Q1. In recent years, networks of fiber-optic cable have been replacing electrical wire for transmitting telecommunications signals. Signals running through fiber-optic cables deteriorate, and so the signals must be run through a piece of equipment called a regenerator before being transmitted farther. Light-Line is the leading manufacturer of signal regenerators. Therefore, Light-Line is one of the companies that will most benefit if new long-distance fiber-optic telecommunications networks are constructed. Which of the following, if true, casts the most doubt on the prediction about Light-Line’s prospects? A. Telecommunications signals sent along electrical wires can travel much farther than signals transmitted through fiber-optic before needing to be regenerated. B. Expanding its production of regenerators will require Light-Line to spend proportionately more on labor and materials. C. The volume of signals that a fiber-optic cable can carry is several thousand times greater than the volume that can be carried by an electrical wire of similar size. D. There are technologies that enable telecommunications signals to be transmitted without either wire or fiber-optic cable. E. Several manufacturers are developing regenerator technologies that will allow signals to be transmitted many times farther than at present before requiring regeneration.

Q2. The Ergonomic Society conducted a study that indicated that many people develop severe back problems during adulthood, and that virtually all such people who received chiropractic treatment showed great improvement. Therefore, in order to minimize the proportion of the population that suffers from back pain, the Ergonomic Society recommended that chiropractic treatment be directed toward those adults who suffer from severe back problems. Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends? (A) Any person who receives chiropractic treatment for back pain may also benefit from other forms of treatment. (B) Large insurance carriers cover chiropractic care for back problems to a lesser degree than they do other medical treatments. (C) Individuals who receive chiropractic or other treatment prior to developing severe back problems are not less likely to develop back pain than those who do not. (D) Chiropractic treatment is more effective in treating severe back problems when utilized over a long period of time, as opposed to sporadically. (E) Severe back pain and other problems often cause individuals to miss workdays.

Q1. In Morigia the average age of cars that are still in use has historically been seven years, but now it is nearly nine years. Car manufacturers claim that the current poor economy has forced people to put off buying new cars, and thus when the economy improves, the average age of cars will return to former levels.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously calls into question the car manufacturers’ prediction?

(A) Fewer cars per year are now being manufactured in Morigia than were being manufactured there five years ago.

(B) When the threat of job loss is particularly strong, people are reluctant to commit themselves to expensive purchases.

(C) The older a car is, the greater the amount of upkeep it requires.

(E) Most people in Morigia now believe that replacing an old car with a new one has very undesirable ecological consequences.

Q2. In a study of the effect of color on productivity, 50 of 100 factory workers were moved from their drab workroom to brightly colored workroom. Both these workers and the 50 who remained in the drab workroom increased their productivity, probably as a result of the interest taken by the researchers in the work of both groups during the study.

Which of the following, if true, would cast most doubt upon the author’s interpretation of the study results given above?

(A) The 50 workers moved to the brightly colored room performed precisely the same manufacturing task as the workers who remained in the drab workroom.

(B) The drab workroom was designed to provide adequate space for at most 65 workers.

(C) the 50 workers who moved to the brightly colored workroom were matched as closely as possible in age and level of training to the 50 workeres who remained in the drab workroom.

(D) Nearly all the workers in both groups had volunteered to move to the brightly colored workroom.

(E) Many of the workers who moved to the brightly colored workroom reported that they liked the drab workroom as well as or better than they liked the brightly colored workroom.

B because the author is showing cause and effect reasoning i.e. the productivity increased because of interest taken by researcher. However option B gives us another reason i.e. availability of proper workspace now is the reason.

Here , we are looking only at the prediction after betterment of economy conditions. Therefore, improvement of economy will not result in reducing average age of cars as there will not be enough cars available for sale

CR Questions December - 19 :

Q1. The popular notion that a tree’s age can be determined by counting the number of internal rings in its trunk is generally true. However, to help regulate the internal temperature of the tree, the outermost layers of wood of the Brazilian ash often peel away when the temperature exceeds 95 degrees Fahrenheit, leaving the tree with fewer rings than it would otherwise have. So only if the temperature in the Brazilian ash’s environment never exceeded 95 degrees Fahrenheit, its rings would be a reliable measure of the tree’s age.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument above depends?

(A) The growth of new rings in a tree is not a function of levels of precipitation.

(B) Only the Brazilian ash loses rings because of excessive heat.

(C) Only one day of temperatures above 95 degrees Fahrenheit is needed to cause the Brazilian ash to lose a ring.

(D) The internal rings of all trees are of uniform thickness.

(E) The number of rings that will be lost when the temperature exceeds 95 degrees Fahrenheit is not predictable

Q2. People who discontinue regular exercise typically claim that exercising amounted to wasted time for them. But this claim is born of laziness, in light of the overwhelming evidence that regular exercise improves one’s health.

Which of the following statements, if true, would most seriously weaken the argument above?

(A) Exercise has been shown to not only improve one’s health, but also to increase longevity, or life span.

(B) People who have discontinued regular exercise now make productive use of the time they formerly devoted to exercise.

(C) People who are in good health are more likely to exercise regularly than people who are in poor health.

(D) A person need not exercise every day to experience improved health from the exercise.

(E) People who are in poor health are less likely to exercise than other people.

But we have to destroy the conclusion that even if the temperature falls below 95 , the counting of rings is not a reliable method. As per E, the rings are not a reliable method when temperature exceeds 95. But we can still predict the age by counting the rings when temperature remains below 95.

Answer should be A. If the levels of precipitation is a function of growth of new rings, then we cannot predict the age by counting of rings even if the temperature does not exceed 95.

Because in the argument, it is written that if the temperature did not exceed 95, the counting of rings is a reliable method. This argument will fall apart when the counting of rings is not a reliable method even if the temperature did not exceed 95.

you missed "if". argument doesnt confirm you temperature will never exceeded 95 degrees. if temperature exceed and we can count rings than it weakens conclusion
