Re: Monday’s test was said to be very difficult, so not only Matt but too [#permalink]
This is a case of idiom error. Idiom has to be not only X but also Y. Moreover since the first part of sentence is in past tense, the second part has to be also in past tense.
B and E uses present tense. C has awkward construction and does not uses idiom. Similarly A does not use the idiom correctly. D is correct

a) so not only Matt but too his friends had to study
b) so not only Matt but also his friends have to study
c) so too Matt and also his friends they needed studying
d) so not only Matt but also his friends had to study
e) therefore Matt and also his friends they have to study

Re: Monday’s test was said to be very difficult, so not only Matt but too [#permalink]
Monday’s test was said to be very difficult, so not only Matt but too his friends had to study all weekend instead of hanging out.

POE:
Eliminate (B),(C),(E) - Tense error, it should be in past.
Eliminate (A) - 'Not only.... but also'

a) so not only Matt but too his friends had to study
b) so not only Matt but also his friends have to study
c) so too Matt and also his friends they needed studying
d) so not only Matt but also his friends had to study - CORRECT
e) therefore Matt and also his friends they have to study

What is wrong with have to study? It seems as though monday test is coming up after the weekend and therefore Matt and his friends have to study instead of hanging out...

What is wrong with my logic ?

Because the sentence uses the past tense "was" which means the test already happened so you need to use another past tense to show that the study also already happened. Have is present tense.
