This is another way to solve the problem
200 - (-203) = 403 + 1 = 404

n/2(a+l)
404/2(200 - 203)
-606

Therefore, answer is A

Of the numbers from -203 to 200, the sum of numbers from -200 to 200 would be zero owing to the -ve additions.

So the sum is -203+-202+-201 = -606

This is a straight problem
Numbers from 1 to 200 will cancel out number from -1 to -200
So we just have to add -201-202-203=-606
Hence A is the answer

Integers are from \(-203\) to \(200\) inclusive.

Sum of integers from \(-200\) to \(200\) will get cancelled except \(0\).

Only integers left are \(-203, -202, -201, 0\).

Sum of the above left integers

\(= (-203) + (-202) +(-201) + 0 = -203 - 202-201 = - 606\)

What is the (a+l) ? Why do you divide by 2?


sharbeario, what matthewsmith_89 did was use the formula to determine the sum of an evenly spaced sequence,
\(Sum = \frac{N}{2}*(a+l)\) where
N = #terms or #items (dividing the #terms by 2 gives us the #pairs in the sequence)
a & l = first and last terms in the sequence

To determine #items: \(\frac{200-(-203)}{1} + 1\) = 404
Therefore Sum = \(\frac{404}{2}*[200+(-203)]\) = -606

-203 - 202 - 201 -200 + ................... + 200

Sum of the red part will be 0 and answer will be -203 - 202 - 201 = -606, Answer (A)
