Hi kittu,

thank you for sharing your profile. It definitely has a lot of potential.

To help you with your questions:

Q1. I am pretty high on work experience when compared to average. What are the biggest challenges for applying with high work ex?
The biggest challenge will be justifying the why NOW. Make sure you have a compelling story as to why you need NOW an MBA, and you didn't apply before.

Q2. Only looking for 1 year or about same duration programs. Are the target schools feasible?
Yes, your target schools are perfectly feasible. Given that you're only looking for 1-year programs and considering your years of experience, you could add IMD to your list. Average age is slightly higher (~31).

Q3. Is it worth trying for R3/R4 for 2018 session?
If you really hurry up, you can still apply on Round 1 (March 14th) or with more time on Round 2 (May 2nd) to INSEAD (Jan 2019 Intake).
You can also apply on Round 2 (April 1st) to IMD.

Thank you, and good luck!

Hi guys! Not sure if this is the right place to post. I am relatively new here. So please redirect me to the correct forum if it’s not this one.

I wrote the gmat 2 weeks ago and scored a 710
Break up: Q45(57 percentile) and V41 (94 percentile)

I am happy with the overal score. Wanted everyone’s thoughts on the quant bit though. Is it too low? I’ll give you more of my background below:

Indian Female, Age 25, Chartered Accountant (all levels in first attempt)

GPA: not too sure at the moment (have to check my documents), but above 7.87/10

College: not very well ranked, bachelor in business management, graduated in 2014, managed this while working full time for a big 4 (third year of the three year degree)

Work experience
1) 3 year articleship in a big 4 (tax)
2) 3 months full time post articleship in the same big 4
3) 1 year 3 months in the valuation team of another big 4
4) 7 months at a VC (ongoing, will finish 2 years by the time I intent to join bschool)

Total: 4-5 years depending on if articleship is counted or not

Extracurriculars
- teacher with teach for change (taught a group of underprivileged students and made sure they passed English Toefl level exams to better equip them for jobs)
- miracle manna (orphanage for children where I conducted activities)
- college: editorial team of college newspaper / newsletter
- recently started volunteering with make a wish foundation (hoping this will allow me to take on a more serious role)

Awards
- 1 award during articleship and finalist in 1 competition during articleship

Others
- been actively involved in a business separation legal case - from end to end
- this takes up most of my time outside work

Questions
1) is the quant score low considering I am Indian and I intend to major in finance and probably strategy? How do I make up for it?

(Note: I am not an engineer)

2) what schools seem realistic? Dream? Reach?

3) what’s the job situation in the US?

4) should I consider an MiM over an MBA

5) with the current Gmat score, what kind of scholarships and support can I expect?

6) planning to retake gmat - not very confident about scoring more than this score. Even if quant improves, verbal might drop. What are your thoughts on the score as it is? And in what situation should I accept or reject my next score?

HI,

You could post general queries in the Ask Admissions Consultants thread. Anyhow, I think a moderator is likely to move this query there.

To answer your questions:
1. a GMAT retake will help, especially if you are aiming for the top 15 MBA programs in the US.

2. It will be difficult to suggest b-schools to you with the little information you have provided here. Feel free to shoot me an email for a more indepth analysis of your profile and possibly a list of b-schools which you could further research.

3. The job situation in the US is pretty robust for most of the traditional post MBA industries. However, internationals fear the visa process and the chance that their visa may be rejected in the lottery system. That is a threat to anyone applying to the US colleges and you will just have to take that leap of faith.

4. MiM v/s MBA: this decision would largely depend on whether your target b-schools view your articleship as full time work experience or not. You'd be eligible for an MiM if your full time work experience is counted sans the articleship. My personal preference is to do the MBA with a little more work experience, as I believe it offers better return on your investment. However, if you wish to do an MFin to get specific finance skills, then its a different matter.

5. A scholarship depends on not just your GMAT score, but on the overall strength of your profile. so this question will be difficult to answer.

6. I'd say you strengthen the areas where you can improve the score and work towards a better score. V41 is a great score, and I hope you can maintain it :).

Hi RachitMDS,

thank you for sharing such a detailed profile.

You seem to have good accomplishments at work, but your career progression is not really clear to me. Make sure to paint a clear career progression in your application.

You have worked with international clients and vendors, but do you actually have international experience? Even if for a short-assignment (besides the training in Singapore). Have you traveled extensively in your personal life?

B-schools are looking for well-rounded applicants with interesting lives outside of work. Learning bachata and writing a novel are good extra-curriculars, but the AdCom will wonder how much of your time is devoted to them. I would recommend that in your application you put emphasis on other additional activities as well.

When articulating your career goals, do not mention two preferences. Instead, take your time and think about which one of the two is going to help you achieve your long-term goal (which by the way you have not mentioned), and only write about that one.

As you know, the Indian applicant pool is extremely competitive, so try to get a GMAT score which is at least 30 points above the school's average (i.e. +740).

But please keep in mind that a high GMAT score does not guarantee admission. Given the competitiveness of the Indian applicant pool, putting together a kick-ass application (i.e. resume, essays, LoRs...) is a must.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Re: LBS Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hello Admission Consultants,

I am working on my applications and LBS & INSEAD are my dream schools.
Could you tell me if I have a realistic chance? If not, which schools could I target?
And how could my story be done effectively?

GMAT - 720 - Q47, V33, IR-5
Indian Male
Chartered Accountant
Profile - Internal Audit
Age- 29

Workex - 72 months
20 Months - Very Large e-Commerce Company in India
10 Months - Large e-Commerce Company in Middle East
48 Months - Mid-sized start-up in India (startup focused on Health-Tech and Wearables)

-----

I have created significant impact in each of my companies including driving large fin-tech initiatives.
I have worked with C-Suite and investors. I led fund-raise during my stint in the health-tech start-up.

-----

Why MBA ?

Move into a focused Product / Senior Manager Fin-tech role in Europe which is the current center of innovation. In the LT, start my own P2P lending marketplace start-up

-----

Acads are average, nothing that stands out like IIT or any of that sort.

-----

I have noted from my interactions with a couple of admits that current and past pay is asked in the application forms.

What is the kind of average Pre-MBA salaries for Indians who do get accepted?

Re: LBS Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hello all
I am currently working as a technical head of youth development at a leading footballing school in India.
As of now, I have a work experience of 30 months.
I am preparing for my GMAT now.I graduated from Shiv Nadar University with a GPA of 7.02.
The scores for the 10-12 lie in the 90+% range.
Please do guide me in the process and help understand how the basics for MBA enrollment work. Also, how much of a role does diversity play in an enrollment process and similarly what scores should I be targeting to get into an MBA program at places such as LBS?

Thanks in advance
Nikhil

Background and nationality 31/M/White (US - NY, NY)

Undergrad Information: US Top 30 US News & World Report - Econ/Drama (3.8 GPA - Phi Beta Kappa)

GMAT: 700 44Q/41V/7IR (currently studying for a retake - goal of 720+ with 48+ Q)

Work experience and leadership: Currently working in the finance department for America's oldest professional theatre company and the largest theater owner on Broadway. Specifically, I work in the division that handles group and business-to-business discount ticket sales.

My current title is junior accountant. Primary responsibilities include:
-Own the entire aging process for ~50 b2b AR clients, totaling ~$1.1 million in monthly sales - coordinated with operations and sales department heads to develop a multidepartmental approach to dunning, reducing 90+ aged receivables by 80% on average for the past year.
-Manage and resolve any discrepancies related to commission income (~$150K/week) for all Broadway/off-Broadway ticket sales
-Reconcile internal reports against 3rd party ticketing system and advise accounting department regarding coding for ~$650K in weekly sales - coordinated with the operations manager to redesign the entire reconciliation process, reducing the time taken to get reports to accounting by two full business days.
-Established weekly reconciliation schedules for all manual credit card charges and A/R sales.

My title is lacking, but my recommendations will be able to speak to the stability I brought to my current position (the department was being restructured during my hiring)

Community and others:
Various service projects with NYC alumni group
Independently learning python for data science (put on hold due to GMAT retake)
Improv student
Beginner rock climber & active member of local recreational sports league
Won an acting award for my performance in a friend's submission to a playwriting festival
Academic interests in behavioral psychology/behavioral economics

Post MBA goals:
Insights/Analytics, ideally in the media/entertainment or tech industries. I want to blend my interests in behavior and decision sciences with my skills in storytelling to help guide businesses to better meet consumers needs.

Anything else?
Working with travel & tourism clients and living in such an international city, coupled with the flattening affect of the digital economy, has fueled my interest in potentially pursuing an MBA outside of the US. (On a personal note - I grew up in a small town down south and no one in my immediate family has ever traveled outside the country).
