E looks correct to me as well

A,B support

C is tempting but doesn’t really change the conclusion

D might explain why they chose to investigate, but doesnt really weaken

E suggests there is some benefit to the new pesticides (longer effect), implying that maybe the research had a purpose

Q3. Confucianism, a Chinese ethical and philosophical system, is based on five virtues: Humanness, Righteousness or Justice, Propriety or Etiquette, Knowledge, and Integrity. Confucius, the individual behind the philosophy, also introduces the idea of meritocracy, leading to the introduction of the imperial examination system in China. The system allowed anyone who passed a morality examination to become a government officer. Confucian governments, thus, attempted to replace “nobility of blood” with “nobility of virtue”. As a result, Confucian governments, however virtuous and moral, remained undemocratic.

Which of the following is an assumption made by the argument above?

A. Not every citizen participated in the Imperial examination system and hence government officers consequently chosen did not represent ‘voice of people’.

B. Ideas such as imperial examination system are central to the philosophy of democracy.

C. Confucian governments are not as effective as democratic governments.

D. Passing a morality exam leads to a non-democratic government.

E. It is not possible for a government to maintain “nobility of virtue” while ensuring a fair representation of the views of entire cross section of society

D.

I think you ignore conclusion. Conclusion talks about virtuous and moral

First split - could/was
I believe that could is better here, since the second plane was the only one with the capability to rival the first. Elim BCE.
A vs C
A is much clearer, and has no issues - Concored was.. and only the Topelev could rival it (cleary refers to Concored) for speed.
C is a lot less clear "could be its rival as to speed". As to speed is nonsense, could be its rival is also not the best.
A imo.

Q1. In a study of the effect of pollution from underwater oil rigs on the fish population in the rigs’ vicinity, researchers compared fish caught in areas near oil rigs with those caught in areas more than a hundred miles away from any oil rig. Finding no differences in the health of the fish in the two catches, the researchers concluded that pollution from oil rigs poses no serious health hazard to the fish population in the rigs’ vicinity.

Which one of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the researchers’ argument?

A. Only a radius of ten miles around oil rigs was considered for the study

B. The fish ecosystems in the two areas sampled were not similar; one area was cold and overcast while the other was hot and sunny.

C. Pollution from oil rigs affects the mating, and therefore, egg-laying behaviour of fish

D. Only a small number of oil rigs are present underwater.

E. The research did not include the long-term of pollution on plants on which the fish survive.

Q2. The cultures of two closely located cities have generally been found to be identical. When one of such twin cities sees an economic slowdown, the event overlaps with increased crime rate in it as compared to the other city. When the economic health is similar in both cities, the two cities exhibit similar crime rates. Therefore, this finding provides definitive evidence that crime rate is a direct result of slowing economy.

Which one of the following is an assumption required by the argument?

(A) Reliable studies have found that lack of financial well-being increases the likelihood of criminal behavior in individuals.
(B) Increasing crime rate is not a cause of slowing economy.
(C) Economy of a city with twin city is generally no slower than another city with no twin.
(D) In a pair of twin cities both suffering from high crime rate, the economies are equally slow.
(E) Twin cities are no less likely to suffer from high crime rate than other cities with no twin.

Q4. The new research on pesticides that cost the government about half a million dollars has led to the development of the so-called improved version of commonly used pesticides. According to the claims, the new, improved pesticides will save the crops from common diseases. A closer examination will suggest that the currently used pesticides anyway save the crops from all the common diseases and are significantly cheaper as well. Surely there was no point in spending taxpayers’ money in this research.

Which one of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the author’s conclusion?

A. The currently used pesticides are relatively easier to use.
B. The new pesticides require cold storage which adds to the cost for the farmers.
C. It is mandated by a government policy that a fixed amount of taxpayers’ money be dedicated to research activities.
D. Any innovation is first treated with skepticism; the new pesticides are no different.
E. The effect of new pesticides lasts considerably longer than that of the currently used pesticides.

Today’s CR Butler Questions :

Q1. A car manufacturer, in an upgraded model of a car, introduced a new gearbox technology which improved the fuel efficiency. However, when the new model was sold with the old model, it was found that customers preferred the old model. The manufacturer concluded that fuel efficiency was not a major concern for the customers.

Which one of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the manufacturer’s conclusion?

(A) In the cities where the old model was retired, the sale of the new model flourished.

(B) Since the old model has been around for years, it was easier for customers to trust the fuel efficiency of the car in the long run

(C) 70% of the cars bought in this specific period of observation were second cars in the households, and were primarily used for long distance travel.

(D) The new model had significant design changes and the customers found the old design better.

(E) The difference in the prices of the models was insignificant.

Q2. The most serious objection I have regarding the advertisements shown on TV is that they often denounce the products or services by their competitors to proclaim their own superiority. This is unfair. If every company follows this practice, it will be very difficult for consumers to decide which products and services are better than others. The first step towards correcting this could be ______.

Which of the following best completes the passage?

(A) a restriction that only the closest competitor can be included in the TV advertisements
(B) a limit on duration for which the competitors can be mentioned in the TV advertisements
(C) a law that forbids mention of any competitor in the TV advertisements
(D) an increase in information related to features, quality, and cost of products/services in the TV advertisements
(E) a limit on the number of times advertisements are shown on TV

Re: Verbal Question of the Day Chat Group [#permalink]
came across this lovely q today

Two doctrines have been greatly influential in this century. The first holds that the explanation of any historical event must appeal to economic factors. The second attempts to account psychologically for all historical events especially in terms of early childhood experience. Both doctrines, however, are mistaken. Certainly, there have been events that were due both to economic forces and to the nature of the early childhood experiences of the major participants in the event.

The argument depends on assuming which one of the following.

A) The first doctrine precludes any noneconomic factors in explanations of historical events.
B) The second doctrine places importance only on childhood experiences.
C) Historical events are influenced as much or as little by economic factors as by psychological factors.
D) One is likely to find that both economic and psychological explanations have been proposed for any given historical event.
E) Appeals to both economics and psychological factors are needed to understand any historical event properly.

Read very carefully and you can get this

None of the answers appear to be correct. A) and B) are the only ones in contention, but both are too extreme. For example, for A), we don’t ‘require’ that the first doctrine precludes ANY non-economic factors. We just require that it excludes ‘psychological’ factors. (since Non-economic factors can also be non-psychological - say political or religious). So it’s not an assumption that we NEED to have in order for the argument to hold. Same logic goes for B).

It should be A.
The language does not say the doctrine accounts for any historical events exclusively with eco factors

It holds in first and later prevented in assumption

This is an official LSAT question. There is a 100% correct answer, and it’s very elegant imo. Understand the passage carefully. I suggest noting each logical step the author makes here.
