Profile Eval Request

Demographics : Indian Male, Engineering, Age 27

Professional Background: 6 years- Operations role(Assistant Manager) at Oil and Gas Industry (PSU) (in Petrochemicals sector).

Academics: B.Tech(Hons.) in Chemical Engineering from a Tier-1 Institute(Top-10 in country) with a CGPA of 8.1/10
CFA L1 qualified(in May,2023), no plans of appearing for L2 as of now.

Extracurricular Activities: Nothing significant. Few awards in Hockey and Fine Arts competitions during college in various inter-hostel competitions.

Post-MBA Aspirations: Work in Supply chain management role.

GMAT: 750 (Q50 V42)

I am planning to apply in R2 and would like to know which programs should I target based on my profile and GMAT score.

👋 Hey kumaraish1195,

I came across your profile evaluation query on the forum and thought I'd reach out to offer some assistance from my own experience.

So here is what I would suggest:

Strengths:
➡️ GMAT Score: Your 750 score (Q50 V42) exceeds the median for nearly all top schools, such as Wharton and INSEAD where average GMATs range around 730-740.

➡️ Academic Background: A B.Tech from a Tier-1 institute with a CGPA of 8.1/10 demonstrates your intellectual capability. Your CFA L1 adds a financial lens to your profile.

➡️ Industry Experience: Six years in the Oil and Gas sector at a PSU, especially in an Operations role, provides you industry-specific knowledge that can enrich classroom discussions.

Areas of improvement:
➡️ Limited Extracurriculars: The lack of significant extracurriculars might create a one-dimensional impression. However, your hockey and fine arts accolades in college could still be leveraged in your applications.

➡️ Age Factor: At 27, you're within the median age for most programs but moving towards the higher end, making now a good time to apply.

Program Suggestions:
➡️ Dream: Wharton, Chicago Booth, INSEAD, LBS
➡️ Competitive: Kellogg, Cornell, Duke, Ross, Imperial, Warwick, ESSEC
➡️ Safe: Babson, Boston, Illinois, Foster, IESEG, Manchester

Final Thoughts:
➡️ Your strong GMAT and industry-specific knowledge make you a solid candidate for R2 applications. Your post-MBA goal in supply chain management aligns well with your existing skill set, further strengthening your profile. The key is to weave these elements together in your application to present a coherent and compelling narrative.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to set up a FREE call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

I want to either pivot to consulting or remain in tech management.
I’m a bit unclear now because of uncertain market conditions.

I appeared for gmat twice and even after preparing hard for it i got

Hello skap24,

I hope you are doing well. Your profile is certainly competitive for MBA programs, but the GMAT score could be a potential concern, especially for some of the schools you've listed. Here is an evaluation of your profile.

1. UAlberta - The Alberta School of Business typically has a competitive MBA program. While your GMAT scores are on the lower side for this school, your strong academic background and work experience in the fintech industry could still make you a competitive candidate. Ensure you highlight your achievements and leadership roles in your application to strengthen your chances.

2. Smith School of Business - The Queen's MBA program at the Smith School of Business is also competitive. Your work experience and academic performance are strong, but the GMAT score may be a concern.

3. UBC Sauder School of Business - UBC is a prestigious institution, and Sauder is known for its MBA program. Your profile is also competitive here, but the GMAT score might be a bit low for their average. However, your work experience and academic achievements could offset this to some extent. Ensure that your application essays and recommendations are strong enough to make a compelling case for admission.

4. John Molson School of Business - Concordia University's John Molson School of Business offers a well-regarded MBA program. Given your strong academic background and work experience, you have a good chance of admission here. While the GMAT score is not ideal, it may not be a deal-breaker if the rest of your application is strong.

Overall, while your GMAT score is not very competitive for these MBA programs, your strong academic background, work experience, and the fact that you've taken on different roles within your company can make your application more compelling. You can consider applying to these schools and highlighting your achievements, leadership, and future career goals in your application essays. Additionally, you may want to address the GMAT score in your optional essay, explaining why you believe it doesn't fully reflect your abilities or potential. If you decide not to retake the GMAT, ensure the rest of your application materials are outstanding to maximize your chances of admission. Consider applying to a mix of reach, match, and safety schools to diversify your options. Consulting and tech management are both valuable career paths that many MBA programs can prepare you for, so your goals align well with the MBA degree.

We offer a limited number of complimentary profile evaluations each week . We match you with the students and alums of top B-Schools according to your background and target schools. In this call, the experts will try to dig out your USP for top B-schools and provide you with honest feedback on your profile and chances to your target schools.

Overall, a solid profile, although it would be helpful to mention the breakdown of the 730 into Q & V. The individual points have some bearing on how adcoms perceive your candidacy.

Your career demonstrates proof of progression and an upward trajectory. I don't see why you would not target the top 20 programs even with a 730. MBA essays are all about passion and how motivated are you to solve a problem you may have seen in an industry or to capitalize on an opportunity in the market. What is your motivation to do an MBA, beyond the next promotion or salary hike that you are seeking? What is the larger vision?

I will answer more specifically to your goals.
If you are interested in applying to top B Schools, for healthcare-related goals, you can have schools like Tuck and Duke MBAs on your list (because of the medical schools' affiliations). Both schools have a solid pharma/healthcare focus and are consulting powerhouses.

Think what skills you bring that you would be someone's preferred choice in an LDP or Biz dev role in healthcare. I think you have much introspection to do here. Healthcare is a nuanced sector where a high level of prior expertise is valued (the recruiting is dominated by former healthcare consultants or doctors or pharma specialists).

You should do your research and understand whether your prior experience in pharma makes you a good match for biz dev roles or whether consulting would be a better launchpad for you in a new job market (new geography). If you go with management consulting, you could pitch generalist consulting roles within the pharma sector in the short term and eventually pivot to a specialist track (depending on what resonates with your interest and prior experience) a few years down the line. Long term you could also pivot to big pharma in leadership positions. Obviously how you express your interest in a particular field within healthcare/pharma will make your candidacy unique.

If you execute the applications exceptionally well, you may add Ross, Darden and Haas to your list.

Get personalized advice tailored to your specific situation. Do not hesitate to reach out to us if you need help navigating your unique circumstances in the B School admissions process.

Your professional experience has potential.
Only stating the GMAT score is half the information. What is the breakdown into Q&V?
I advise applicants to consider GMAT scores in the quantitative and verbal sections individually. Admissions committees evaluate your performance along with that of your peers (from your demographic group) on a bell curve. For example, a Q49 score (~75th percentile) is considered borderline elite for overrepresented populations at top business schools. If your quantitative score is around this threshold, the admissions committee is confident that you can handle the academically demanding curriculum. On the other hand, for native English speakers, a high score on the verbal section works very well with the adcoms as that underscores the applicant has the expected level of acumen in this section.

Your verbal score is more likely to reflect your ability to participate in discussions in a truly diverse group at schools that place a high value on discussion-based pedagogy. Your interview performance will matter a lot.

Get candid advice tailored to your specific situation. We do not cap discussion hours with our applicants

👋 Hey gulluhullu,

Here is a detailed profile evaluation for you!

➡️ Your profile offers a blend of strong academic credentials and family business experience:

➡️ Academic Strengths: Your GMAT score of 740 is competitive for top US B-schools. Securing good grades and an MTech from IIT Roorkee, a prestigious institution, adds to your academic prowess. The extensive research project during your MTech also showcases depth in your field.

➡️ Professional Experience: While you didn't join the railways, your role in your family's business is valuable. Managing operations, accounting, and tax filing are critical business skills. Family businesses often require hands-on management and problem-solving, providing unique learning experiences. Elaborate on how you've made a difference, implemented changes, or improved business processes during your tenure.

➡️ Age and Experience: At 29, you fall within the average age range of many top MBA programs. The key is to elucidate why now is the right time for an MBA and how it aligns with your future aspirations.

To Strengthen Your Application:
➡️ Highlight any leadership roles or initiatives taken in the business.

➡️ Discuss the challenges faced and how you overcame them.

➡️ Address your transition from civil engineering to business and the skills you've acquired.

➡️ Focus on your post-MBA goals. How will an MBA assist in scaling the family business or transitioning to another sector?

In Summary:
Your profile has the elements to be considered by top US B-schools. Ensure your essays, recommendations, and interviews provide a holistic understanding of your journey, ambitions, and the unique perspective you'd bring to an MBA cohort.

Hello Priy22,

I hope you are doing good. You have a competitive profile for top business schools, and with the right application strategy, you can aim for admission to some of the best MBA programs in the world. Your strong academic record in 10th, 12th, and B.Tech, along with an All India Rank of 148 in GATE, demonstrates your academic prowess. A GMAT score of 720 is competitive and should meet the requirements of most top business schools.

Speaking about your work experience, eight years of work experience in a prominent PSU like Indian Oil Corp. Ltd. is a significant asset. Your role as a Production Manager in the Operations Department indicates leadership and management experience. Your leadership roles as Vice-President at the College editorial Board and your achievements in sports showcase your well-rounded personality and leadership skills. Hobbies like writing poetry, painting, and singing add depth to your profile.

Be prepared to explain in your application why you started an MBA at NITIE but didn't complete it. Admissions committees will want to understand the rationale behind your decision to leave the program. While your background in Chemical Engineering and experience at Indian Oil Corp. is valuable, it's essential to highlight how an MBA will enhance your skills and help you transition to a new career path.

Your essays and letters of recommendation will be crucial in conveying your story, career goals, and why you're a strong fit for each specific school. Take the time to craft compelling narratives.

Considering your profile, here are some top business schools that you can target:

1. Harvard Business School (HBS): HBS values diversity and leadership, and your extensive work experience can be a strong asset.

2. Stanford Graduate School of Business: Stanford GSB looks for candidates who have made a significant impact and have a clear vision for the future, both of which you can showcase in your application.

3. Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania: Wharton is known for its strong finance program, and your background in Chemical Engineering and experience at Indian Oil Corp. could be aligned with their offerings.

4. Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University: Kellogg values teamwork and collaboration, which aligns well with your leadership roles and sports achievements.

5. Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College: Tuck has a close-knit community and may appreciate your leadership experience and diverse background.

6. Sloan School of Management, MIT: MIT Sloan is known for its emphasis on innovation and technology, which could be a good fit if you want to leverage your engineering background.

7. Indian School of Business (ISB): For a school in India, ISB is highly reputable and may be a good option, given your background and goals.

Remember that the application process is highly competitive, and each school has its unique culture and criteria for admission. Tailor your application to each institution's strengths and values, and use your essays to explain your career goals and how an MBA from their program will help you achieve them.

Good luck with your applications!

Priy22: thanks for the update.

1. Your academics (10th/12th) and GPA are strong. The GMAT is fine (you didn't mention the split though: a 75th percentile or better in each section would be good), but if you are looking at the "ambitious" schools (list in point 4 below), a 730+ can help. Generally, targeting 10-20 points above a school's average is recommended, given the Indian applicant perspective. The ECs and achievements offer good talking points for essays.

2. Your professional arc is interesting, given the promotions and exposure to energy & operations. Highlighting the transferable skills can help position you for your target roles in consulting. Have clear and concise answers to: why MBA, why now, why you (i.e. vs others), why consulting. These points can help craft strong essays. Also having a plan B (for anyone targeting consulting, given its competitive nature) helps.

3. Consulting firms hiring from B-schools generally prefer younger chaps (with 2-4 years pre-mba work-ex), as they can be placed on generalist projects across sectors. However, more experienced candidates (e.g. like you with an energy background, armed with the MBA) can target specific roles within the (energy) vertical of a consulting firm, or a boutique firm focused on energy consulting. Researching about the firms you would like to work in and their hiring patterns can help.

4. While I'm not comfortable recommending schools based on this initial assessment (I still don't know many of your personal preferences which would impact the list), pls consider this as an initial list of schools to research further and prioritize. These have good alumni presence in consulting, and some are in energy-focused geographies as well.

US: M7 (particularly Booth, Kellogg), Fuqua, Tuck, Ross, Rice, Texas McCombs, Foster, Emory
UK/ Europe: INSEAD, LBS, IESE, HEC, Oxbridge, ESADE

Hope this helps. Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

Your profile is impressive and resonates with me on a personal level. As a woman who has also worked in a production environment, I understand the challenges and rewards that come with developing industrialization plans, creating industrialization specifications, testing plans, troubleshooting process problems, and collaborating with teams at all levels to ensure successful operations.

For your applications, I advise you to construct a strong narrative that showcases your career progression resulting from hard work and perseverance. 8 years in a professional setting is a substantial duration, so present a variety of examples highlighting leadership, empathy, diversity initiatives, teamwork, and other relevant aspects of your profile.

Utilize anecdotes from your professional life to demonstrate your diverse skills (analytical, leadership, and empathetic). Showcase how you motivated teams on the shop floors, expedited projects, achieved desired outcomes, resolved conflicts with persuasive abilities, influenced management decisions through keen observations and insights, and generated value for your team and organization as a whole. Highlight your bias for action and conscientious decision-making capabilities.

Your ECs are alright. But I suggest that you think deeper and analyze whether you have missed considering any mundane/ unobvious/ subtle initiatives you may have taken through the years ( travel, learning a new language, certain diversity initiatives at work, for example, raising your voice against gender discrimination, voicing strong opinions for diversity in the workforce, providing financial or moral support to someone in need, teaching the underprivileged kids, organizing diversity talks or off-site activities for better collaboration among teams, and so on). In my experience, I have seen that applicant struggle to recall in the early stages of application how they contributed toward the betterment of their community. It could take a little introspection to unravel it all.

Typically Supply Chain and Operations leadership tracks are the most suitable goals for people from backgrounds like yours. Just so you know, if you get into the right school, MBBs actively seek individuals with strong Ops experience for management consulting roles in the Ops and strategy Consulting practices. Other roles that you may want to explore are Supply Chain Analytics, Product or Network Planning and Strategy, or Corporate Finance (if you like finance) at small to medium-sized startups. Please feel free to reach out to me to learn more about these options as this is also my area of specialization.

Hey all, A bit of a non traditional profile here-

I’m an HLS grad with 5 years of biglaw M&a with a bit of IP lit. I did engineering UG at MIT (pretty bad gpa, low 3s, engineering was hard for me lol). Currently am late 30s

I took the past few years off to pursue a passion project in art. Had a few pieces featured in some fairly big shows.

Life circumstances have changed and I want to get back into the professional grind. I always played around with the idea of B school, and even applied to do the jd/mba at H but was rejected likely due to bad Ug gpa and not enough work exp. I figure my work exp is sufficient now, and I have an 8 year old GMAT of 760 (I’ll probably have to retake but my guess is it shouldn’t drop lower than mid 700s). And putting aside whether b school is even a good idea for me at this point, what schools do you fine people think I’d have a shot at? Many thanks and looking forward to your responses!

juzam - the UG pedigree and indicative GMAT are good. A few queries before sharing some feedback:

1. Your Biglaw M&A work-ex sounds interesting, have there been any promotions/ progressions? Any key projects you are proud of (to help understand your work profile better)?
2. Have you given some thought on which areas (sectors/ functions) you would like to work in post MBA? Each school has its own strengths, and narrowing down your preferences can be a good starting point.

Thanks, Arvind! I'd say for my biglaw experience, I hit the standard promo of mid-level associate managing deals (running DD and checking junior's work, turning comments from seniors/partner on docs, taking first stab at some of the major agreements, coordinating and interfacing with all specialists, first point of contact for client, etc.). But tbh, a lawyer's work doesn't usually involve "leadership" in the traditional sense. I could say that I displayed a bit more leadership while doing litigation in taking point on a deposition, and a TON more leadership in my pro bono cases where I was the lead lawyer arguing in front of USCIS. But yeah, the M&A work itself wasn't something I was super proud of, which is unfortunate as I can see it being the most relevant to B-school apps haha.

As for post-MBA, this is where I'm a bit stuck. I mainly don't love legal work, and would rather be thinking big picture or driving workflow. I don't mind a bit of stress, I just don't love the feeling of spinning so many wheels on the smallest minutiae. So I don't think I'd love consulting, and I definitely don't want finance exits as that just seems miserable and the $ wouldn't make it worth it to me (all the bankers and PE guys I worked with would have attested). So I'm a bit stuck as to what I really want. Honestly, a dream scenario is to walk into a director level role at a good company, have a 50-hour or less work week, and make 250+ all in first year. But the more I research, the less likely this type of outcome seems, especially given the terrible job market rn for bschool grads. And I'm pretty confident that if I don't go to b-school, I could get a 200k+ in-house counsel job fairly easily. So I'd have that opportunity cost to consider.

So yeah, sorry for dropping so much on you haha. I'm guessing the answer might be that b-school isn't the best option for me. But if you have any other comments or thoughts, I'd be super grateful.
