Moss
Speaking with people at Columbia Connect, most agreed a good place to live that is a balance between good location & not blowing your budget is in the West 70s and 80s. Anyone know of a good place to search for places to live in that area? Looking for a studio for around $1.5k if possible.
Moss, thats exactly where I live and its awesome! I highly highly recommend this area. I think you can definitely find a studio in that range though it'll probably be in a walk-up (no elevator). Apartments in this area are affordable and bigger than those in the West Village for example. You really do get more value for your money here. And most buildings here are those old 1920s "pre-war" buildings that are five stories high with no elevators. So some general things to know about this area:
1) Apartments are cheaper the further away you are from Central Park West and as long as you aren't right off of Broadway.
2) Buildings on the numbered streets are always cheaper than those on the main cross streets (i.e. West End/Columbus/Amsterdam/etc).
3) Also, something most non-New Yorkers will not know. But when you are looking for apartments in this area, if the building is numbered <100, i.e. 45 W. 73rd street, it means that the building is located between CPW and Columbus. Similar, if the building is numbered <200, it is located between Columbus and Amsterdam....and so on and so forth.
4) I don't know if others will agree with me but I find that apartments near amsterdam are always slightly cheaper for some reason. Near West End and Riverside are also slightly cheaper (probably because you have to walk a few extra feet to the subway).
4) No matter where you are on the West Side (West End or Columbus or etc), the 1 subway, which takes you right in front of campus (116th stop), is pretty much in the middle (same walking distance), on Broadway.
I've only used Craigslist and its worked out for me! If apartment hunting is a full time job for you, you will find an apartment (i really feel like thats the only way to do it...make sure you have all of your info on hand so that you can submit an application as soon as you find something you like...competition here is insane). Don't know of any other sites. Try to avoid getting a broker. They charge about 12% of your total year's rent.
