A. plan difficult operations and to develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses in the same way that flight simulators do
B. plan difficult operations and develop programs to work for doctors and nurses the same way as with flight simulators
C. to plan difficult operations and to develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses like flight simulators
D. plan difficult operations and in developing programs to work for doctors and nurses the same way as flight simulators
E. to plan difficult operations and developing programs that will work for doctors and nurses like flight simulators do

Meaning :- Researchers are using computer images for 2 things
a. to help surgeons
b. to develop programs
Further these programs will work for doctors in the same way the flight simulators work for pilots.

Error Analysis :- No Error

POE :-
Option A :- Correct
Option B :- Changes the meaning of the sentence by stating that Surgeons plan difficult operations and develop programs for doctors. Also the comparison is incorrect
Option C :- The list is ambiguous, there can be 2 possible parallel lists, one :- the actual correct list, other :- surgeons to plan and to develop (same as option B). Also Like is used to compare nouns and for comparing clauses need an 'as', also need a verb after flight simulators
Option D :- The list plan and in developing is not parallel, also need a verb after flight simulators to have proper comparison
Option E :- Changes the intended meaning, this option states that Researchers are using images to do something and Researchers are developing programs. whereas the original option states that researchers are using images to do something and to develop something. Need 'as' for comparison not 'like'

IMO :- A

Here the two main verbs are HELP and DEVELOP. Parallelism should be maintained there only.

Consider the similar line "To make you go there".Here the main verb is MAKE.It doesn't make sense to use parallelism in GO.

i pick A. D and E are out for parallelism. C is out because LIKE never used in clause. in B, letting does not modify programs correctly. correct me if i am wrong

Option B is wrong as it is using 'develop' instead of 'To develop' which is parallel to 'to help'..
is this reasoning correct

A. plan difficult operations and to develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses in the same way that flight simulators do OK
B. plan difficult operations and develop programs to work for doctors and nurses the same way as with flight simulators Researchers are using computer images to develop programs, not the surgeons;"as with flight simulators do" is not grammatically correct.
C. to plan difficult operations and to develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses like flight simulators "to help surgeons to plan operations" <> to help surgeons plan.
D. plan difficult operations and in developing programs to work for doctors and nurses the same way as flight simulators "in developing" is not parallel with "to help"
E. to plan difficult operations and developing programs that will work for doctors and nurses like flight simulators do "developing" is parallel with "to help"; "like" cannot contain a verb

Splits:
to develop vs. develop vs. developing - sentence must be parallel logically and structurally, so infinitive is needed.
like...do vs. like vs. in the same way that - a verb is used or not used depending on the comparative clause indicator.

I was sure about answer choice A, but I was confused seeing 'in the same way THAT flight simulators do'. Is the use of 'That' legitimate here? I was expecting 'in the same way the flight simulators do'

It looks that 'A' is the best choice but use of 'that' seems to be odd. Can anyone explain?

I also got confused with use of "in the same way that flight simulators do".

I would have preferred "in the same way asflight simulators do". Can anybody explain if this usage of "that" is correct and other examples of such usage.

Looking for clarification from Experts.

Check parallelism + meanings [A] is the best answer

Nothing seems to be wrong with that and that as they modifies the preceding noun " programs" and "ways"

A. plan difficult operations and develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses in the same way that flight simulators do

Here, to develop parallel with to help . This conveys the right meaning as the researcher help surgeon and develop program.

B. plan difficult operations and develop programs to work for doctors and nurses the same way as with flight simulators

Here, develop parallel with plan > wrong meaning Surgeons do not develop program

C. to plan difficult operations and to develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses like flight simulators
Help + V. Therefore help to plan = wrong
This also conveys ambiguity in the meanings.

D. plan difficult operations and in developing programs to work for doctors and nurses the same way as flight simulators

in developing is not parallel to any verb

E. to plan difficult operations and developing programs that will work for doctors and nurses like flight simulators do

Again, developing is not parallel to any verb.

B. plan difficult operations and develop programs to work for doctors and nurses the same way as with flight simulators
C. to plan difficult operations and to develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses like flight simulators (improper use of like; flight simulators for pilots ('for pilots' seems like a defining prepositional phrase for flight simulators)
D. plan difficult operations and in developing programs to work for doctors and nurses the same way as flight simulators
E. to plan difficult operations and developing programs that will work for doctors and nurses like flight simulators do (developing is not parallel with either of the 'to+infinitive' forms to make any sense)

here the participle phrase "letting medical personnel practice their techniques and test their reflexes before they ever see a patient" conveys the result of a clause for which the subject is the "programs". This is one of the usages of comma + VERB-ing form

something like - programs will work for doctors and nurses . . . . , letting medical personnel. . . before they ever see a patient
only options A, C and E present 'programs' as a subject in the relative 'that' clause

In this option (C)- to help surgeons to plan difficult operations ..... there can be two parallelism entities

- First - Researchers are using computer images to help surgeons "to plan difficult operations and to develop programs..." - In this case it looks as if surgeons to develop programs - Not correct.

- Second - Researchers are computer images "to help surgeons ..& to develop programs ... "

Hope this helps.

I picked E on this one because I interpreted the meaning of the sentence to be that "researchers are using images to help the surgeons plans operations and are developing programs that will work for doctors/nurses like flight simulators do for pilots......"

why is this an incorrect interpretation of the meaning?
