driege: I actually received feedback from Jessica Seymour pertaining fit issues - ad com wanted anecdotes of me playing support roles in my update letter. So I do believe Jessica is willing to provide feedback if there is any. But truth of the matter is, most people on the waitlist, are waitlisted simply because ad com is waiting for the class to shape out. So most of the time, there's no glaring reservation with waitlisted candidates hence there's really nothing much they could say.

I wonder what's better: having one small issue that you can fix or not having anything you can do to change their perception.

If you have an issue and you fix it, you become more eligible. If you have no issue and still provide some updates you become more eligible also. Overall it does not increase or decrease your chances.

What I have heard is it depends on your profile. Even if 2-3 seats open up they look at what profile folks did not accept admission and they try to admit students with matching profiles to balance the class.

Hi MBAUncle,

I called admission office, found out the direct contact of my WL Manager Jessica Seymour. I left a voicemail, and a day later she emailed me back to schedule a 10 min call.

From other people's responses, it sounds like who you have as waitlist manager makes a diff w.r.t. responsiveness. My WL manager was responsive and helpful.

How many voicemails / emails have you left?

Hello elsychung,

I also called the adcom and got my WLM contacts. During the course of two weeks I have left two voice mails and sent two emails with no return. I called other times as well. Obviously I don't want to be seem as inconvinient by leaving messages and emails everyday.

However this is driving me nuts because K is my first option but I need to decide soon what I will do for life ! I received a job offer to work abroad from one of my recommenders, a very good career opportunity not only because he knows of my MBA plans and would agree to hire me just for a year But because I would assume higher responsability and get a higher salary. However, I need to define my position soon to start the hiring process and eventually start a reapplication effort for the next Round 1.

Oh well, I have been stressed with this app life for almost a year..... :-(

If you are planning to re-apply, your best chance might be to be patient and hang in there. If they offer you summer waitlist, take that also and see where it goes. Best case you might get in this year or it will increase your chances of getting readmitted if you re-apply, the longer you hang in there. Unless you hang in there to the end, which shows commitment to the school, getting waitlisted the previous year does not increase or decrease your chances next year as they will evaluate you against the new applications.

Sounds like you have some deliberation to make over the next little while.

I think there were some articles posted on waitlist strategies. One of which is to review your essays and see if there are weaknesses that you could address in your update letter. It is subjective, and I'm not sure how sending update letters when you have no real updates would weigh against the 'not pestering' rule.

I sent in my stuff, didnt receive a confirmation, but I left it at that.

We should see more movement in May. However, if you're being offered a job with higher pay and better title, that could constitute as a job movement too and I think you ought to send that in and communicate that the firm's waiting on you to make the decision.

But I'm no expert. Ultimately, you're your own waitlist strategist. Good luck! Cliche, but we could all use a little bit of it right now.

MBAUncle, I was able to get feedback from my WL manager a few weeks ago. I called the admissions office first and they gave me the direct line and email for my WL manager. I called and left a voicemail, and then followed it up with an email a day later after I didn't get a response. My WL manager emailed me back asking to schedule some time for a call. We spoke for about 10 minutes and she gave me some good feedback.

What was your feedback? My WL manager said she looked at my app and there were no causes for concern, but that it was just a numbers thing. I wonder if that's true or if some managers are just more willing to give out details. FYI - I spoke with Jessica Seymour.

I also spoke with Jessica Seymour. Her response was that in my situation, it was a combination of waiting to see how the class was going to fill out, and needing some additional information. They wanted me to explain a little more in detail about why I need an MBA to get where I want to go.

Anyone done any analysis of last year as to whether there is any significant waitlist movement in May? Or should we view the WL as a summer long limbo?

There were some dings leading upto May 10 and around may 10-12 people who got selected were notified, rest of them were kept on summer waitlist. This information is from following 2010 waitlist.

Ah, so if the 2010 WL numbers were anything like this year, we're talking about a fairly small fraction of the WL'ers who saw any action in May.
Running out of time to be making decisions about my future...

Also this year, the schools have admitted students aggressively anticipating a drop in applications due to better job prospects in the industry. There might be very less movement this year. Or if lot some of the admitted students get promoted or get better job offers they might reject their mba admits.

When I spoke with Tuck, the coordinator told me they are not even looking at round 3 applications forget wait lists. With wait lists I am sure everyone is on the border line, if someone has real "significant" updates or better than that an offer from other competing school, that might push them over the hurdle. Otherwise it is a real wait until some seats really opens up.

Perhaps you know more than I do, but I don't see how competing offers (surely most people on Kellogg's WL got into other schools too, and some of them with some $) or significant updates help. Isn't it almost exclusively about who does and doesn't accept the offer of admission?

This is all unsubstantiated postulation. Granted I'm still optimistic and I'd like the believe that I have a shot, but nonetheless there is no merit to the above claim. Not to mention that every school is different. UCLA for example sent out emails encouraging R3 applicants.

End of the day no one knows anything so need to spread rumors. We will all find out next week. Until then let's just hope for the best.

First order they try to balance profiles, second order they look at why person X versus person Y in the same profile . Competing offers definately boosts your chances as more than one school thinks you are recruitable after your MBA. Since 2008 MBA applications have become about employment figures and showing a higher number of recruits on graduation. Booth and Tuck went up the ranking just based on few fractional improvement in employment numbers.
Significant updates help if there was genuine weakness in your application, like less experience or weak GMAT or some behavioral issue. If you say you got promoted in your company, there is no way for them to verify that unless you provide a recommendation.
UCLA is really struggling with attracting quality applications as its ranking is going down.

Again these are just my thoughts

As further proof that the above claim is unsubstantiated. Quote from recent HBS email about its wait list.

"We expect that there will be spaces in the class that will need to be filled, but at this time I cannot accurately indicate to you how many."
