A salesperson earns a weekly salary of $600 plus a commission of 1 percent of sales over $2,000. If he earned $650 in a certain week, what was the amount of his sales?

A. $620
B. $2,050
C. $3,000
D. $7,000
E. $22,000

We can create the following equation in which n = amount of sales:

650 = 600 + 0.01(n - 2000)

50 = 0.01n - 20

70 = 0.01n

7000 = n

Answer: D

If Sales is less than or equal to $ 2000
Weekly salary =$600

If Sales is more than $ 2000
Weekly Salary \(= $600 +\frac{1}{100}(Sales-$2000)\)

In Question stem , Weekly Salary is given as $650 , (>$600)
\($ 650 = $600+ \frac{1}{100}(Sales-$2000)\)
\($50=\frac{1}{100}(Sales-$2000)\)
\((Sales-$2000)=$50 * 100\)
\(Sales = $5000 +$ 2000 =$ 7000\)

A. $620
B. $2,050
C. $3,000
D. $7,000
E. $22,000

650 - 600 = 1 percent of sales over $2,000

So, 50 = 1 percent of sales over $2,000

Thus, 100 percent of sales over $2,000 = 5000

So, Total Sales is 5000 + 2000 = 7000, Answer must be (D)

Very easy calculation, I would argue though, that the wording is poor. In retrospect I should have noticed what the only logical answer could be, the test wanted (7000) but a commission of 1% of sales over 2000 is definitley ambigious. It could either mean what the test intended or that 2000 Dollar is the threshold, which has to be crossed by a sale to receive the commission aka. 1999 USd you receive no commission but from 2000 USd you receive 1 % on the full amount.

Totally agree to this!
