I wish these events were held over the weekend, but I'll most likely get to the April session.

RE: Housing - Not sure what most people do, but I certainly don't have the cash to afford a one bedroom in NYC. I'll definitely be looking to find a roommate(s).

Anyone planning to attend Columbia Connect in February and/or April?

I'm going to try to make it to the April admit event! Has anyone started to think about housing? Do most people live on their own or share?

I live in Manhattan but plan to move to West Village for following reasons:
1. #1 train takes you directly to Columbia
2. West Village is awesome place to live. you can walk to Soho, Chinatown, Little Italy. Has tons of great restaurants that are reasonably priced for Manhattan, great bars and nightlife. Its a magical place with cobblestone streets, beautiful brownstones.
3. Neighborhood feel, warm and fuzzy for Manhattan.
4. Yes its expensive to live in West Village, but well worth it. Living near Columbia can be boring

Just booked my flight and hotel for Columbia Connect in February!

I plan on living in West Village or the Upper West Side. I'd like to spend under $1500/mo on rent--hopefully that's not unreasonable?

So you're willing to trade the long train ride uptown every morning and every night? I was thinking that the upper west side would be a better spot for the 10-15 min commute and slightly cheaper rent. Plus I could run back to my apt in the middle of the day if I needed to throw on a suit for a meet and greet at night.

If you're looking for roommates, how are you going about doing that? Craigslist?

Personally, I'd rather be a bit closer. UWS sounds good. My rent target is around 1200ish.

I think it would be great if we could come up with our own exchange to share profiles/preferences for those seeking compatible roommates. What do you all think?

I like where your head is at Vince. Something like a spreadsheet with some basic qualities you can check off? (early riser v. night owl, Garth Brooks v. Snoop Dogg, excessive revelry v. excessive piety, etc.)?

That's not a bad idea. Meeting a roommate was one of the reasons I was planning on going to both Columbia Connects.

I haven't spent too much time on the admitted student portal yet, but I thought I saw some housing/roommate finder resources there.

What are the prices at Upper East Side like ? Is it possible to find one-bedroom apartment + kitchen for sth like 3500-4000 (at most ! ) ?

Hey Ivan. I haven't done a ton of diligence yet, but I'd be willing to bet a few dollars that you could find what you're looking for and pay less than $3,500 to $4,000 USD. One thing you may want to consider is that you can easily move up and downtown on the subway in NYC. However, it can be a pain in the ass to go across town. Since Columbia is on the upper west side, you might consider looking at apartments over there. The #1 train runs up and down the west side of Manhattan and will drop you off right at the doorstep of Columbia. Getting over to Columbia from the upper east side is a little bit more of a challenge.

Do you mean per month or per semester? For $4000 per month, you can live pretty much anywhere in Manhattan. The Upper East Side is not convenient for commuting to Columbia.

Does anyone know if everyone's "To-Do List" has the same items? Mine lists "apply for visa" as one of the incomplete tasks. I'm an American citizen, so I shouldn't need a visa... I'm just worried something got confused along the way administratively because I'm currently working abroad.

I think that's on everyone's. Mine has that too, and I'm a citizen also.
