Re: Johnson Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hi GettingmyMBA

Most aspects look pretty balanced. Let's go one by one.
Academics- past scores are okay, but GMAT checks the box. PGP in entrepreneurship gives some diversity.
Work experience- stand out feature of your profile. I can already see many potential stories that can show measurable impact. The narrative will also be impressive and show growth moving from one achievement to another.
Diversity- while an Indian male, yet, your work experience will add brownie points to diversity. Extracurricular are a cherry on the top. I'd touch upon the more recent activities and less on the school ones as they may not add much weight unless there's something stellar (not sure what sort of awards are we taking about). Might want to pick and choose just a few extracurricular.
Career goals- this is the trickiest part in your profile. While the strategy role might be organic considering your past experiences a big question that comes up is why MBA. Moving from one successful venture to the other, why do you think an MBA is the most logical next step. Also the long term goal of entrepreneurship looks reachable even today with your history. Additionally you have a PGP in the same subject so what gaps are you looking to fill that only a full time MBA can provide.

To conclude your work history definitely gives you an edge, if you can present it well and portray a genuine need of an MBA, you have a decent shot.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Thanks a lot for your quick and detailed response MBAkarma

What I am most concerned about is, how do B-Schools establish credibility? Because, most of the things I have done on the work ex side is myself doing the work and taking charge. So I do not have managers speaking for me, or newspaper articles/ PR giving proof of work.

2 things a) Is it sufficient, that I speak about it and know in & out of everything and can handle all the questions?
b) Any steps that could be taken now to cease this fear of mine?

Re: Johnson Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Several entrepreneurs get into MBA programs with no managers taking about them.
There are several ways of building credibility.
The simplest being by showcasing your subject matter expertise in the essays and later in the interviews. The adcom is smart, there's a limit to what one can fake.
Second is via recommendations. As en entrepreneur, the best recommendations you can have are from clients or investors.
Third way is through actual proofs. I'm sure you have some paperwork to show your entrepreneurship experience- firm registration, partners, tax returns, income statements, website etc.
If all of your work experience is real, then the problem you have raised should be the least of your concerns.
Spend your energy on building a strong application and narrative around past experiences, future goals and the need of an MBA.

Hello Dileep346

Acads is strong, good past scores backed with a decent GMAT.
Work experience looks good too, I especially like how you're touching upon measurable results (cost savings, turnaround time, yearly savings). You will need to do exactly this in your essays to stand out in the technical crowd.
Extracurricular are interesting and diverse. Will add brownie points if you can show impact and transferable skills to other areas of your professional/personal life. How will these qualities make you a good addition to the batch and help you add value both inside and outside the classroom.
Any profile evaluation is incomplete without discussing career goals. This information, unfortunately, is missing.

If you can back the acads, experience and extracurricular with clear and realistic goals, my money's on you.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hi Akashvikram,

Academically your profile looks strong enough to be admitted to any of the programs you're interested in - really nice job on the GMAT! Looks like you have some very interesting and diverse experiences (professional and volunteer). It's great to have a large amount of different experiences, but keep in mind that it's also hard for a reader (or AdCom) to make sense of all of them, so I encourage you to think through your narrative and come up with a logical way of describing the experiences. On that note, you should also spend some time working through your post-MBA goals. Think about what challenges you want to address, what type of industry/company/role you'll be motivated in, and how each role will build on the prior one. It should be ambitious and compelling and you'll want to show your conviction by demonstrating a track record, or at least proof you know the space and can be successful. It takes time to develop these narratives, but it's going to be an important aspect of your application, and I'm happy to describe it more completely if you'd like to schedule a free consultation. All the best.

Hi kousiksurya93,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Your undergrad GPA is good. You didn't share much about your experience on the work front, but I'm assuming it to be good. You will need to share your startup experience and your career progression, which must demonstrate creativity, leadership, and brilliance. To increase your chances of selection to top-tier MBA programs, I recommend aiming for a score of 330+ in GRE. And you're a career switcher, you may want to read an article on how to justify your career switch to AdComs; this article will assist you in making a convincing case.

Overall, a good profile and have a shot at Jhonson. However, I'd like to learn more about your work experience, short and long-term goals, ECs, and so on to assess your chances. And, yes, you may keep top-tier programs on your list; but, since I don't know much about the rest of your profile, narrowing down certain schools for you is difficult. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and shortlist good schools for you. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!
