Meanwhile.... MBA students demand tuition fee refunds over campus closures.

MBA students at some of the world’s leading business schools are demanding a refund on their tuition fees as compensation for campus closures and the switch to what they view as inferior online learning.

A petition circulating among students at The Wharton School, where fees alone for a two-year MBA degree can exceed $160,000, has received close to 900 signatures, equivalent to a single year’s intake.

At Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, where the two-year MBA programme costs $150,000 in fees, an online petition has been signed by the equivalent to 80 per cent of the class. Students have made similar demands at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and at Insead.

Update from INSEAD.

INSEAD has extended the application deadlines for the January 2021 intake.

Round 2: 06 May 2020 May 20th, 2020

Round 3: 24 June 2020 July 1st, 2020

Round 4: 28 July 2020 August 5th, 2020

Additionally, INSEAD is allowing at the moment to submit applications without a GMAT/GRE score until test centers reopen.

Does anyone have any idea about the one year Indian B schools? SPJIMR PGPM or IIMA PGPX OR IIMB EPGP?

Has there been any change in dates or any delay of deadlines? As far as I am aware SPJIMR PGPM has not changed their last deadline of July 31st but they haven’t replied to my messages.

Any update from other colleges? Would be much appreciated.

Update from NUS Singapore.

Postponement of The NUS MBA commencement to January 2021

In order to allow you sufficient time to make your arrangements with more certainty, and adjust your plans in the coming months, we have decided to move the start date of The NUS MBA to January 2021 for both full-time and part-time formats.

Extension of full-time and part-time application deadlines to 15 July 2020

In view of the challenges faced by many applicants during this time, we will continue to accept applications for both the full-time and part-time programmes until 15 July 2020. Your completed application and test scores will have to be submitted by then. Applications will continue to be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Emory (Goizueta Business School):

- Final round deadline has been extended to July 1 keeping in mind COVID-19 exigencies.

- International Students: There has been no delay as of now in the start time of the program. For students who are stuck for sometime either due to visa issues or travel bans, the remote learning option is given until they land in the US. However, probability is also there that even if you do come, the classes will be virtual and may be made physical ‘as soon as practical’.

- 1 Year MBA classes start dates might be pushed (as it is in May).

Stay Safe guys!

Emory is really one of the direct examples that trigger a legitimate question. Is it worth to pay that much to do an online MBA even you land the US? Everyone must weigh the pros against cons.

Wish all to be safe

COVID-19 Situation and its Impact on the Next Application Season

Hi all, one of our co-founders, Melody Jones, shared the following thoughts on the current environment and outlook for next year. Thought you may find helpful!

-Several factors are in play that will make this upcoming application cycle the most competitive in recent history. On the demand side, we expect to see an uptick in applications as the MBA is viewed as a safe place to ride out an economic downturn, which unfortunately, seems to be more and more inevitable. On the supply side, you have up to 20% (current estimates based on P&Q's survey) of the 2020 incoming class that is expected to defer to 2021 matriculation that will reduce the number of spots available in the top programs' classes. So what that means for applicants is that 1) differentiation matters more than ever and 2) they should cast a wide net in terms of school selection. While you still want to aim high, be realistic about how competitive it is and hedge your bets.

-I had been hesitant to give this advice, but I'm now more confident than ever: if you can pull together a strong application in the next ~2 months, I would recommend applying in the extended round 3/4 of this year. That said, you need to do your homework and understand what the schools are doing about online learning. The consensus is that the current solution of throwing the professor up on Zoom isn't working (it was a band aid). Schools need to redesign their curriculum for online learning in order to provide a robust experience that is more competitive with the in-person one. Since it's looking like the fall semester very well may take place online, applicants need to be prepared for that and OK with that but also understand what that experience will look like at the different schools so they're not surprised.

Stay safe everyone.

Yes!! Totally agree with you. I am the customer this time but I cannot ignore the fact that school costs will remain almost the same and they will have to really empty their own coffers for this. Professors won’t take cost cuts (and I won’t even want anybody to, to be honest). It is very tough to ask even (given I put myself in their shoes). But as an international student, I also want the schools to know that the experience on a zoom class, that also right in the beginning, will nowhere be able to justify the tuition we pay!! And it will be a compromised experience (which will force many to defer).

It is a very tough call and admits are reaching out to adcoms. As situations are very dynamic and nobody knows how this is going to pan out, I believe schools will try and suppress this as of now without commenting anything concrete.

I’ll keep it posted here if I get some concrete info for any schools.

Great info. To add to it, even this year admits are talking about tuition fee considerations if fall semesters are partially / or fully online.

Thanks for the perspective and thanks for chining in! Thinking about it, I don’t think schools costs are less if classes are online... but the bigger question will be the undergrad market and undergrad tuition. I feel that the undergrad decision will decide the MBA tuition date.

If there is a reduction, it will come out of school’s pockets or endowment... and Online MBA programs are probably standing to gain now since they are much better equipped to handle this corona mess....
