Two cars started from the same point and traveled on a straight course in opposite directions for exactly 2 hours, at which time they were 208 miles apart. If one car traveled, on average, 8 miles per hour faster than the other car, what was the average speed of faster car for the 2-hour trip?

A. 32 mph
B. 40 mph
C. 48 mph
D. 56 mph
E. 64 mph

speed of A = x
speed of B = x+8
distance travelled in 2 hrs
2x+2x+16=208
4x=192
x=48
speed of B; 48+8;56

CAR 2................................O......................................CAR 1
<....................................208....................................>
D 208 - D
S1 S2=S1+8

S2 = S1+8
(208 - D)/2 = D/2 + 8
=> (208 - D)/2 - D/2 = 8
=> (208 - 2D)/2 = 8
=> 208 - 2D = 16
=>2D = 192
=> D = 96

S1= 96/2 = 48 MILE/HOUR
S2 = 56 MILE/HOUR

D. 56 mph

Let the speed of one car is \(s\) miles per hour

So, the speed of the faster car is \(s+8\)

\(2s+2(s+8)=208\)

\(2s+2s+16=208\)

\(4s=192\)

\(s=48\)

The speed of the faster car is \(48+8=56\)

The answer is D

B. 40 mph
C. 48 mph
D. 56 mph
E. 64 mph

Solution:

We can let x = the average speed, in mph, of the faster car. Thus, x - 8 = the average speed of the slower car, and we can create the equation:

2(x + x - 8) = 208

2x - 8 = 104

2x = 112

x = 56

Given
    • Two cars started from the same point and traveled on a straight course in opposite directions for exactly 2 hours, at which time they were 208 miles apart.
    • One car traveled, on average, 8 miles per hour faster than the other car.

To Find

    • The average speed of the faster car for the 2-hour trip.

Approach and Working Out

    • Faster car speed = x mph, slower car = (x – 8) mph.

    • 2(x + x – 8) = 208
      o 4x = 208 + 16
      o 4x = 224
      o x = 56
