During a 40 mile trip, mara travelled at an ave speed of x miles/hr for the first y miles and at an average speed of 1.25 miles/hr for the last 40-y miles of the trip. The time that mara took to travel the 40 miles was what percent of the time it would have taken her if she had travelled at an ave speed of x miles/hr for the entire trip?

(1) x = 48
(2) y = 20

C for me.

I got (1.25y + 40x - xy)/40*1.25.

so obviously I need both x and y.

The time that mara took to travel the 40 miles was what percent of the time it would have taken her if she had travelled at an ave speed of x miles/hr for the entire trip?

1. x = 48
2. y = 20

total time = y/x (1st half) + (40-y)/1.25 (2nd half)= (1.25y+40-y)/1.25x

time at x miles = 40/x

% (0.25y+40)/1.25x devided by 40/x
= (0.25y+40)*x/(40*1.25x)

x xancels out
need only Y

Actually this one should be (1.25y + 40x - xy)/1.25x

C here as well.

The question is not transcribed correctly . The speed for the (40-y) distance is 1.25x and not just 1.25mph. I spent quiet sometime on the above doubts too.
Request the moderator to edit the question to prevent further users from wasting time in figuring this out.
