I think it should be A, because
conclusion: Nerve repair would be a standard procedure
OptionA: Prevention of the regeneration of damaged nerves is merely a by-product of the main function in the human body of the substances inhibiting nerve growth.
This implies that there are many fiunctions of this substance apart from inhibitiion....So every time there is a procedure doctors should take care that other functions should not get affected and hence doctors cannot do the same thing for every patient evrytime. It will depend from patient to patient.

IMO A.

A says that new discovery is wrong. Hence no surety on probable effects.

A is correct.

(A) Prevention of the regeneration of damaged nerves is merely a by-product of the main function in the human body of the substances inhibiting nerve growth. --The antibodies that deactivate the inhibitors only solve half the problem here.

Definitely, A.


(B) Certain nerve-growth stimulants have similar chemical structures to those of the antibodies against nerve-growth inhibitors. Not valid. This means that growth stimulants are antibodies. I don`t like the word "certain".
(C) Nerves in the brain are similar to nerves in the spinal cord in their inability to regenerate themselves naturally. - Not valid. We don`t care about nerves in the brain, we are talking about nerves in the cord
(D) Researchers have been able to stimulate the growth of nerves not located in the spinal cord by using only nerve-growth stimulants. Not valid. It doesnt`t correct to talk about other locations - there could be another types of nerves.
(E) Deactivating the substances inhibiting nerve growth for an extended period would require a steady supply of antibodies. So what??? Ok, let it be... We are talking about possibility, but not time period. So, irrelevant.

Actually, B, a bit confusing. It looks like a correct variant. But it is not.

you not able to get the stimulus or no answer choice made sense? Whats the guess? In difficult CR evaluate A, D and E first.

I interpreted the steam as giving evidence that a specific nerve could be regenerated and then making a broad assertion that nerve cell regeneration would become standard. To weaken the argument you would have to weaken the connection between the specific evidence and general conclusion.

I chose B. But I can see why A is the correct answer. B just sounds good but this answer choice has no tie to the conclusion.

clearly A: the substance that prevent nerve growth is by product of that substance , so that substance have some other function too, so if new antibody deactivate that substance then there are chances that other body function will affect.

Couldn't grasp nor paraphrase the meaning of A either.
English's not my main language to a "by-product" was little hard to understand. And all the "of the" "of the" had me confused.
So now, if I understand correctly,
Prevention of the regeneration of damaged nerves is merely a by-product of the main function in the human body of the substances inhibiting nerve growth.

= inhibiting regeneration of nerves is only one of the things the antibodies do.

A is a clean shot here.Since, the argument does not have a reasoning gap a defender answer choice or a third party element has to be brought in.

A does exactly the same stating the functionality.

standard procedure is being discussed here. if there are effects of the main product they may be undesirable . hence A is somewhat correct.

This was a tough question for me. I was hesitating between A and B and eventually chose B. I had a tough time understanding what A was trying to say (fairly unclear in my opinion). The way I interpreted B was that the antibodies would also potentially block the nerve growth stimulants. If the nerve growth stimulants are also being blocked than the nerves won't necessarily grow back and cast the most doubt on the conclusion that it will become a standard procedure.

Reading through the comments I understand why A is an acceptable option, but I would still have had significant trouble with this question.

So for this weaken Q ... I got A

(A) Prevention of the regeneration of damaged nerves is merely a by-product of the main function in the human body of the substances inhibiting nerve growth. -- if prescribed concluded solution, it could mess with other body function
(B) Certain nerve-growth stimulants have similar chemical structures to those of the antibodies against nerve-growth inhibitors. -- irrelevant
(C) Nerves in the brain are similar to nerves in the spinal cord in their inability to regenerate themselves naturally. -- irrelevant, no mention of brain in question
(D) Researchers have been able to stimulate the growth of nerves not located in the spinal cord by using only nerve-growth stimulants. -- does not weaken
(E) Deactivating the substances inhibiting nerve growth for an extended period would require a steady supply of antibodies. -- nothing in question that says steady supply would be a problem

I chose B and got this question wrong.
However, after review I think the answer is straight A.

Premise 1: Damaged nerves do not regenerate themselves naturally.
Premise 2: The reason is the presence of nerve-growth inhibitors.
Premise 3: Antibodies that deactivate those inhibitors have been developed.
Conclusion: Nerve repair will be a standard medical procedure in the foreseeable future.

Assumption: nerve-growth inhibitors are main factors that prevent damaged nerves' regeneration.

To weaken this assumption, we have to demonstrate those inhibitors are not the main factors, in fact, they are just by-products of the main function in the human body of the substances inhibiting nerve growth. So does that make any sense to attack the by-products. Nope!.

B is incorrect. Please see the first sentence: "Damaged nerves in the spinal cord do not regenerate themselves naturally, nor even under the spur of nerve-growth stimulants". It clearly says nerve-growth stimulants do not help to regenerate damaged nerves.

But how does it matter if it's main function of the inhibitors or not?
As antibodies are going to deactivate them anyway and the premise clearly points out that inhibitors are the reason why regeneration is affected.

I can't understand why it's A. Anyways, what's the source?

Hi Leo.
The 2nd sentence states that: "The reason, recently discovered, is the presence of nerve-growth inhibitors in the spinal cord". It doesn't say nerve-growth inhibitors are main/only factors that inhibit the damaged nerve's regeneration. "Presence" probably means there are more than one factors could stop the regeneration. Antibodies deactivate just those inhibitors, not others. So we cannot simply conclude these antibodies help to repair damaged-nerves. Hope it helps.

what is the problem with option D..
if..
Researchers have been able to stimulate the growth of nerves not located in the spinal cord
by using "only" nerve-growth stimulants.(means they cannot do without that) so as a result..nerve repair cannot be a standard medical procedure as they ought to use nerve growth stimulants and hence the arg falls apart..

kindly explain.

SUBJECT OF ARGUMENT - Damaged nerves in the spinal cord -
DOES NOT HAPPEN - BY THEM-SELF OR BY SPUR OF NEVER GROWTH STIMULANT.
HAPPENS - is the presence of nerve-growth inhibitors(RESTRICTING) in the spinal cord.
SOLUTION -Antibodies that DEACTIVATE those inhibitors have now been developed.
CONCLUSION - nerve repair will be a standard medical procedure in the foreseeable future.

SO if damaged on NERVES happens because of restricted nerve growth - so what could be its treatment?
to activate nerve growth or stimulate nerve growth.
OPTION A- clearly mention's- PREVENTION OF the regeneration of damaged nerves is merely a by-product of the main function in the human body of the substances inhibiting nerve growth.

So if damaged nerve are prevented to activate/function properly/nerve growth stimulate - than how can be patient treated or DAMAGED NERVES CAN BE TREATED, Therefore - OPTION IS A IS WEAKENING THE CONCLUSION
