Alittle bit more about my gap year
I was born in a small and underdeveloped village in the middle of Vietnam where people lack of access to English. So 2 years ago most of my English skills achived though self-study.Back then I was able to conduct a decent conversation but my Academic English wasnot so good. After done lots of research about MBA and realized that ahigh score in GMAT is needed to be admitted at Top B school, I decided to quit my job to study full time English. Also to best use time off work, i decided to study full time Mandarin which can be beneficial in my career path so i signed up for full time Mandarin course at a University in China. My original plan was to study in parallel English and Mandarin in 2 years but because of Covid , after 5 months full time study Mandarin, school closed and I started study online since then.
My husband and I plan to settle down in North US and My undergraduate degree is from a B-school in Vietnam, which i realize will be very hard for me to find a job in Finance field in US. My near future goals is landed at a financial analyst job to get more experience and after about 5 years will search for manager position in same field

B-schools find value in students who are self aware, and ready to work hard in order to improve/ achieve their goals. along with this, they also look for certain qualities among applicants- career progression, leadership and achievements. You should tell your story well in the applications, reflecting these qualities. The Ross admissions team is very willing to hear your stories and you can use their short essays plus the optional essay to explain your challenges and your commitment towards your objectives.

Hope that makes sense to you - while my advice may come across as general, I have thought every word before writing it here. :)

I really appreciate your help
Yes it is kinda general but all true. I am working on retake GMAT and also writing my essays
Once again, many thanks

Hi Dvaishnav,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Well, your undergrad GPA is good, and you have a good GMAT score. On the work front, you have 14 years of experience, which will help you to share amazing stories of leadership and impact. Furthermore, the fact that you have led cross-functional teams demonstrates that you are well-versed in several sectors of business. So, attempt to include all of these into your application. Ross looks for 'Impact' in one's profile. Make sure to include stories from both your personal and professional experiences in your application to demonstrate self-awareness.

Your post-MBA goals are aligned with your previous work experience. You have vast work experience, and now adcoms want you to know what you want to do once you get your MBA. Try to divide them into short-term and long-term goals. Although you may not be expressly asked to do so, it is worth considering how you can connect your goals to your prior experience and successes. You may want to read an article on how to frame practical post-MBA goals essays, you will get some insights to communicate the convincing case to the adcoms.

Your ECs are missing. ECs play a critical role in giving apps a lively personality. So, I would like to know about your interests and hobbies, as well as any community involvement. Just look around and see what you can speak about beyond your work. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to Ross. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

How to enhance your application and maximize your chances for fall intake

Hi animesh96,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is good, and I suggest you aim for 730+ GMAT to maximize your chances. On the work front, I can see a good career trajectory. 2 promotions in 3.5yrs and now 1 in the pipeline at JP Morgan, Great! You can share how you perform better than your peers, which leads to a promotion. This will show you as a high-performing individual. You can discuss the projects you worked on and the influence they had on the organization. Your work displays a broad range of experience and understanding across a wide range of tasks. I think you have wonderful stories to tell. Social work will assist you in demonstrating your ability to be a "collaborative leader." Your post-MBA goals make sense, but you must explain them properly to the adcoms. You will need to make a convincing case to the adcoms.

Ross seeks to find the following qualities in MBA applicants:

1) Self-awareness
2) Teamwork
3) Impact
4) Academics

While creating your application, keep in mind relevant examples to exemplify the points mentioned above. Your ECs are missing, and I'd like to know about them. Also, the different schools you are targeting. Overall, a good profile with a chance at Ross. Ross is continuing the GMAT waiver. You might want to read an article about Ross mba GMAT waiver, to gain insight into important aspects of the GMAT waiver MBA program process and enhance your GMAT waiver MBA application. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to Ross. Re: Ross Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hi I would like to know, for PhD is the procedure same. I am applying for a PhD at Ross. Can you guys help me with the Essays. I have finished B Tech in Aerospace Engg. with GPA 3.97/4.0. Currently pursuing MA in Diplomacy,Law and Business in 3rd semester, with cumulative A+ letter grade.
I have worked in diverse fields, first as an analyst in a start-up. My role was map the decisions taken by my organization and allocate funds towards CSR activities for various initiatives like Local Canine Shelter, Old Age Home (a nursing home for senior citizens

Next I worked in Indigo Airlines as an Airport Operations Specialist. I even interacted with passengers, which helped to become more confident in managing good relations and be comfortable in pressurizing situations like when they miss their flights. It was essential to be pleasing always. My role involved being a bride of communication between the airline ground staff, the airport operator and commander of the flight. Over radio I had to communicate used to decide on the bay number (parking slot for the aircraft), arrange coaches for deplaning and embarking the passengers, intimate the ground support equipment (GSE) team, ensure quick turnaround time. I was recognized by my team for my contribution and was awarded special mementos and had a great working relationship with the manager, who pushed to me to set bigger goals. This made me realize it was time for me to set off in a new trajectory. As I was able to stand out, I decided to make another smooth transition to reach a higher stage in the professional sphere.

Later I joined a Fortune 500 company Cognizant Technology System as Senior Process Executive. My role was to manage social media marketing of giants like Amazon and LinkedIn. It was interesting time and great part was going for luncheons.

After nearly 4 years in Corporate sector, I wanted to continue my higher education and was motivated by my colleagues as they must of observed something in me. I am rather grateful to them. I have had the opportunity to be a mentor for sophomores and was a Teaching Assistant in my under-graduation.

I always harbored a wish to be among students. I believe in the motto "Keep things simple" and "Work Hard and Play Hard" . After dabbling a lot in the early phase of my career. I am thankful that my decisions have always worked.

Hopefully I settled on the idea to join the academia as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in a leading university. Having a cross-functional experience I made a conscious choice of following my passion.

I have lived widely in Bhutan, Sri Lanka and ofcourse in India. This has given me an international exposure and closely observe how the system works in various geographies. Having lived abroad I have learnt to appreciate the smaller things in life which we often take for granted.

Hi mittalbwoy,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is quite good, and you have a good GMAT score. If you are able to score 750+, your chances will be maximized (higher the better). So, this part is pretty sorted for you.

Ross seeks to find the following qualities in MBA applicants:

1) Self-awareness
2) Teamwork
3) Impact
4) Academics

I can see a mix of 2,3 and 4 in your profile. Now, talking about your work experience, it does seem good on the surface with names like Deloitte in your CV. You are a risk adviser, which must suggest that you have strong analytical skills, strategic thinking, and problem-solving abilities. To demonstrate your potential, you will need to incorporate all of these elements within your apps. Working with various clients at Deloitte has also enhanced your global awareness. Demonstrating this in an impactful way will give your profile a global outlook. You may want to read an article on how you can distinguish yourself in mba application essays, this will give you some insights to craft your story :)

Your ECs seem amazing. They strongly point out the presence of leadership qualities in you. Speaking about all these with the right passion will bring diversity to your apps, and adcoms will get to know different aspects of your personality. Along with this, your hobbies and interest will add spark to your profile.

Your post-mba goals do make sense. Just a quick piece of advice, try to divide them into long-term and short-term goals. Although you may not be specifically asked to do so, it is worthwhile to consider how you may connect your goals to your prior experience and successes. So, think of the short-term and long-term goals carefully. This will make the story more orderly, logical, and concise, something the admissions committee will undoubtedly appreciate. Overall, if you are able to bring an amazing story, I feel you have a good shot at Ross. You can also look for NYU, MIT, and Kellog. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to the schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

EA: Planning to take the executive assessment since I will have 8 years of work ex by matriculation. Currently around the 150-155 range in the official practice tests
Work Experience: 8 years in the automotive and tech industries. Currently head of analytics in HR at a series D unicorn startup. I lead a team of data scientists and am building the people analytics function from the ground up
Sponsorship: 100% company sponsored
LOR: My current manager. I worked with her at a previous company and she asked me to join her here so we have a great relationship.
Extracurriculars: Started my own people analytics consortium, part of the leadership committee for the south asian ERG at work, volunteer with impoverished children in India and work with school kids from under-resourced areas near me. I also do a lot of DEI work as a part of my job, building processes to analyze and ensure equity across the employee lifecycle
Motivation for getting an MBA: I want to be able to connect our people data back to the business objectives. HR tends to be in the support function objectives grouped with a lot of other items, but I believe that people data and analytics should underlay all of our business objectives. In order to do this effectively, I need to be able to understand and speak the languages of the different functions.

Hello lokpre,

Thanks for writing in. You must definitely apply to the Weekend MBA as your profile is much closer to the class profile of the same. Overall, you have great profile and so a lot really depends on how well you portray the same through your essays.

Should you need any help in this regard, please feel free to reach out.

All the best!

Hi All,

Need help to review my profile

Female, Indonesian, Process Improvement & Internal Audit Manager, 27 y.o

Academics:

Undergrad in Top 1 national university, Computer Science, GPA 3.45. I'm planning to apply using gmat waiver due to my quant undergrad, got a 710 on simulation, but I haven't taken the test yet.

Work Ex:
Almost 1 year at a leading local OOH and digital advertisement company, summary:
- Designed business processes & procedures for all departments
- Led automation project for several departments, reducing cost and processing time
- Led CRM system implementation, with manageable risks, saving 20% budget
- Implemented standardized career development for all departments for process consistency
- Collaborated with business development to establish a major new business opportunity in partnership with a big company, may cause +40% revenue based on projection

4+ years at Accenture, handling process improvement and bridging business with technology projects for several big companies (mainly energy & professional service), summary:
- Analyzed, designed, and implemented process improvement in Operation & Engineering dept
- Created standardized automated financial reports, reducing monthly and yearly closing processing time
- Developed data analysis tool to improve productivity and performance of assets
- Developed and implemented change management strategy for digital transformation project
- Designed data integration for several systems to create automated production managerial report

Extracurricular and community service experience:
1. Led a volunteer team in volcanic eruption refugee camps for 2 months
2. Co-found and led marketing for uni's tv startup
3. Taught leadership and technology skills for middle school girls
4. Led Accenture Technology's newsletter team

Interests and hobbies: Digital transformation, operational excellence, traveling, taekwondo (used to participate in several regional competitions, only got silver medals though, so I don't think it's worth mentioning), badminton

Post MBA Career Goals: digital consultant at MBB or product manager at big tech companies

What are my chances at Ross? What other top schools do I have a realistic shot at?
Oh, I also plan to apply to Tepper because they are actually good at Tech and Operation.

Thanks!

You have a nice profile hijules29. your work experience around process improvement sounds relevant for a role as a consultant.

I assume that you are planning to apply this coming year in the 2022 application cycle. Would recommend you take the GMAT- firstly, it will help you in case b-schools decide to bring the test back as a compulsory feature. Secondly, it will open up your choice to other MBA programs which d not give a waiver.

Your experience at the refugee camp sounds very different and interesting- i hope it offered you a lot of learning and personal development and is something that you can talk about in your application.

Tepper and Ross are both excellent programs. You could add others such as UCLA, Darden and Duke to your target programs

Q: What are my chances at Ross?

A: I would say solid. It feels like a very appropriate school for you given your well-rounded profile. I agree with the previous post that taking the GMAT (especially if you're scoring around a 710) would be a great idea. You never know if you may need it or if it could help with potential scholarship money.

Q: What other top schools do I have a realistic shot at? Oh, I also plan to apply to Tepper because they are actually good at Tech and Operation.

A: I would also take a look at Berkeley Haas, Cornell Johnson, Duke Fuqua, NYU Stern, and UCLA Anderson.

Lastly, stay away from MBB for a post-MBA goal in your essays. It's overplayed.

Hello hijules29,

Thanks for writing in.

We feel you have a strong profile. However, we would recommend that you take the GMAT and then apply. Tepper, too, is a fine choice. You could also look at the other US schools such as Duke, Kenan Flagler, and McCombs.

Good luck!
