Which of the following is equal to 85 percent of 160?

(A) 1.88
(B) 13.6
(C) 136
(D) 188
(E) 13,600

85 % of X is same as X-15% of X

160 - (15% of 160) = 160 - (15/100*160) =
160 - 24 = 136

BEFORE you calculate the actual (0.85)(160), scan the answer choices (ALWAYS scan the answer choices, before selecting your approach)
Since the answer choices are VERY SPREAD apart, we can be quite AGGRESSIVE with our estimation.

Notice that 50% of 160 = 80
And 100% of 160 = 160
Since 85% is BETWEEN 50% and 100%, we know that 85% of 160 will be BETWEEN 80 and 160

Answer: C

85 % = 100% - 15%

Now, 10% of 160 = 16 & 5% of 160 = 8 , So 15% of 160 = 24

Take away 160 - 24 = 136 , Answer must be (C)

This question can be solved in under 10 seconds by looking at the answer choices and thinking logically about what the answer COULD be.

1/2 (50%) of 160 = 80. Meaning, we know the answer is >80. Cross off A and B.

Cross off options D and E, as they are both >100% of 160.

This leaves Option C as the answer.

I mean nothing comes close to the right answer.

A and B are too small to be 85% of 160.

D and E are like more than 100% of 160.

Answer C

85 percent of 160 is 160 * 85/100. We can simplify this product to 8 * 17. We can either multiply 8 * 17 = 136, or we can eliminate every answer choice besides C and D, and between those two, we can choose the only one which is divisible by 8, namely 136.

Answer: 136
