Re: A school board candidate has indicated that cheating through the use [#permalink]
Hello ,

I thought the answer was C .

Because better teacher student ratio and less class size strengthen the argument assuming teacher will have better control .

Could someone help to understand why C is wrong and D is correct .

A school board candidate has indicated that cheating through the use of cellphones in the classroom is on the rise this year and has proposed a ban on cellphones in schools altogether. School officials cite only a marginal increase in the number of students who cheat this year in comparison to the last two years, so this is just a ploy to make voters think a quality education is his top priority.

Which of the following, if true, best strengthens the conclusion of the preceding argument?

(A) The school board candidate has continuously voted down proposals to increase the budget for area schools.

Possible strengthener, but not a clear one. He may be interested in education even if he has voted against budget increases.

(B) The school board candidate has continuously voted in favor of budget increases for area schools.

This conflicts with the first. Possible weakener.

In official CR questions choices do not conflict with each other.

(C) This year, schools in the district have smaller class sizes and better student/teacher ratios than they have had in past years.

Completely unconnected to whether it is a political ploy.

(D) The ratio of teachers to number of students has decreased significantly over the past several years because of a growth in number of students district-wide without a concomitant rise in the number of teachers to accommodate the increase.

Completely unconnected to whether it is a political ploy and conflicts with the previous choice.

In official CR questions choices do not conflict with each other.

(E) The school board candidate has a daughter who attends a school in the district, and he does not want her to own a cellphone.

Weakener. Not a political ploy. A way to keep his daughter from using a cell phone.

(A) is the only one that has any chance of being a strengthener, and (A) is not a clear strengthener.

A key aspect of correctly answering CR questions is refraining from making up convoluted stories that are not clearly supported by a combination of common sense and what is said in the passages and answer choices. There is no way to strengthen this argument by using any of these answer choices without creating a convoluted story.

So, this question is not representative of what test-takers will see when they take the GMAT.
