y can be 7 or 7.1 or 6.9

St 2 : 19 < 3Y < 23 ....Y can be 7 , 6.9 or 7.1

Combined...Y can be 7, 7.1 or 6.9 ...

No definite Value for Y

Hence Insufficient.

I think the answer is D

(1) When y is multiplied by 6, the result is between 40 and 45. This means that the number is multiple of 6, so the number must be 42, that means y equals to 7....So, statement 1 is sufficient
(2) When y is multiplied by 3, the result is between 19 and 23. This means that the number is multiple of 3, so, the number must be 21, that means y equals to 7...So, statement 2 is also sufficient

Que: y?

(1) When y is multiplied by 6, the result is between 40 and 45.
40 <= 6y <= 46
possible values of 6y = {42}
=> y = 42/6 = 7
SUFFICIENT

(2) When y is multiplied by 3, the result is between 19 and 23.
19 <= 3y <= 23
possible values of 3y = {21}
=> y = 21/3 = 7
SUFFICIENT

Y is not an integer.
So I guess that y can get a lot of value for 1 and for 2. Like 7 and 7,01 for instance

What is the value of y?

Stat1: When y is multiplied by 6, the result is between 40 and 45.
y can be 41/6, 7, 43/6, 44/6. Not sufficient

Stat2:When y is multiplied by 3, the result is between 19 and 23
y can be 20/3, 7, 22/3. Not sufficient

Combining stat 1 and 2, y= 7 or 22/3. So, Not sufficient

So, I think E. :)

Re: GMAT Club Around The World!!! What is the value of y? (1) When y is mu [#permalink]
We need a specific value of y.
Statement (1) When y is multiplied by 6, the result is between 40 and 45.
This implies \( \frac{40}{6}< y <\frac{45}{6}\) i.e. \(6.67<y<7.5\)
Infinite values of y exist in this range. So Statement 1 is not sufficient.
(2) When y is multiplied by 3, the result is between 19 and 23.
This implies\( \frac{19}{3}< y <\frac{23}{3}\) i.e. \(6.33<y<7.67\)
Infinite values of y exist in this range. So Statement 1 is not sufficient.

Combining 1 and 2 we get \(6.67<y<7.5\).
We do not get a unique value for y so the answer is E.

a) 40 < 6y < 45

Y could an integer: 7
Y could be a non-integer: 7.2
Not sufficient

b) 19 < 3y < 23

Y could an integer: 7
Y could be a non-integer: 7.2
Not sufficient

Answer E, as we can get the same two values in both statements.

What is the value of y?

(1) When y is multiplied by 6, the result is between 40 and 45.

- y could be 7, but y could also be 7.1.
Insufficient.

(2) When y is multiplied by 3, the result is between 19 and 23.
- y could be 7, but y could also be 7.1.
Insufficient.

Combine: We still have multiple possibilities.

Correct Answer E

What is the value of y?
No Constrain

(1) When y is multiplied by 6, the result is between 40 and 45.
40<6y<45
6.6<y<7.5
Infinite value of y possible
- Not Sufficient

(2) When y is multiplied by 3, the result is between 19 and 23.
19<3y<23
6.3<y<7.6
Infinite value of y possible
- Not Sufficient

Re: GMAT Club Around The World!!! What is the value of y? (1) When y is mu [#permalink]
We have to find the value of y using the information given in statement
y could be any number including fractions, integers, decimals

Statement 1
6y is between 40 and 45
40 < 6y < 45 ——— Divide by 6
40/6 < y < 45/6
6.66 < y < 7.5
There could be many values of y in the given range so not Sufficient

Statement 2
3y is between 19 and 23
19 < 3y < 23 ———Divide by 3
19/3 < y < 23/3
6.33 < y < 7.66
There could be many values of y in the given range so not sufficient

Now combining the information in statement 1 and 2 we will get 6.33 < y < 7.66
Again y can have many values in the given range so not sufficient

Hence the answer will be E

Dec 31 Event: GMAT Club Around The World!
(38 new questions posted every hour time zone on Dec 31!)

From the first statement, 6y lies between 40 and 45. Since y is not an integer, so the value of y can not be confirmed. Insufficient.

From the second statement, 3y lies between 19 and 23. Since y is not an integer, so the value of y can not be confirmed. Insufficient

Also, from the first statement, 3y lies 20 and 22.5. Thus, the second statement is redundant. both statements can not be used to find the value of y.

IMO, option E is the answer.

Re: GMAT Club Around The World!!! What is the value of y? (1) When y is mu [#permalink]
What is the value of y?

(1) When y is multiplied by 6, the result is between 40 and 45.

40 < 6y < 45

Clearly insufficient b/c y can take on a number of values:
e.g. 7, 7.00001, 7.00000005, 7.30, 7.40

(2) When y is multiplied by 3, the result is between 19 and 23.

19 < 3y < 23

Clearly insufficient b/c y can take on a number of values:
y = 7, 7.00001, 7.00000005

Combo pack:
19 < 3y < 23 --> 38 < 6y < 46
We are back at square one. Y can still take on a bunch of values.
Insufficient.
