Q1. Ecological studies have shown that the current landfill that serves Sturgeon County is responsible for the vast majority of the county’s groundwater pollution problem. Surprisingly, however, Sturgeon County’s leading environmentalists support a ballot initiative that will invest in the expansion of the current landfill, as opposed to another initiative that will invest the same amount of money in creating a new landfill that would have zero impact on the county’s groundwater. Which of the following, if true, serves as the best justification for the environmentalists’ position? (A) Several recent ecological studies suggest that the rate of pollution from the current landfill is lower than had initially been reported. (B) Without continued operation and maintenance, the current landfill’s groundwater pollution rate would more than double. (C) Groundwater pollution is less of a concern in Sturgeon County than is air pollution from the county’s coal-fired power plants. (D) Polling data indicates that the new landfill proposal is unlikely to pass without support from prominent environmental activists. (E) The site of the proposed new landfill is privately-owned land that the county would have to purchase during a period of high real estate values.

Q2. The popular belief that a snake’s age can be determined by counting the number of layers of scales on its body is generally true. However, to help regulate its internal temperature, the outermost layers of scales of the Black Mamba snake often peel away when the temperature exceeding 120 degrees Fahrenheit, leaving the snake with fewer layers of scales than it would otherwise have. So only if the temperature in the Black Mamba’s environment never exceeds 120 degrees Fahrenheit will its layers be a reliable measure of the snake’s age. Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument above depends? A) The growth of new layers of scales in a snake is not a function of levels of its basal metabolic rate. B) Only the Black Mamba loses layers of scales because of excessive heat. C) One day of temperatures above 120 degrees Fahrenheit will cause the Black Mamba snake to lose a layer of scales. D) The layers of scales of all snakes are of uniform thickness. E) The number of layers of scales that will be lost when the temperature exceeds 120 degrees Fahrenheit is not predictable.

Q1. Unless tiger hunting decreases, tigers will soon be extinct in the wild. The countries in which the tigers habitats are located are currently debating joint legislation that would ban tiger hunting. Thus, if these countries can successfully enforce this legislation, the survival of tigers in the wild will be ensured.

The reasoning in the argument is most vulnerable to criticism on the grounds that the argument

(A) assumes without sufficient warrant that a ban on tiger hunting could be successfully enforced

(B) considers the effects of hunting on tigers without also considering the effects of hunting on other endangered animal species

(C) fails to take into account how often tiger hunters are unsuccessful in their attempts to kill tigers

(D) neglects to consider the results of governmental attempts in the past to limit tiger hunting

(E) takes the removal of an impediment to the tigers’ survival as a guarantee of their survival

Q2. On the island of Lakahoa, numerous giant stone statues have been found. It is believed that these statues were used for marking sacred areas by people who inhabited Lakahoa in ancient times. However, a few of the statues remain in the area around the quarry where all of the statues were produced. Clearly, therefore, ancient inhabitants of Lakahoa did not believe those few statues to be of sufficiently high quality for marking sacred areas.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument relies?

(A) The ancient inhabitants of Lakahoa did not have the ability to transport the few remaining statues to sacred areas.

(B) There were no differences between the levels of quality of the statues used in sacred areas.

(C) There were sacred areas of ancient Lakahoa where the inhabitants did not place any giant stone statues.

(D) The area around the quarry was not considered sacred by the ancient inhabitants of Lakahoa.

(E) All of the ancient inhabitants of Lakahoa had the skills required for assessing the quality of a stone statue.

Q1. (C) Children whose biological parents have TSZ are as likely to develop TSZ if they are raised by adoptive parents who do not have TSZ as if they are raised by their biological parents.

(D) Children whose biological parents have TSZ and who develop TSZ usually avoid developing a severe form of the syndrome if they seek treatment for TSZ shortly after developing the first signs of it.

You should always check with the school you are applying, but given that it is Christmas that might not be possible. From what I know, there is no difference between Online GMAT and In-Person.

CR Questions December - 25 :

Q1. The campus parking authority’s claim that the university is losing substantial revenue
each semester by allowing commuting students to park on campus for free is clearly
false. Nearly all students who commute to campus live close enough to the university
to easily walk there. Hence, the revenue generated by a pay-to-park system would
actually be quite small, since ______________.

(A) only full-time students would be required to purchase parking permits.
(B) most people who currently commute would rather walk to school than pay to park
on campus.
(C) enforcement of parking restrictions would require the hiring of many additional
parking authority employees.
(D) the university receives the majority of its revenue from charitable donations.
(E) most of the free parking areas that are currently being used by students would be
converted to paid parking areas.

Q2. We know that if life ever existed on the Moon, there would be signs of life there. But numerous excursions to the Moon have failed to provide us with any sign of life. So there has never been life on the Moon.

The pattern of reasoning in the argument above is most similar to that in which one of the following?

(A) We know that the spy is a traitor. We do not know that the general is a traitor. So the general is not a spy.
(B) If we have any mayonnaise, it would be in the refrigerator. But the refrigerator is almost empty. So it is unlikely that we have mayonnaise.
(C) Hendricks will win the election only if voters are concerned primarily with fighting crime. Hendricks is in favor of tougher criminal penalties. So voters will probably go with Hendricks.
(D) If rodents are responsible for the lost grain from last year’s harvest, we would find signs of rodents in the warehouses. And we have found signs of rodents there. So rodents are responsible for the lost grain.
(E) If their army is planning an attack, there would either be troop movements along the border or a transfer of weapons. But intelligence reports show no indication of either. So their army is not planning an attack.

A. In the recent past, the number of regions where the demand for water has increased has been greater than the number of regions where the demand for water has decreased.

B. In some areas of Tibica, the amount of water lost during distribution as a proportion of the amount of water supplied has increased

C. The complaints made by the residents of Tibica against the corporations that supply water are always driven more by perception than by ground realities.

D. TMWC, which used to supply water uniformly across the city, has rearranged its distribution such that TMWC’s water supply in an area is proportional only to the demand in that area

Q2. Data related to the past 30 years reveals some interesting insights about the propensity of a country to go into a war. Over the past 30 years, the countries that maintained the highest military strengths were also more aggressively involved in a higher number of wars. Moreover, the likelihood of getting aggressively involved in a war increased for countries whose military strength increased significantly during this period. Since there was no major world-wide war phenomenon in the recent past, it is likely that an increased military strength causes the increase in aggressive behavior and the higher involvement in wars.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?

A. The data doesn’t distinguish between the countries that were consistently involved in war and the countries that were involved in more wars during the beginning and end of the 30-year period.

B. Some countries cited in the data were rarely involved in any war

C. Data shows that none of the countries that had zero increase in military strength showed any increase in their involvement in wars.

D. Situations that trigger an increase in military strength such as political tensions with neighboring countries are also likely to increase a country’s propensity to become involved in wars.

E. Data related to some of these countries is available only for a partial duration out of the 30-year period
