Answer: B. This is a structure question. Find the conclusion and the premise:

Premise: People who perform so-called altruistic acts are really satisfying their personal need for attention or glory.

Conclusion: There is no such thing as pure altruism. Thus, the first statement is the conclusion and the second is the premise, or justification, as choice B states.

Ethicist: There is no such thing as pure altruism. Most people would like to believe that they are being selfless when they assist others, but in actuality, their actions are designed solely to benefit themselves. People who perform so called altruistic acts are really satisfying their personal need for attention or glory.

The bolded phrases in the argument play which of the following roles in the argument?

A. The first phrase supports the conclusion reached in the second phrase.
B. The first phrase contains the ethicist’s conclusion, while the second phrase provides a justification for this view.
C. The first phrase is an assumption necessary to accept the truth of the second phrase.
D. The second phrase provides the author’s main conclusion and the first phrase explains the key term in the argument.
E. The second phrase presents a conclusion that the first phrase challenges.

Hello SajjadAhmad,

In your original post, the first bold phrase is just the Ethicist:. You would need to bold the phrase --> There is no such thing as pure altruism.

Only then the two phrases would make sense.

The first is a conclusion and second explains the reason

Re: Ethicist: There is no such thing as pure altruism. Most people would l [#permalink]
There is one primary conclusion: There is no such thing as pure altruism.

Premise1: Most people would like to believe that they are being selfless when they assist others,

Premise2: but in actuality, their actions are designed solely to benefit themselves.

Premise 3: People who perform so called altruistic acts are really satisfying their personal need for attention or glory.

The bolded phrases in the argument play which of the following roles in the argument?

A. The first phrase supports the conclusion reached in the second phrase.
There is no conclusion in the second phrase. In this case, there is only one conclusion, which is stated above.

B. The first phrase contains the ethicist’s conclusion, while the second phrase provides a justification for this view.
Correct.

I believe warrior guy is correct. I believe you need to bold the entire sentence and not just one word.
The way its currently bolded doesn't make it clear what the phrases are.

In such ques where you have to find which phrase is the conclusion and which phrase is the premise, always use the contextual ques "X hence Y", where X is the Premise and Y is the Conclusion.

So ask the ques: There is no such thing as pure altruism, hence Most people would like to believe that they are being selfless when they assist others, but in actuality, their actions are designed solely to benefit themselves

OR

Most people would like to believe that they are being selfless when they assist others, but in actuality, their actions are designed solely to benefit themselves, hence There is no such thing as pure altruism.

Kudos++ if the explanation helped.
