I I like always to answer to your question mike

Not only for.....but also FOR

So C D E

Code is singular, so C E

E the difference between. The difference pf humans make no sense

E is the best

A. the differences between modern humans as opposed to earlier hominids, and yet most are
B. the differences between modern humans and earlier hominids, and yet most is
C. for the differences of modern humans from earlier hominids, and yet most is
D. for the differences of modern humans from earlier hominids, and yet most are
E. for the differences between modern humans and earlier hominids, and yet most is

For a discussion of indefinite pronouns & modifiers (such as "most"), as well as the explanation to this question, see:

Mike :-)

A. the differences between modern humans as opposed to earlier hominids, and yet most are
B. the differences between modern humans and earlier hominids, and yet most is
C. for the differences of modern humans from earlier hominids, and yet most is
D. for the differences of modern humans from earlier hominids, and yet most are
E. for the differences between modern humans and earlier hominids, and yet most is

The sentence format: not only for X but also for Y .So (A) and (B)- eliminated.
Down to (c),(d),(e)
Either it should be differences between A and B or A is different from B... so (E) is the only answer choice that fits. Also (D) can be eliminated as "are" is written though the subject is plural.

Dear sanjeebpanda,
In that sentence, the "most" referred to "most of the genetic code of hominids", an uncountable noun, which is singular. Whenever a SANAM word appears alone in the second half of the sentence, it is always referring to something in the first half of the sentence, and you often have to use logic to figure out the exact nature of the comparison. You can see more examples in the link I posted in the question at the top.

Dear nuttyxtreme,

This is Mike McGarry, author of this question. I'm happy to respond. :-)

Here, principle conjunction is "and" and the word "yet" is an adverb that adds emphasis. And, yes, "yes" could be used as a conjunction on its own.

Does this make sense?

Re: The genetic code of hominids accounts not only for all curre [#permalink]
Here is OE found from Magoosh website.

3) Split #1: the once outside or twice inside construction. It would be correct to say “for not only P but also Q”, or to say “not only for P but also for Q.” The “for” comes after “not only” in the non-underlined part of the sentence, so this means we must choose the “twice inside” structure. Another “for” must follow the words “but also”. Choice (A) & (B) are incorrect.

Split #2: the idiom with “difference.” The correct idioms are “difference between P and Q“ or “difference of P from Q”. The structures “difference between P as opposed to Q” and “difference of P with Q” are abominably incorrect. Choice (A) & (B) & (E) are incorrect.

Split #3: SV Agreement. The subject of the second clause is the word “most” — most what? Most of “the genetic code of hominids“, which is singular. We need the singular verb “is“. Choice (A) & (D) are incorrect.

For all these reasons, (C) is the only possible answer.

A. the differences between modern humans as opposed to earlier hominids, and yet most are
B. the differences of modern humans with earlier hominids, and yet most is
C. for the differences of modern humans from earlier hominids, and yet most is
D. for the differences of modern humans from earlier hominids, and yet most are
E. for the differences of modern humans with earlier hominids, and yet most is

A,B - Unparallel not only for... but also for..
E - Unidiomatic construction differences with
D - Subject - Verb agreement Genetic code -- are.

Hence, C is the Answer.

Intent of the sentence, is to say how different is the genetec code of a species from other species’s genetic code.

Correct Idiom -> Not Only x But also y
With that in mind

Eliminate A and B

Out of C, D and E
Genetic code of humanoids will be singular that is why we will use singular “is”, Differenf from should be used as stated by me in pre think.

Answer C

The genetic code of hominids accounts not only for all curre [#permalink]
Not only for...but also for... :)

Code is singular, so the verb that came after should be ''is''.

The GMAT prefers ''from'' instead of ''with''.

Answer C.

Hi Mike, I know this is an old question but I will still go ahead and ask my doubt.
Can you please help me understand how to choose between differences of A from B and differences of A with B?
I was down to C and E but ended up selecting E.
Thank you!

The genetic code of hominids accounts not only for all current human diversity but also the differences between modern humans as opposed to earlier hominids, and yet most are identical to the genetic code of chimpanzees.

A. the differences between modern humans as opposed to earlier hominids, and yet most are-idiom issue not only X but also Y

B. the differences of modern humans with earlier hominids, and yet most is- idiom issue not only X but also Y

C. for the differences of modern humans from earlier hominids, and yet most is- Correct

D. for the differences of modern humans from earlier hominids, and yet most are- most is followed by eliiplsis, thus the subject will be most of genetic code of hominids which is singular thus verb must be singular

E. for the differences of modern humans with earlier hominids, and yet most is- idiom issue differences of X from Y
