Re: GMAT Club World Cup 2022 (DAY 6): In a survey to collect data about [#permalink]
In a survey to collect data about sales of cars in various towns, it was found that the residents of the town BMWdorf buy more cars than the residents of the town Volkswagendorf. From this information it was concluded that the residents of the town BMWdorf are more fascinated with cars than those of the town Volkswagendorf.

All of the following statements, if true, weaken the argument, except which one?

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf. - Population of BMW is 1 000 and Volkswagen is 800, residents of BMW purchase 700 cars and Volkswagen 600 cars, in proprtion 70% of residents of BMW own cars and 75% of residents of Volkswagen won cars, so A is weakens the conclusion.

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf.

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf.

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf.

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf.

Answer: D

In a survey to collect data about sales of cars in various towns, it was found that the residents of the town BMWdorf buy more cars than the residents of the town Volkswagendorf. From this information it was concluded that the residents of the town BMWdorf are more fascinated with cars than those of the town Volkswagendorf.

All of the following statements, if true, weaken the argument, except which one?

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf. --> Incorrect. Since population is higher => sales can be higher. With this it can't be concluded that residents of town BMWdorf are more fascinated with cars than those of town Volkswagendorf. This weakens the argument.

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf. --> Incorrect. This also weakens. lower average income can translate into less sales of cars.

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf. --> Incorrect. This again weakens. rules restricting buying can lead to less sales of cars which cannot be used as justification about fascination with cars.

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf. --> Correct. Even though transportation is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf, sales of cars are higher. This can be used to justify that residents of BMWdorf are more fascinated with cars that those of Volkwagendorf. This strengthens the argument.

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf. --> Incorrect. Since riding bicycle is safer, this could be the reason why people are buying less cars. Doesn't mean they are less fascinated. This weakens the argument.

Conclusion made from the survey is that the residents of the town BMWdorf are more fascinated with cars than those of the town Volkswagendorf.
The weakening answer choice should give an alternative reason for the residents of the town BMWdorf buying more cars than those of the town Volkswagendorf.
Choices A, B, C and E are all weakeners.
However, choice D is a strengthener, because cheaper and convenient use of public transport will lead the residents of the town BMWdorf to not to buy cars. However, they are still buying more cars means that they may be fascinated to do so.
Hence, answer D.

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf.--This is giving an alternate reason .therefore weakening

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf.Again weakening the conclusion .

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf.this is giving alternate reason making the conclusion weaken

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf. This is supporting the conclusion that in spite public transport being cheaper in BMWdorf people are still buying more cars .

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf.this is weakening our conclusion

Conclusion is that the residents of BMWdorf are more fascinated with cars than those of the town Volkswagendorf. We have to find and eliminate all those options that show other reasons for more car purchase in BMWdorf.

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf.
Since population is high, so more people will purchase cars in BMWdorf. Eliminate.

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf.
The residents of Volkswagendorf have low income so they purchase low as compared to BMWdorf. Eliminate.

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf.
People purchase more in BMWdorf because of less restrictions. Eliminate.

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf.
Correct. This option tells that even though the public transport is cheaper, the people prefer to purchase cars because they are fascinated by cars.

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf.
Again less road restrictions in BMWdorf makes them to purchase the cars. Eliminate.

Thank you sayantanc2k for the question!!!

We need to find an option which doesn’t provide an alternate option for the purchase of more No of cars by residents of town B. Alternatively we can also select the option which tells us why residents of town V do not purchase cars and reject that option. The Argument tells us that residents of B purchase more cars because they are fascinated with cars.

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf.
If the population of town B is more than it can be safely assumed that the cars will be sold more in that town. Provides an alternative option. Hence not the answer.

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf.
It tells that purchasing power of the residents of town V is less that’s why they purchase less car (even if we assume that residents of town V purchase as per the normal average). B is out.

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf.
It tells that Govt of V discourages the use of personal vehicles and hence residents do not buy more cars even if they are having money. C is out

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf.
This will actually promote residents of B to use public transport. But still they purchasing more cars. Hence is is not an alternate option. Hold on to D

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf.
Again provides an alternate reasoning as to why residents of V don’t use cars and hence they purchase less. Eliminate E

D is our answer.

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf. - INCORRECT
-This weakens the argument : more residents of BMWdorf might be buying cars because they are more in number and has nothing to do with fascination with cars. The proportion can still be the same or residents of V buy proportionately more, showing more fascination

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf. - INCORRECT
-As residents of Volkswagendorf have lower avg income, less people might be able to afford cars even if they are more fascinated with cars than people of BMWdorf : Weakens

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf.-INCORRECT
-The residents of Volkswagendorf might be more fascinated with cars but buy less because of the strict environment related rules restricting the buying of personal vehicles :Weakens

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf. - CORRECT
- This does not weaken the argument - if the public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf then it might be because the residents of BMWdorf are more fascinated with cars

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf. -INCORRECT
- Weakens: The residents of BMWdorf might be buying more cars than the residents of Volkswagendorf because it is safer than bicycles due to unsafe roads - they might not be fascinated and only buying cars because of no alternate option.

Cars (BMWdorf) >> Cars (Volkswagendorf)
Hence
The fascination of Cars (BMWdorf) >> The fascination of Cars (Volkswagendorf)

We either need an alternate explanation for the higher number of cars or something that makes the statement false

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf.
--> This can easily be the reason for the higher number of cars

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf.
--> Could be a valid reason for the higher number of cars as spare income if higher

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf.
--> Could be a valid reason for the higher number of cars

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf.
--> If this is true and still there are higher number of cars in BMWdorf, it could very well justify the fascination

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf.
--> Does not affect the argument

Read the symbol "🡲" as "leads to"

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf.
Lower Population 🡲 Lower Cars required V-Town; weakens

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf.
Lower Income 🡲 Lower Demand in V-Town 🡲 Lower Cars; weakens

C. Environment-related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf.
Strong Enforcement of Restriction 🡲 Lower Demand in V-Town 🡲 Lower Cars; weakens

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf.
A section of the total population could prefer an alternate mode of transport, which not cars 🡲 Lower Demand in V-Town 🡲 Lower Cars; weakens

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf.
Remaining Option Choice which is our Answer Also, better Public Transport in B-Town 🡲 Lower Demand for Cars in B-Town; does not weaken

ANSWER D

Conclusion: residents of the town BMWdorf are more fascinated with cars than those of the town Volkswagendorf
Premise: residents of the town BMWdorf buy more cars than the residents of the town Volkswagendorf

Basically, we want to identify 4 options that weaken the conclusion and 1 which does not weaken it

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf. This clearly weakens the argument. More people in BMWdorf so more cars are needed for maybe commute

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf. This clearly weakens the argument. maybe residents of BMWdorf have more money to spare

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf. This clearly weakens the argument. There are no restrictions on the number of cars so resident of BMWdorf keep buying cars

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf. THIS DOES NOT WEAKEN THE ARGUMENT

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf. Here this statement implies that its safe to ride bicycles in Volkswagendorf, but it's not safe to do the same in BMWdorf, hence residents of BMWdorf buy more cars

Residents of BMWdorf buy MORE CARS than residents of Volkswagendorf. We need to determine which of the 5 DO NOT WEAKEN the argument, so what we really need to see is which answer choice does not give us a reason to suggest that it's not the fascination of residents of BWMdorf which leads them to buy more cars, it is other factors which result in that statistic

Let us examine the answer choices.

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf.
Population of BMWdorf is higher that is why they buy more cars, not because they are more fascinated than residents of Volkswagendorf. ELIMINATE

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf.
Lower average income of residents of Volkswagendorf is the reason they buy less cars, not because residents of BMWdorf are more fascinated

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf.
Environment rules are more strictly enforced in Volkswagendorf, which is why they have less cars, not because residents of BMWdorf are more fascinated with cars. ELIMINATE

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf.
THIS! This does the opposite, it is actually in a way strengthening the argument. Public transport is cheaper in BMWdorf, still people buy more cars, it must be because they are fascinated by cars. ANSWER

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf.
It could be a tempting choice but truly it also weakens by stating that its unsafe for bicycle riders in BMWdorf which is why they end up buying more cars, and not because they are fascinated with cars. ELIMINATE

If population is high and car sales are also high in BMWdorf..that provides altenative explanation for more sales..Hence, weakens the argument..INCORRECT option

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf.
Reverse the statement..BMWdorf residents have a higher average income compared to that of Volkswagendorf..Hence, more fascination for residents of BMWdorf..clearly strengthens the conclusion of the argument..and doesn't weaken..CORRECT option

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf.
neutral to slightly positive tone for the argument's conclusion..Better option vis-a-vis this prompt is Option (B)..INCORRECT option

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf.
If public transport is cheaper and more convenient, it's a weakener for the argument's conclusion..INCORRECT option

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf.
BMWdorf doesn't have marked bicycle lanes..however, such statement provides neutral tone towards conclusion..Out of Scope..INCORRECT option

(B) is CORRECT option

A. The population of BMWdorf is higher than that of Volkswagendorf. Incorrect

weakens argument, higher number of cars because of high polulation

B. The residents of Volkswagendorf have a lower average income than those of BMWdorf. Incorrect

so, income is a reason not fascination about cars

C. Environment related rules restricting buying of personal vehicles are not as strictly implemented in BMWdorf as in Volkswagendorf. Incorrect

another reason for less number of cars in Volkswagendorf

D. Using public transport is cheaper and more convenient in BMWdorf than in Volkswagendorf. Correct

despite cheaper and more convenient public transport, BMWdorf residents buy more cars because of their fascination about cars; support argument

E. The roads of Volkswagendorf have marked bicycle lanes making it safer for bicycle riders there than in BMWdorf. Incorrect

another reason why Volkswagendorf residents buy less cars
