b) so not only Matt but also his friends have to study - Idiom Error corrected, however tense needs to be past as the sentence is written in the past.
c) so too Matt and also his friends they needed studying - Idiom Error (Not only x but also y)
d) so not only Matt but also his friends had to study - Correct. Sentence is written in past and idiom is also corrected.
e) therefore Matt and also his friends they have to study - Awkward and wordy.

This is a case of idiom error. Idiom has to be not only X but also Y. Moreover since the first part of sentence is in past tense, the second part has to be also in past tense.
B and E uses present tense. C has awkward construction and does not uses idiom. Similarly A does not use the idiom correctly. D is correct
