40% of Area of the floor = 4*9 square feet = 36 square feet

i.e. 100% Area of Floor = (36/40)*100 = 90 square feet

Answer: Option E

40% of the total area = 9X4 = 36, so total area = 100*36/40 = 90.

40 percent of Andrea's living room floor is covered by a carpet that is 4 feet by 9 feet. What is the area of her living room floor?

Solution -

Area of Carpet - 4*9 =36 is 40% of total area Y.

36 = (40/100)*Y ----> Y = 90

\(\frac{2}{5}\) = \(\frac{4*9}{x}\)
\(x = \frac{180}{2} = 90\)

For a second I thought it was a trick question. Looking at the answer choices, only E fit the problem.
A. 14.4 If the rug is 40%, the area of the floor must be atleast the area of the carpet.
B. 180/7 Same as above. The 180 is a trick.
D. 50.4 Trap answer. ~5/8 of floor <> 3/5 of floor. Perhaps the answer choices 54 would throw more test takers off.
C. 60 Trap answer
E. 90 Valid

First Calculate the Area covered by carpet: 4*9=36
These 36 square feet account for 40%
36/4*10 = 90 square feet = 100%

4*9 = (40/100 )* x

so x = 4*9*100/40 = 90

E is correct

total Area=90 sq feet

40% of Area of the floor = 4*9 square feet = 36 square feet

i.e. Area of Floor = (36/40)*100 = 90 square feet

MANHATTAN GMAT OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

The area of the carpet is equal to l*w, or 36 ft^2. Set up a proportion to find the area of the whole living room floor:

40/100 = 36/x
x = 90 ft^2.

Answer: E.
