Conclusion : the government's calculation methods must be altered in order to provide statistics that measure true poverty.

Premise : The United States government uses only a household's cash income before taxes to determine whether that household falls below the poverty line in a given year; capital gains, non-cash government benefits, and tax credits are not included.

By saying that ' The government’s calculation method also erroneously counts those who do not earn income in a given year but who have substantial assets on which to live during that year ' , E is pointing out to one more flaw in the method of evaluating people who fall below poverty line. By doing so, isnt E strengthening the premise and in turn strengthening the conclusion ?
Can u please explain why E is not a strengthener ?

I agree that C is a strengthens the argument.

I am not able to understand why exactly C is better than E.

I'm struggling with the Official Advanced Level CR questions. Usually I spend time on the question stem, find the gap and work on the options. Like taught by Veritas Prep instructor Dan, the correct answer usually pops out but with the advanced questions, I'm simply stuck at not knowing how to work them.

If you can suggest me A proper Plan/strategy to ace CR (i.e >90% accuracy)from scratch,it would be great.Like how to start, which resources to use, practice questions etc...

Harryhill35 - People starting from scratch need to first go through the complete CR material of a test prep. This will explain them the various question types, expectations in each, the strategies to handle each etc. Plus the practice problems will give them the lay of the land, so to say.
Next comes practicing say 5 questions a day - there are various resources for this. At Veritas, we have a question bank which provides thousands of practice questions with detailed explanations. Open forums like GMAT Club provide a ton of practice questions too (use tags to search for the type and difficulty level).
Sometimes, one or two types of questions give trouble to test takers (e.g. assumption questions) - They take a little more time and practice till you figure out the strategy that works for you. At this time, most people take help of instructors, expert blog posts, forum experts etc.

The final accuracy one achieves depends on the quality of effort one puts in. If one studies with an objective of 'understanding the structure of the argument and the point of focus of each question', usually the result is quite satisfactory.

Hi VeritasKarishma,

Could you please help me with this question?
https://gmatclub.com/forum/a-proposed-change-to-federal-income-tax-laws-would-eliminate-deduction-64195.html#p469416

I had difficulty while negating option A.

A says -
Without incentives offered by federal income tax laws, at least some wealthy individuals would not donate as much money to charitable and educational institutions as they otherwise would have.

My negated statement was - Without incentives offered by federal income tax laws, no wealthy individuals would donate as much money to charitable and educational institutions as they otherwise would have.

My doubt is for answer choices such as A, should we negate "some/all/none etc" or should we negate the verb (would not donate)? Also in this case the option A has negative in the main verb - would not donate, and I made it positive in my negated statement. Am I correct?

I have always struggled negating answer choices such as A, where I have "All/Some/None etc.." and the main verb has a negative (would not, should not) attached to it.

Thanks!

https://gmatclub.com/forum/bank-deposit ... 30893.html

In this question, OA is option B.
the argument clearly mentions that the insurance is partly responsible for the high rate of bank failures.
Option B says that the frequent bank failures occurred as a result of depositors' fears of losing money in bank failures even in the absence of insurance.

I know that by giving a different cause for an effect, we can weaken the argument.
But in this case, when one cause is partly responsible , is the above statement still valid ?

Hi Karishma,

Please provide your 2 cents on this question: https://gmatclub.com/forum/senator-betw ... 72638.html

IMO, the correct choice attacks the premise of the argument. How can we question the facts presented in the argument?

Thanks!

Hi Karishma,

I have been following your response threads to CR questions, and they are really helpful.

Could you please provide an explanation for the following question:

Airline Representative: The percentage of flight delays caused by airline error decreased significantly this year. This indicates that airlines listened to complaints about preventable errors and addressed the problems. Although delays caused by weather and other uncontrollable factors will always be part of travel, preventable delays are clearly decreasing.

Which of the following most clearly points to a logical flaw in the representative's reasoning?

A. Airlines may be motivated by financial concerns to underreport the percentage of flight delays caused by airline error.

B. The delays caused by uncontrollable factors could have led to an increase in complaints to airlines.

C. Complaints may not be the most reliable measure of how many errors occurred in a given year.

D. Delays caused by weather and other uncontrollable factors could have increased dramatically during the year under discussion.

E. Airline customers might not believe that particular delays were caused by uncontrollable factors rather than airline error.
