\(80 * \frac{5}{10} * \frac{80}{10} = 80 * \frac{40}{100}\)

therefore it is 40% off.

But in my understanding it is not 100% clear, whether the additional 20% are on the already discounted price or just added to the 50% which would make it 70% off.
Additional is, like the word implies, an addition. So 50%+20% = 70%...

Original list price = 80

Discount of 50% = 40
Additional 20% = 40*.8 = 32

% of original list price = 40%

$80 is just a redundant data here. If we calculate the successive %age, we'll get the answer.

First - 50% Second - 20%
\(50 + 20 - 50*20/100 = 60%\)
So, after 60% discount, the price will be 40%

I'm feeling a bit lost here :-

Assuming original list price 100,

100 -- --- after 50% off list price----> 50 ------ after 30% discount -----> 35 ------ after additional 20% off 'original' list price -------> 35 - 20 = 15

The way this question is worded is a bit misleading, since it uses to word "list price" in two different contexts. First, the 30%-50% discount is applied only to the list price. Secondly, the 20% summer special is also applied ONLY to the list price. Some people could argue that it isn't possible to apply both discounts, since applying the latter discount would no longer deem the new price as a "list price."

Dear bionication,

The initial discount is 50% of the list price which makes the new price $40. Since the second discount is on the list price, the 20% discount amounts to $16. So total discount is $56. Please note there is a percentage concept of successive discount, which, I believe, you are confusing with over here.

Dear Thoughtosphere

If we were to use your suggestion and calculate the lowest possible price ($80-$56=$24), the answer would be 30%, which is incorrect. This question DOES require sequential, successive percentage ($80x50% = $40 x 20% = 32; $32/80 = 40%), but is worded in a manner that does NOT implicate doing so.

Hope that clarifies my point! :-)

Considering later one answer comes out to be 30 % and for former case answer will be 40 %.
What I understood from the question is that original list price is $ 80, but then OA is 30 % , so where is the catch ?

already a regular sale is 30-50% given to buyers.and a ADDITIONAL sale of 20% is given as summer sale...
so additional is discount over that 30-50% discount

Since the question asks for lowest possible sale price, the discount % must be the highest.

Original discount = 50%
Additional discount = 20% of remaining 50% = 10%
Total discount = 60%

List price of the jersey = $80.

What percent of $80 is the lowest possible sale price? The lowest possible sale price = 40%(80) = $32.
So, 32/80 * 100 = 40%. Ans - D.

Initial cost of the jersey= 80 dollars
if the max discount is 50%, then .5(80)= $40
If we take an additional 20% off we get .2(40)=$8 --> $40-$8= $32

32/80 is equal to 40% so the correct answer is D.

Hi All,

This question is oddly worded, but the 'intent' of it is that second discount is supposed to be applied to the 'new' price (and not the 'original' price). In that way, this question is ultimately about step-by-step arithmetic.

Jersey Price = $80
Max 1st discount = 50%
Price after 1st discount = $80 - $80(.50) = $80 - $40 = $40

Additional discount = 20%
Price after 2nd discount = $40 - $40(.20) = $40 - $8 = $32

The lowest possible price, relative to the original price = 32/80 = 4/10 = 40%

Final Answer:

Lowest possible sale price = Maximum discount.

LP = List Price, SP = Sale Price.

LP = $80, typical SP = 50%($80) = $40. Summer SP = 80%($40) = $32.

So, the lowest possible SP is 32/80 * 100 = 40% of the list price. (D).

(To try to answer the question in your Head with few calculations)

Maximum discount:

(1st) 50% discount of $80

Take (1/2) away ———-> $40

(2nd) additional 20%

To calculate 10% of a number, move the decimal place one spot to the left ——-> $40 >>>> 10% of 40 = 4

20% is double that amount or ——- $8

$40 - $8 = 32


(3rd) 32 as a percent of original list price of 80

$32/$80 = 4/10 = 40/100

Or

40%
