The wife of the poet Shelly wrote the world-famous and increasingly relevant Gothic horror tale, Frankenstein, in response to a challenge to create a ghost story.
A. The wife of the poet Shelly wrote the world-famous and increasingly relevant Gothic horror tale, Frankenstein, in response to a challenge to create a ghost story.
B. To create a ghost story, the wife of the poet Shelly wrote the world-famous and increasingly relevant Gothic horror tale, Frankenstein, in response to a challenge.
C. The world-famous and increasingly relevant Gothic horror tale, Frankenstein, the wife of the poet Shelly wrote in response to a challenge to create a ghost story.
D. Writing in response to a challenge to create a ghost story, the wife of the poet Shelly made the world-famous and increasingly relevant Gothic horror tale, Frankenstein.
E. In response to a challenge to create a ghost story, the wife of the poet Shelly wrote the world-famous and increasingly relevant Gothic horror tale, Frankenstein. [/quote]

The original intent of the sentence is that “In response to a challenge, the writer wrote the story”.
Option B means that the story was in response to a challenge. How can a story be in response to a challenge?
Option C means that the wife was a horror tale.
Use of AND changes the intent as it means that author did 2 different things. But in reality author did only 1 thing.

If we remove the modifiers, option A becomes
“The wife wrote horror tale in response to a challenge” – This means that the tale was in response to a challenge. But this is not the intended meaning.

If we remove the modifiers, option E becomes
“In response to a challenge, the wife wrote horror tale”– This means that the wife wrote the tale in response to a challenge, and this is the intended meaning.
Answer E
