In a survey to collect data about sales of cars in various towns, it was found that the residents of the town BMWdorf buy more cars than the residents of the town Volkswagendorf. From this information it was concluded that the residents of the town BMWdorf are more fascinated with cars than those of the town Volkswagendorf.

All of the following statements, if true, weaken the argument, except which one?

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf.-- This is weakening. If there are 100 people in BMWdorf and 50% buy car its 50 car sold. IN Volkswagendorf if there are only 20 people and 100% by car, still the sale of car will be more in BMWdorf but that doesn't imply they are more fascinated.

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf. - Weakener-- its not that BMWdorf is buying more its that Volkswagendorf is buying less as their average income is less. So relatively, BMWdorf's sale is more

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf.- weakener - Its is possible that because of this reason people in BMWdorf buy more car and not because they are fascinated. A new information that is weakening the ..more sale due more fascination linkage

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf. - This is the right answer. If public transport is cheaper
why will people buy more car, This not creating any impact. It is instead questioning the premise
.

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf. -- Another reason to support that people in BMWDorf have no other better choice but to drive a car and hence they buy car more not because they are fascinated- This too is a weakener

Correct answer : Choice D

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf. - Wrong : this weakens the idea that BMW town ppl were ACTUALLY fascinated with buying cars. Its just that there are more ppl there

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf. - Wrong : this weakens the idea that BMW town ppl were ACTUALLY fascinated with buying cars. Its just that they have relatively more money

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf. - Wrong : this weakens the idea that BMW town ppl were ACTUALLY fascinated with buying cars. Its just that rules are a bit relaxed there

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf. - Correct. This choice suggests that , inspite of the cheaper public transport, they still buy cars. Hence they MUST BE fascinated with cars

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf. - Wrong : This choice suggests that volkswagan ppl have relatively less interest instead of the point that bmw ppl have more interest.

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf. - may or may not weaken..Incorrect

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf. Avg income may be high enough to afford cars.. may or may not weaken..Incorrect

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf. this may or may not weaken..Incorrect

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf. Again it may or may not weaken..Incorrect

the correct answer is D:
choice A, weak the argument by finding another explanation; maybe it is because the population of BMWdorf is higher is the reason why car sales are big.
choice B, weak the argument because if people have lower income they will not buy car , this is an explanation on why sales are higher in BMW dorf
Choice C weak the argument by finding another explanation of why people in BMWdorf are buying more cars than volwsagerdorf
choice D, strengthen the argument; if public transport is cheaper in BMWdorf than it could be that the reason behind the car sales is car fascination
Choice E, weak the argument by finding another explanation on why people of BMWdorf buy more cars.

Weaken the claim that the residents of the town BMWdorf are more fascinated with cars than those of the town Volkswagendorf.
Population of BMW high-weaken the statement because here population is more mean alternative cause of more car
B-lower income of Volks also alternate cause of less car of volks
Calso alternate cause
D-public transport cheaper in volks so alternate cause
E irrelevant so ans E

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf: It again weaken the argument. Reject
C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf: Weaken the argument. Reject

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf: Strengthen the argument as even with cheaper & convenient options, residents purchase cars. Right Opiton

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf: Weaken the argument. Reject

This is a weaken question and hence I am looking at it like this "How can we prove that BMWdorf residents are NOT more fascinated with cars that Volkswagendorf residents"
Option A clearly stands out for me, since it negates the core idea of fascination and tells us that BMWdorf simply has more residents than the Volkswagendorf, and hence more cars are sold in BMWdorf

This seems correct, if public transport is cheaper and more convenient, then the reason strengthens the conclusion "BMWdorf are more fascinated with cars than those of the town Volkswagendorf"

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf.

This weakens the argument

This is a weakener as this gives an alternative option behind residents of BMWdorf buying more cars than people of Volkswagendorf
B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf.
This is also a weakener. As the people of Volkswagendorf have less income thus they bought less cars
C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf.
This is a weakener. Volkswagendorf residents are unable to buy more cars due to environment regulations
D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf.
This is the correct option. This is not related to the fact that people of BMWdorf are buying more cars
E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf.
This could be another reason for Volkswagendorf people not buying cars.t hus this is another weakener

Conclusion: the residents of the town BMWdorf are more fascinated with cars than those of the town Volkswagendorf.

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf.
INCORRECT. This weakens the argument by giving us an alternate reason. BMWdorf having higher population than Volkswagendorf may be the cause as to why residents of the town BMWdorf have bought more total cars han the residents of the town Volkswagendorf

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf.
INCORRECT. This weakens the argument by giving us an alternate reason. The lower average income of residents of Volkswagendorf may explain why people refrain from buying more cars than people of BMWdorf.

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf.
INCORRECT. This weakens the argument by giving us an alternate reason. The residents of Volkswagendorf may not buy more cars just because there are more restricting environment related rules.

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf.
CORRECT This does not weaken. This may slightly strengthen the argument in fact by eliminating an alternate reason for the conclusion. In this case, even with better and cheaper public transport, residents of BMWdorf have bought more cars than residents of Volkswagendorf. This could indeed mean that the residents of the town BMWdorf are more fascinated with cars than those of the town Volkswagendorf.

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf.
INCORRECT. This weakens the argument by giving us an alternate reason. This shows that since it is safer for bicycle riders to ride bicycles in Volkswagendorf, residents there may just prefer bicycles over cars, and thus refrain from buying more cars.

Fact 1: the residents of the town BMWdorf buy more cars than the residents of the town Volkswagendorf.
Conclusion: the residents of the town BMWdorf are more fascinated with cars than those of the town Volkswagendorf.

To find argument that is unable to weaken the conclusion.

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf.
--> This gives an alternate reason why residents of BMWdorf buy more cares. It is not due to fascination with cars but because the population is higher in BMWdorf town.

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf.
--> This gives an alternate reason why Volkswagendorf are unable to buy more cares than BMWdorf residents.

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf.
--> This gives an alternate reason why Volkswagendorf are unable to buy more cares than BMWdorf residents.

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf.
--> This gives an alternate reason why Volkswagendorf are unable to buy more cares than BMWdorf residents.

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf.
--> Bicycle lanes are outside the context of given argument. We do not know how bicycle lanes affect the car buying decision of residents of both towns. This fact is unable to weaken the argument.

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf. -- This weakens as if more people means they buy more cars

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf. -- This weakens as if more income means more cars -- Incorrect

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf. --- Weakens as stricter implementation means lesser cars -- Weakens

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf. -- strengthens because inspite of cheaper and convinient cars people in BMWdorf are buying more cars -- CORRECT

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf. --- safer lanes for bicycle means lesser cars -- Incorrect
