Q1. A car manufacturer, in an upgraded model of a car, introduced a new gearbox technology which improved the fuel efficiency. However, when the new model was sold with the old model, it was found that customers preferred the old model. The manufacturer concluded that fuel efficiency was not a major concern for the customers.

Which one of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the manufacturer’s conclusion?

(A) In the cities where the old model was retired, the sale of the new model flourished.

(B) Since the old model has been around for years, it was easier for customers to trust the fuel efficiency of the car in the long run

(C) 70% of the cars bought in this specific period of observation were second cars in the households, and were primarily used for long distance travel.

(D) The new model had significant design changes and the customers found the old design better.

(E) The difference in the prices of the models was insignificant.

Q2. The most serious objection I have regarding the advertisements shown on TV is that they often denounce the products or services by their competitors to proclaim their own superiority. This is unfair. If every company follows this practice, it will be very difficult for consumers to decide which products and services are better than others. The first step towards correcting this could be ______.

Which of the following best completes the passage?

(A) a restriction that only the closest competitor can be included in the TV advertisements
(B) a limit on duration for which the competitors can be mentioned in the TV advertisements
(C) a law that forbids mention of any competitor in the TV advertisements
(D) an increase in information related to features, quality, and cost of products/services in the TV advertisements
(E) a limit on the number of times advertisements are shown on TV

Today’s CR Butler Questions :

Q1. Analyst: Many of the several promises made by People’s Party since the last elections have not really been delivered. There is an apparent apathy in People’s Party to carry out any major change. Since the People’s Party does not seem to be oriented towards making concrete, timely progress, all hopes in the next election must be placed on the Republican Party. Republican Party proposes to bring out large-scale reforms in the public sector, including reforms in areas of primary education, infrastructure, and healthcare within one year of its coming to power.

People’s Party: It is not entirely true that People’s Party is suffering from apathy. Issues related to primary education and infrastructure are very complex and no immediate solutions exist; however, we are working on these issues and the people of the country will see the results. Further, People’s Party is definitely focusing on improving the healthcare system. Additionally, Republican Party’s stand on these issues is outdated and will not help the country in the coming times.

Which of the following indicates the biggest weakness in People’s Party’s response to the Analyst?

(A) It does not clarify its stand on important issues beyond the ones raised by the Analyst.
(B) It failed to explain why the reforms could not be brought till date.
(C) It did not iterate the fundamental principles that the People’s Party adheres to.
(D) It replied to the accusation of not keeping promises by another set of promises with no concrete timeline.
(E) It failed to build a strong case against the Republican Party.

Q2. Following the best project management practices is believed to improve project success. However, even after training the entire project team on the best project management practices last month, the monthly project deliverables were late. Obviously, our project team failed to learn from training.

Which of the following,if true, would most weaken the conclusion above?

A. Effects of following the best project management practices often show up after a few months of application.
B. Projects team that have undergone the best management training often miss monthly deadlines.
C. The monthly project deliverables last month were later only by 2 days, an insignificant duration that could not really have impacted project success.
D. Although the best project management practices generally improve project success, there are exceptions.
E. The delay was because of external dependencies and the project team did not have any control over those factors.

A has no verb, out
B meaning issue - its as if the hotel is inspiring, which is wrong
C - meaning issue
D - tense and meaning issue. If I am understanding properly, the hotel was used for inspiration in the 1970s but was generally known for hosting events. Without past perfect it seems like this only occured in the 1970s.
E - usage of past perfect is correct and gives clear timeline

This is present (commitment) so we need will. BE out.
D vs C. D uses passive voice, which is not automatically incorrect. C has better and simpler construction imo, so D is out.
A has a meaning issue. the modifier at the end is absloute phrase. This modifies the entire phrase, which is illogical. the airports vote did not maintain the high growth rates.
C should be correct

Today’s CR Questions :

Q1. Since 1945 there have been numerous international confrontations as tense as those that precipitated the Second World War, and yet no large-scale conflict has resulted. To explain this, some argue that fear of enormous destruction such as the Second World War produced has had a dramatic deterrent effect.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the deterrent theory mentioned above?

(A) After the First World War, the fear of great future destruction was as intense as it was after the Second World War.

(B) Psychologists have determined that fear of retaliation tends to temper aggressiveness among human beings.

(C) The Second World War was far less destructive than most people generally believe.

(D) Fear of repeating the levels of destructions that the Second World War produced is as pervasive today as it was forty years age.

(E) Many of the international confrontations that have occurred since 1945 have involved countries that participated in the Second World War.

Q1. Many policymakers and economists agree that the Arboria needs to curb domestic demand for foreign goods while investing in new domestic industrial capacity, a shift that both should result in increased exports and reclaim domestic markets that are lost to imported goods.

A. both should result in increased exports and reclaim domestic markets that are

B. should both result in increased exports and domestic markets being reclaimed that were

C. should result in both increased exports and reclaim domestic markets

D. should result both in increased exports and domestic markets being reclaimed that had been

E. should result in both increased exports and the reclaiming of domestic markets

A) is out for parallelism issue (both a shift that should result in increased exports and a shift that reclaim)
B) is out for parallelism issue (both a shift that should result in increased exports and a shift that should domestic markets)
C) is out for parallelism issue (both should result in increased exports and should result in reclaim domestic markets)
D) is out for parallelism issue (both a shift that should result in increased exports and a shift that should result domestic markets)
E) is last contender, and has perfect parallelism (both a shift that should result in increased exports and a shift that should result in the reclaiming of domestic markets lost to imported goods).

easily eliminate D and E. There is no referrent for they - NATO and Russia are both singular.
B has a slight meaning issue. It implies that the relationship of NATO was hostile, not the relationship between NATO and Russia. so B is out.
We are left with A and C. Now, technically, both are fine in my opinion - it clearly refers to NATO, since they are the only one who can "offer membership". But the GMAT does not use outside information to determine, the right answer, so it must be C, since it’s somewhat more clear than A.

IMO the second SC question was not of good quality. GMAT wouldn’t make a question like that.

Q2. Editorial: To qualify as an effective law, as opposed to merely an impressive declaration, a command must be backed up by an effective enforcement mechanism. That is why societies have police. The power of the police to enforce a society’s laws makes those laws effective. But there is currently no international police force. Hence, what is called “international law” is not effective law.

Which one of the following is an assumption required by the editorial’s argument?

(A) No one obeys a command unless mechanisms exist to compel obedience.

(B) If an international police force were established, then so-called international law would become effective law.

(C) The only difference between international law and the law of an individual society is the former’s lack of an effective enforcement mechanism.

(D) The primary purpose of a police force is to enforce the laws of the society.

(E) Only an international police force could effectively enforce international law.
