Amount of Pure Mango remains constant only water evaporates.

\(\frac{30}{100}*20=\frac{90}{100}*x\)

hence-\(x=\frac{20}{3}= 6\frac{2}{3}\)

Or if we consider water then:

Let W is the amount of pure water evaporated then form an equation with only water.

\(\frac{70}{100}*20 -w = \frac{10}{100}(20-w)\)

Where \(\frac{70}{100}*20 \)= initial quantity of water in 20Kg Mango
\(w-\) amount of water that evaporates
\(\frac{10}{100}(20-w) \)= amount of water that should remain in dry mango

\(w= \frac{40}{3}\)

Hence weight of Dry mango: \(20 -\frac{40}{3}=\frac{20}{3}= 6\frac{2}{3}\)

CONCEPT: Percentages

-Consider anything complete as 100%.

-Identify and use the “constant” in a question (“Pulp” here that doesn’t change. The amount of
water though varies)

SOLUTION:

Amount of water in 20kgs of fresh mangoes=0.7*20=14kg.

Thus, amount of pulp=20 – 14=6kg.

This amount of pulp is also present in the dry mangoes and makes 90% of its weight. Thus 90% of the weight of dry mangoes=6kg

100% of the weight of dry mangoes=6/90*100 =6.66kg (B)

The question wording is slightly confusing. "We need to find the amount of dry mangoes that will yield an equivalent amount of pulp as 20kg fresh mangoes" If you read it like this, its pretty clear.

20kg fresh mangoes give 6kg pulp. Dry mangoes have 90% pulp. So qty of dry mangoes = 6/90% = 6.67 i.e. B

Solution:

In 20 kg of fresh mangoes, 0.7 x 20 = 14 kg are water, and thus 6 kg are the “meat” of the mangoes. Since only water evaporates, the 6 kg of mango meat still remains and they constitute 90% of the weight of the dry mangoes (recall that the remaining 10% is water). Therefore, the total weight of the dry mangoes is 6/0.9 = 60/9 = 6 6/9 = 6 ⅔ kg.

Approach and Working Out


    • 20 kg of fresh mango will have the non-water part as 30%.
      o 30% of 20 kg = 6 kg.

    • Dry mango has 90% non-water part.
      o Hence, 90% must be equivalent to 6kg.
      o 100% will be \(\frac{(6 × 100)}{90}\)
      o 6 \(\frac{2}{3 }\) kg

Correct Answer: Option B
