Q1. In contemplating major purchases, businesses often consider only whether there is enough money left from monthly revenues after paying monthly expenses to cover the cost of the purchase. But many expenses do not occur monthly; taking into account only monthly expenses can cause a business to overexpand. So the use of a cash-flow statement is critical for all businesses. Which one of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument? (A) Only a cash-flow statement can accurately document all monthly expenses. (B) Any business that has overexpanded can benefit from the use of a cash-flow statement. (C) When a business documents only monthly expenses it also documents only monthly revenue. (D) A cash-flow statement is the only way to track both monthly expenses and expenses that are not monthly. (E) When a business takes into account all expenses, not just monthly ones, it can make better decisions.

Q2. Perry: Worker-owned businesses require workers to spend time on management decision-making and investment strategy, tasks that are not directly productive. Also, such businesses have less extensive divisions of labor than do investor-owned businesses. Such inefficiencies can lead to low profitability, and thus increase the risk for lenders. Therefore, lenders seeking to reduce their risk should not make loans to worker-owned businesses. Which one of the following, if true, most seriously weakens Perry’s argument? (A) Businesses with the most extensive divisions of labor sometimes fail to make the fullest use of their most versatile employees’ potential. (B) Lenders who specialize in high-risk loans are the largest source of loans for worker-owned businesses. (C) Investor-owned businesses are more likely than worker-owned businesses are to receive start-up loans. (D) Worker-owned businesses have traditionally obtained loans from cooperative lending institutions established by coalitions of worker- owned businesses. (E) In most worker-owned businesses, workers compensate for inefficiencies by working longer hours than do workers in investor-owned businesses.

CR Questions January- 11 :

Q1. Cholesterol, which is a known factor in coronary heart disease and stroke, needs a carrier, known as a lipoprotein, to transport it through the bloodstream. Low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) increase the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke, but we can tentatively conclude that high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) help prevent coronary heart disease and stroke. First, aerobic exercise increases one’s level of HDLs. Second, HDL levels are higher in women than in men. And both aerobic exercise and being female are positively correlated with lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke.

Each of the following, if true, strengthens the argument EXCEPT:

(A) HDLs, unlike LDLs, help the body excrete cholesterol.

(B) Persons who are overweight tend to have a higher risk of early death due to coronary heart disease and stroke, and tend to have low levels of HDLs.

(C) HDLs are less easily removed from the bloodstream than are LDLs.

(D) A high level of HDLs mitigates the increased health risks associated with LDLs.

(E) Men whose level of HDLs is equal to the average level for women have been found to have a lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke than that of most men.

Q2. Sarah: some schools seek to foster a habit of volunteering in their students by requiring them to perform community service. But since a person who has been forced to do something has not really volunteered and since the habit of volunteering cannot be said to have been fostered in a person who has not yet volunteered for anything, there is no way this policy can succeed by itself.

Paul: I disagree. Some students forced to perform community service have enjoyed it so much that they subsequently actually volunteer to do something similar. In such cases, the policy can clearly be said to have fostered a habit of volunteering.

Paul responds to Sarah’s argument using which one of the following argumentative techniques?

(A) He argues that Sarah is assuming just what she sets out to prove.

(B) He argues that Sarah’s conception of what it means to volunteer excludes certain activities that ought to be considered instances of volunteering.

(C) He introduces considerations that call into question one of Sarah’s assumptions.

(D) He questions Sarah’s motives for advancing an argument against the school policy.

(E) He argues that a policy Sarah fails to consider could accomplish the same aim as the policy that Sarah considers.

I dont think there is much to choose among C, D, and E. Everything after ‘that’ is a modifier. So crossing that off, meaning and grammar wise, each of these makes sense, imo. What is the source of this question?

I am only leaning towards C for meaning reasons - it is more logical (at least to me) that she developed her skills during her time as a lawyer, not "as a lawyer" itself

but I agree, there seems to be nott hat many reasons to eliminate

Lol. Haha. Yea.

Wordiness vs redundancy. I think here its not redundant just wordy. Some writers might prefer a few extra words for emphasis, and it might be okay as long as its not redundant.

For eg “researchers who study evolution..” vs “researchers studying evolution..”

4 words vs 3. But both are considered right

Q1. Recent epidemiological studies report that Country X has the lowest incidence of disease P of any country. Nevertheless, residents of Country X who are reported to have contracted disease P are much more likely to die from it than are residents of any other country.

Which one of the following, if true, most helps to resolve the apparent discrepancy described above?

(A) There are several forms of disease P, some of which are more contagious than others.

(B) Most of the fatal cases of disease P found in Country X involve people who do not reside in Country X.

(C) In Country X, diagnosis of disease P seldom occurs except in the most severe cases of the disease.

(D) The number of cases of disease P that occur in any country fluctuates widely from year to year.

(E) Because of its climate, more potentially fatal illnesses occur in Country X than in many other countries.

Q2. Since starting her business, a travel agent has been promoting trips only to Countries A, B, and C. She believes that the economies of A and B are changing in a way that will soon make them less desirable to travelers, most of whom have no interest in visiting Country C. option C.
Diagnosis of only severe disease occurs in county X. hence, lowest incidence of disease p is reported. And since the severity is high, this explains why people with disease P die in country X

Q1. Brand Zzzoom released a running shoe with a shock-absorbing sole developed using a new foam polymer that reduces muscle fatigue in the legs of runners. The density of the foam, however, results in the overall shoe weight being slightly heavier than most high quality running shoes. Professional runners who welcome the use of Zzzoom’s new shoe will definitely experience an improved performance in their runs.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously strengthens the argument?

(A) The overall shoe weight is affected not only by the density of the sole but also by the materials used in the other components of the shoe.

(B) Since the muscles lifting the leg also lift the shoe, a lighter shoe is likely to produce better results than a heavier one.

(C) Research shows that 72% of a runner’s muscular energy is expired on impact with the running surface.

(D) Too light a running shoe can result in the emergence of knee problems during old age.

(E) Aerodynamics can be critical in the optimization of a professional running shoe’s performance.

Q2. Caffeine is a chemical compound that stimulates the human central nervous system. Research into the effects of caffeine has been performed by a myriad of companies from different places around the world, and new evidence is published every few months. High caffeine intakes cause nervousness and insomnia in some subjects while drowsiness and repose are experienced by others. Furthermore, some people report a laxative effect while in others it can result in constipation.

Which of the following conclusions is most strongly supported by the information above?

(A) Since there is not enough consistency with regards to results, research of such a chemical is not advantageous and should be discontinued.

(B) The individuality of human subjects creates difficulty when attempting to form a definitive judgement about the symptoms of caffeine.

(C) Caffeine does not affect the central nervous system in all people and, therefore, physiological symptoms can also vary.

(D) Caffeine can act as an addictive substance causing unpleasant side effects and harm to the human body’s basic functions.

(E) To conduct more accurate research, examinations should be carried out on larger test groups.
