In a certain store, the price of five pens is equal to the price of a notebook. What is the cost of a ruler in this store?

(1) The cost of four pens and two notebooks is 10 dollars more than the cost of six rulers.
(2) The cost of seven notebooks is 25 dollars more than the cost of 15 rulers.

Let the prices of pens be p, notebooks be n and ruler be r.

given that 5p = 1n

We need to calculate r ?

Statement 1:

(1) The cost of four pens and two notebooks is 10 dollars more than the cost of six rulers.

4p + 2n = 10 + 6r

4p + 2*(5p) =10+6r

14p = 10+ 6r

14p - 6r =10

7p - 3r = 5 . Hence, NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2:

(2) The cost of seven notebooks is 25 dollars more than the cost of 15 rulers.

7n = 25+ 15r

7*(5p) = 25+ 15r

35p - 15r = 25

7p - 3r = 5 . Hence, NOT SUFFICIENT .

Since, Both statements have given us the same equation. No solution exists.

Hence , Option E

E is the answer

Pen price= x
Notebook price=5x
Ruler price=y

Option I
4x+10x=6y+10

Option I not sufficient

Option II
35x=15y+25
Option II not sufficient

Thus E is the answer.
