Just a heads up, the housing application went live on Feb 15 for those that want to apply for on-campus housing. Not sure if everyone received the email.

Yeah, on that subject, do you guys think someone from the Midwest has a shot at getting on campus housing? (Because priority is given based on distance from campus, I've heard access to housing is not a sure thing unless you are international).

Frank,

I don't know, I kinda doubt it...but I would definitely at least try. I am coming from California, and was told it would be '50/50'. The application took me all of 5 minutes to fill out.

Hey Jack, I'm coming from the west coast too, they told you 50/50? I think that probably applies to apartment shares, I was told as far as the studios go, you have to be international for sure.

Ah back to having a roommate....hooray.....

A lot of my friends went to CBS or are current second years there. When I asked them about housing (I know its not applicable to me because I live in Manhattan but I was curious), they told me that if you're not international, you have an extremely slim chance of getting it. And considering that CBS has a fairly significant international student population (~>35%), I would advise you to apply (what do you have to lose) but also stay alert for non-Columbia housing.

The main advantage of Columbia housing is that most of their apartments are rent-controlled. So a two bedroom apartment is $2000/month. One of my friends had a really good deal, he was in a 2 bedroom university apartment and was paying $1600 total/month. But honestly, you can find apartments in that range around campus, maybe not a street away, but close enough...especially if you look slightly further north, closer to west harlem. And if you're up for moving in the late 110s to early 120s near morningside park (its fairly safe there), you can find studios for $1000 and really nice one bedrooms for $1500. So don't fret if you end up having to look for a place yourself. And don't worry about roommates...if you haven't found one before university starts, you can always sublet a studio or a room for a month or two, find someone by then (A LOT of ppl do this), and then hunt down a two bedroom apt. There are always options.

If you have more questions about housing in nyc, feel free to PM me! I live fairly close to Columbia :)

Speaking with people at Columbia Connect, most agreed a good place to live that is a balance between good location & not blowing your budget is in the West 70s and 80s. Anyone know of a good place to search for places to live in that area? Looking for a studio for around $1.5k if possible.

Moss, thats exactly where I live and its awesome! I highly highly recommend this area. I think you can definitely find a studio in that range though it'll probably be in a walk-up (no elevator). Apartments in this area are affordable and bigger than those in the West Village for example. You really do get more value for your money here. And most buildings here are those old 1920s "pre-war" buildings that are five stories high with no elevators. So some general things to know about this area:

1) Apartments are cheaper the further away you are from Central Park West and as long as you aren't right off of Broadway.
2) Buildings on the numbered streets are always cheaper than those on the main cross streets (i.e. West End/Columbus/Amsterdam/etc).
3) Also, something most non-New Yorkers will not know. But when you are looking for apartments in this area, if the building is numbered <100, i.e. 45 W. 73rd street, it means that the building is located between CPW and Columbus. Similar, if the building is numbered <200, it is located between Columbus and Amsterdam....and so on and so forth.
4) I don't know if others will agree with me but I find that apartments near amsterdam are always slightly cheaper for some reason. Near West End and Riverside are also slightly cheaper (probably because you have to walk a few extra feet to the subway).
4) No matter where you are on the West Side (West End or Columbus or etc), the 1 subway, which takes you right in front of campus (116th stop), is pretty much in the middle (same walking distance), on Broadway.

I've only used Craigslist and its worked out for me! If apartment hunting is a full time job for you, you will find an apartment (i really feel like thats the only way to do it...make sure you have all of your info on hand so that you can submit an application as soon as you find something you like...competition here is insane). Don't know of any other sites. Try to avoid getting a broker. They charge about 12% of your total year's rent.

Thanks for the insight, guys! I'm planning on applying for the apartment share and also looking for places on my own when the time comes.

Too all of my new MBA friends: I want to let you know about a great place and one of my favorite bars to get dinner and chill out. The Amsterdam Ale House on 76th & Amsterdam Avenue. Best sweet-potato fries and amazing burgers/pulled pork. They have like a 100 beers on tap including Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale. I highly recommend eating the sweet-potato fries with mayo instead of ketchup; trust me.

I am technically one of the first members of the class of 2013 because I had to defer a year due to military retaining issues. I was ticked off about it but what can you do. Life happens. I live in the midwest where most people don't know about Columbia and think of NYC as hell on earth (I am from NYC so I beg to differ). I really look forward to meeting all of you guys because I have spent a year surrounded by people (my spouse's family particularly) who think I am making a huge mistake because the economy is going to hell in their opinion and that I should keep my safe government job. They think I am arrogant and naive to think Columbia will open doors for me.

I tell you guys this because I want to express how excited I am to finally start meeting my classmates that I had to wait a year to meet, and be around people who are as excited as I am and realize how amazing this experience is going to be, rather than have to defend my goals and decisions to people who don't understand what a top MBA means to a person's potential career impacts.

Thanks! I am working my way through a CBS vs. Booth decision right now, but sweet potato fries, pulled pork, and 100 beers on tap may have won me over. God bless America!

I just returned to my home in VA from a trip through Alabama. You should hear those folks talk about the great evil that NY represents. They made me think I was making a pact with Satan himself. I'm a big Arrogant Bastard fan myself, but can't get it where I live. Cheers to a good brew and fries when we get to NY.

phillypoint,

Dude, you know you want to go to CBS. Booth is all about learning--that sucks. Come have fun and CBS and make the same dollar a Booth grad will in 2 years!

No...seriously...come to CBS

I'm with you CBSoverBooth. I'd also like to do the greedy kind of PE. But, I'd be happy to score a gig at one of the BB banks.

I'm also all about some fun. What are you and I going to do to eliminate this whole grade disclosure thing so we can maximize our fun?

Phillypointgod21-

Funny about the opinion on NYC. I think when I tell people I am aiming to go into investment banking I might as well say I'm getting a master's in murder. Hard to find a profession held in lower regard in terms of public opinion. I guess we can thank guys like John Thain, who spent $32,000 on his toilet.

But I heard it had a heated seat. You ever sit on a heated toilet seat? No going back bro...

The public is ignorant. They don't know the difference between traders and bankers. Big difference there. I'll happily take my masters in murder though since I'll be able to cash in my bonus for as many sweet potato fries as my heart desires. I'll see you at the Amsterdam ale house - first, second, and third round on me.
