If x(x - 5)(x + 2) = 0, is x negative?

(1) x^2 – 7x 0
(2) x^2 –2x –15 0

We definitely need to bold or make larger the not equals symbol in the question. From a distance it looks like an equals symbol.

Either X = 0 OR X = 5 OR X = -2 . Is X = -2?

1. X cannot be 0 or 7 ==> X can be 5 or -2. NS
2. X cannot be 5 or -3 ==> X can be 0 or -2. NS

1&2. X cannot be 0 or 5 so X = -2, Sufficient.

ANSWER: C

I did silly mistake in factorising - (2) "x^2 –2x –15 ≠ 0" - marked B

If x(x - 5)(x + 2) = 0, is x negative?

(1) x^2 – 7x ≠ 0
(2) x^2 –2x –15 ≠ 0

(1) \(x(x-7) ≠ 0\)

x ≠ 0, 7

INSUFFICIENT.

(2) \(x^2-2x-15≠0\)
x ≠ 5, -3

INSUFFICIENT.

(1&2) We're told \(x(x - 5)(x + 2) = 0\)
x ≠ 5, 0. Therefore x must be -2. SUFFICIENT.

Answer is C.
