Why is the non underline portion of the sentence using a Singular verb "is". The sentence has a plural subject
Please explain ?

(A) like that of earlier generations Incorrect because like is used to compare nouns not clauses.
(B) as it was for earlier generations Correct
(C) as that for earlier generations Incorrect wrong comparison as clause is compared with noun (dreams)
(D) just as earlier generations did Incorrect wrong comparison
(E) as have earlier generations Incorrect

The question says

studying in a decent institution and getting a stable job even if a low paying one is still a dream for a majority of young people as it (refers back to getting a stable job) was (dream) for earlier generations.
