Re: It is not in fact a whale, but the whale shark is as large as some spe [#permalink]
It is not in fact a whale, but the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, which measures up to 42 feet from tooth to fin.

A. It is not in fact a whale, but the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, which measures
which measures modifies whales and not the whale shark

B. Although it is not in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, which measures
which measures modifies whales and not the whale shark

C. Not in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, measuring
Not in fact a whale is modifying the whale shark and measuring is also correctly modifying it.

D. Though not in fact a whale but it is as large as some species of whales, the whale shark measures
Redundancy in though... but is incorrect.

E. Despite not being in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, measuring
Use of being is incorrect.

Re: It is not in fact a whale, but the whale shark is as large as some spe [#permalink]
Sentence: It is not in fact a whale, but the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, which measures up to 42 feet from tooth to fin.
I think the answer is C.

A. It is not in fact a whale, but the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, which measures- "which" incorrectly modifies whales

B. Although it is not in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, which measures- "which" incorrectly modifies whales

C. Not in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, measuring- No issue

D. Though not in fact a whale but it is as large as some species of whales, the whale shark measures- Though, but are two contrast words, redundant. Only one is required.

E. Despite not being in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, measuring- Despite not being/ infact are also redundant.

Re: It is not in fact a whale, but the whale shark is as large as some spe [#permalink]
A. It is not in fact a whale, but the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, which measures : Subject is " the whale shark " , but which is referring to species of whales. Incorrect

B. Although it is not in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, which measures : same problem as A

C. Not in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, measuring Correct: Measuring is modifier which is providing extra information about whale shark
D. Though not in fact a whale but it is as large as some species of whales, the whale shark measures : It corrects problem which is in A, but introduces redundancy issue : though and But

E. Despite not being in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, measuring : Being is not needed

A. It is not in fact a whale, but the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, which measures-----incorrect SVA

B. Although it is not in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, which measures----incorrect SVA

C. Not in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, measuring-----CORRECT

D. Though not in fact a whale but it is as large as some species of whales, the whale shark measures----incorrect connection of independent clauses.

E. Despite not being in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, measuring-----incorrect construction

C is the answer IMO.

It is not in fact a whale, but the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, which measures up to 42 feet from tooth to fin.

A. It is not in fact a whale, but the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, which measures:- Some species are plural. Which measures is SV error.

B. Although it is not in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, which measures:- Same as A

C. Not in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, measuring:-Keep

D. Though not in fact a whale but it is as large as some species of whales, the whale shark measures:- The shark doesnt do the act of measuring.

E. Despite not being in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, measuring:-Keep

BEtween C & E,

C. Not in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, measuring:-Keep
E. Despite not being in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, measuring:-Keep

C conveys the same message albait in lesser words.

E. Despite not being in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, measuring

The correct answer choice is (C)

Answer choices (A) and (B) incorrectly use "which" to refer back to the whale shark
Answer choice (D) redundantly introduces the whale shark with "though ... but" and creates a comma splice as both clauses have a subject and verb
Answer choice (E) incorrectly uses the modifier "being"

A. It is not in fact a whale, but the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, which measures

B. Although it is not in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, which measures

D. Though not in fact a whale but it is as large as some species of whales, the whale shark measures

E. Despite not being in fact a whale, the whale shark is as large as some species of whales, measuring

Official Explanation

Creating a filter: there's a problem with the original sentence: the phrase "which measures" appears to point back to "species of whales," but that's against the intended meaning of the sentence.

Applying the filter: scanning the answer choices, we see (B) retains the problem, so (B) is out. Choice (D) has defects: "though not in fact a whale" should modify a noun set off by a comma but instead drives into a clause with a subordinate conjunction; that's ungrammatical. Choice (E) is an inferior version of (C) with an unnecessary gerund, "being."

The correct answer is (C).

Would experts shade some more lights how C is correct?
Especially how “NOT IN FACT A WHALE” modifies “Shark Wales”?
