Re: A patient's stiff neck turned into severe pain, preventing him from ge [#permalink]
Which of the following most logically completes the argument?

(A) the patients who are correctly diagnosed with this test as not having a neck bone fracture invariably have medical conditions that are much less serious than a neck bone fracture If correctly diagnosed as not neck fract. and have some other problem, then those people shld be tested for other conditions. This compells the doctors to perform other tests. So, correct.

(B) every patient who is diagnosed with this test as having neck bone fractures has more than one of the symptoms generally associated with neck bone fractures

Doesnt matter, as surgery is already decided

(C) all of the patients who are diagnosed with this test as having neck bone fractures do, in fact, have neck bone fractures
doesnt mattr

(D) the misdiagnoses produced by this test are always instances of attributing neck bone fracture to someone who does not, in fact, have it
doesnt explain y we need other tests

(E) the only patients who are misdiagnosed using this test are patients who lack one or more of the symptoms that are generally associated with neck bone fractures
this also doeant explain y they need other tests.

Premise :
Neck fracture = paralytic => hence surgery.
25% of the surgeries are not necessary
New technique - 3 misdiagnosis wrt 100
from doctors can largely avoid unnecessary neck surgery without, however, performing any fewer necessary ones than before ==> 3 wrong diagnosis should not be ppl who need surgery

(A) the patients who are correctly diagnosed with this test as not having a neck bone fracture invariably have medical conditions that are much less serious than a neck bone fracture --> We need data on 3 misdiagnosis. Not correct

(B) every patient who is diagnosed with this test as having neck bone fractures has more than one of the symptoms generally associated with neck bone fractures --> We need data on 3 misdiagnosis. Not correct

(C) all of the patients who are diagnosed with this test as having neck bone fractures do, in fact, have neck bone fractures -->We need data on 3 misdiagnosis. Not correct

(D) the misdiagnoses produced by this test are always instances of attributing neck bone fracture to someone who does not, in fact, have it ---> This talks about misdiagnosis and tells us that these misdiagnosis are opposite. which means ppl who do not have Neck Bone fracture are misdiagnosed not the other way round. So we have 97% correctly diagnosed and 3% misdiagnosed have no Neck bone fracture. Perfect! Correct

(E) the only patients who are misdiagnosed using this test are patients who lack one or more of the symptoms that are generally associated with neck bone fractures ---> Though this talks about misdiagnosis, the reason does not provide us how new method will help. Not correct.

It should be D..if the 3 misdiagnoses are cases where critical patients might be skipped..then it is not a foolproof way of testing the patient and Doctors can't be cent percent sure

The sentence -> without, however, performing any fewer necessary ones than before; is really confusing. I interpreted it as the surgery rates remained at the same level as before the new technique. Anyone else feel the same?

97 % accurate detection of new machine.
Conclusion: The necessary surgeries wont fall>
Only if the misdiagnosed results will be misdiagnosed for those who don't have fractures and not needed for surgery. So the no of surgeries increase. And hence in most of the diagnosed cases with positive results for neck fracture do have neck fracture and need surgery. That means it almost accurately finds the positive cases.

Hence answer is D.
