(B) 70
(C) 80
(D) 110
(E) 140

relative speed= 20+35 ; 55
time ; 220/55; 4 hours
so B would have travelled ; 35*4 ; 140 miles

Letting n = the number of hours that each vehicle is in operation, we can create the distance equation as:

20n + 35n = 220

55n = 220

n = 4

Car B has traveled 35 x 4 = 140 miles when it passes car A.

Given:
Towns X and Y are 220 miles apart
Car A is traveling at 20 miles per hour from Town X towards Town Y
At the same time as Car B, traveling at 35 miles per hour, leaves Town Y towards Town X

Question:
How many miles will Car B have traveled when the two cars pass by each other?

Car A and Car B will pass each other after = 220 /(20+35) = 4 hours

Car B will travel = 35*4 = 140 kms when they pass each other.
