Hello everyone,
Will be greatful for a profile evaluation.
Indian male, 24
Gre - 169/161 Q/V

Stem full time Mba cornell

Undergrad 6.5/7 CGPA from a top 10 college in India as a bachelor's degree in Commerce, graduated in 2017. University of mumbai ( HR COLLEGE OF COMMERCE)

Other  certifications- US CFA ( above 90 percentile at all levels) , US CMA , US CPA , US CAIA ( Part 1 completed).

Few other investment and derivative certifications and courses along with the FMVA financial modelling course.

Worked full time during all three years of my college,
2 years as an investment analyst in a mid size firm (full time though might be considered as an internship)
1 year of articleship as an accountant in a mid tier accountancy firm ( since i did two levels of Chartered accountancy as well)

Post graduation,
Working in one of the top accountancy firms in my state , joined as an accountant but with pretty good performance, was promoted as the team leader within a year , managing a team of 8.
Well after working there for about 2 years, i had developed indepth knowledge of the biggest industry in that state ( mining and minerals) as they were our major clients and successfully started a new wing within my firm providing consulting and advisory service to MSME ( Micro small and medium enterprise).
Was a great success, bought in a chunk of clients bringing other business with them as well. Was promoted as the manager of the firm handling the entire msme consulting division along with the 20 employees that comes with it.

With respect to the social impact,  i am very happy and proud of the projects that i have successfully completed.
During my college days, was the head of the National service scheme, ( pretty big collaboration between colleges), though head of my own college.
Helped the workers and the domestic help to get themselves organised and worked with them forming a union registered with their local police stations bringing a regulation and oversight towards any wrongful treatment and exploitation against them.

For the past 4 years, I am a registered member of the heartfulness organization,  an education and spirituality organization, teaching the younger generation about the importance and understanding of spirituality. Have organized seminars all across the country  with an median attendance of about 2000-3000 people in every one of them.
Have been part of various initiatives such as the green kanha, wherein we strive and work towards environmental protection and preservation,  planting thousands of trees and having a means for water conservation for the use of agricultural.

On a side note- i created 2 firms in the mining and mineral line, using my skills and knowledge to grab a solid opportunity, (wanted to strategically use funds, selling one business at a good profit and utilizing that to run my other firm and making it a export oriented unit, this sale freed up my investment and helped my family come out of a tough financial condition). The important part of this venture was to make it a self sustaining source of incomenfor my family and form a partnership with the right kind of people having excellent business management skills and good hold at a local level. Hopefully everything till now went as planned.

Hi tga321,

To begin your profile evaluation, the first thing I would like to address here is your undergraduate GPA of 2.95 which unfortunately is a bit on the lower end of the spectrum. However, since you are applying for an MBA program which relies heavily on the kind and extent of work experience a candidate possesses, you need not pay heed to your low undergraduate grade. Adding to that, your GMAT score of 740 is quite impressive that should easily aid in overshadowing your low GPA while simultaneously unfolding opportunities to target top b-schools worldwide.

Talking about your work experience, you definitely have an upper hand since you have a 7+ years of professional experience complemented by big brand names under your CV. Looking at the information you have provided regarding your work experience, it is evident that you have held leadership positions in these companies which is always an added advantage since every school is on the lookout for candidates who possess the potential to be great future leaders. Having said that, you will be competing against applicants who adorn similar or better profiles than you which is why you need to ensure that you differentiate yourself from the applicant pool. To further enhance your profile you can talk about the kind of projects you spearheaded, duties you performed, and most importantly highlight what were your major takeaways.

Coming to your extracurriculars, you have a decent amount of extracurricular activities under your belt. For instance, your involvement with an NGO can be utilised to showcase how you are socially empathetic while your CFA certification and participation in toastmaster can be used to highlight your academic skills, as well your thirst for knowledge and vigour to constantly upskills yourself.

Moving on to the school that you are targeting , Cornell University’s Johnson school falls under the dream category where your chances of acceptance is a solid 50%. However, I would suggest that you hedge your bets wisely by targeting a good mix of 6-8 dream and competitive schools.

In the dream category you can consider; NYU, Wharton and UC Berkeley.
In the competitive category you can look at Duke, Vanderbilt, Michigan, UVA(where your chances of acceptance is 60%).

You can further boost your chances of acceptance by presenting a very strong application that will help you differentiate from the application pool. Your application would highlight your profile USP’s and overshadow any particular weaknesses in your profile. Moreover, you need to ensure that your LORs and Resume, equally depict the strengths of your profile.

That said, if you are contemplating over how to draft an impactful application, you can check out our All-in-one service, that is a complete end to end consulting process aimed at providing personalised application suggestions, unlimited editing service, and expert consultants who would constantly be there to help you throughout your application journey.

Hey jeetsethi09,

To commence your profile evaluation, I would say that your academic background is quite strong. Your GPA of 6.5/7 not only displays your academic prowess but also opens a lot of opportunities and doors to top business schools for you. Moreover, HR College of Commerce is a very prestigious school, and its brand name aids in strengthening your profile as Cornell tends to favor candidates from top schools of each country. As for your GRE, a score of 330 is pretty impressive and allows you to comfortably target top b-schools, including Cornell.

Moving on to your professional front if we talk about your full-time work during college it will still be considered an internship. Besides that, you have got a decent amount of work experience post your graduation. You haven’t mentioned the company name, but in case it’s not a global brand, you would be required to focus on the kind of roles you have undertaken, the projects you undertook, and the positive impact you were able to create during your stint. Also effectively showcasing your leadership skills in various endeavours can help you establish in the minds of the admission's committee that you are no less than your competition who would most likely be Big 4 candidates. Additionally, your entrepreneurial initiatives, while pretty impressive, goes on to vouch for your ability to go beyond your role, take on challenges and more importantly be an impactful leader.

Extracurricular activities are a way to showcase your proactive attitude and how you have emulated the theoretical knowledge you gained in classes and created a positive impact by utilizing them in real-life situations. Evaluating your extra-curricular activities, I’d say you have varied endeavors on this end, which portrays your proactive attitude and a balanced profile. Being a head of NSS during your undergrad and your continued endeavour directed towards creating a difference in the society portrays your strong leadership potential and highlights your capability to utilize your skills for the betterment of society and make a positive impact, traits that every b-school is on the lookout for.

All in all, you seem to have a well groomed profile and your chances of acceptance at Cornell stands at 50% given the competitive nature of the school. That said, in order to hedge your bets wisely, here are some school suggestions that you can look at in the dream and competitive category:

Dream: NYU, Berkeley, Wharton, MIT
Competitive: Duke, McCain, Michigan, UVA

In dream schools, your chances of acceptance are 50% whereas in competitive schools your chances of acceptance are 60-70%.

All things considered, you need to be mindful of the fact that you will be facing competition from equally good profiles. Hence, you need to complement your profile with a strong application. An application through its various components such as essays, LORs and SOPs would help you to highlight your strengths and give apt justifications for your weaknesses to smooth over any flaws in your profile. Moreover, the application acts as the window through which the admission committee can peer into your skills, calibre and your personality.

Thus, since the major chances of your admission depend on the quality of your application, you can thus check out our, All-in-One service - a comprehensive solution to all your application woes, to gain insights into how you can boost your chances of acceptance by a minimum of 3x!

Hi AkP1992,

Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations.

My name is Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO.

You have a very interesting profile! From what I can see:

Academics – good GPA. We would also like to know from where you did your undergrad and what was your class ranking (or percentile).

Work Experience –You have a good and different experience! The skills involved in the day-to-day activities show a handful of managerial skills. You need to make an impactful resume quantifying the results, leadership skills, etc.

Extracurricular activities/Volunteer Work – The leadership experience in college and being a Table Tennis player is interesting. Any volunteer work?

Your career goals - Your career goals look fine but will be able to give more insights once you share your CV.

Answer to your query – Do not worry about your old score. 😊 You have significantly improved, so it won’t affect your application in any way.

All in all sounds like you have a good profile! If you send me your CV and other info on PRIYANKAK@ARINGO.com, I would love to connect you with our CEO who will be happy to help further with a detailed review and perhaps work together on some amazing apps.

All the best. :)

Hi AkP1992,

Your profile looks good on the surface, with work experience being the highlight of your profile. Talking about your academics its good and along with your GMAT score, it defines your academic excellence. All together with a great narrative could have a shot at Johnson.

On the work front, you have a pretty good experience at AAI and Infosys. As an ATC you can exhibit the challenges you have faced and how you hit the ground, also I can see your day to day jobs highly emphasizes your alertness and decision making skills, taking decisions by properly analysing the situation. Your leadership experience in college as a CR could bring some good stories to enhance your apps. Besides, you can also talk about any hobbies you pursue that will bring diversity to your apps. Adcoms are really interested in knowing you beyond your profession, your actual personality.

Your post-MBA goal looks fine, but I need to know more to connect the dots between your post-MBA goal and prior work experience. About your query don’t worry it will not affect your profile in any way, remarkably you have improved your score.

Overall your profile is good and could have a fair shot at Johnson. If you like we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and gauge your fit for other b-schools as well! Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi sahilaro23,

Thanks for sharing such a detailed overview. Your profile minus the GMAT does look good on the surface.
I can clearly see leadership potential, growth and contribution to the community in your profile and I can absolutely relate to you mate, because I was a Product Manager too pre-MBA and wanted to continue my journey as a Product Manager post-MBA.

Though I can see that you belong to a very overrepresented pool (Indian-male-Engineers-wanting-to-become-consultants-or-product-managers), the good thing is that your short-term goal is very well aligned with your skills, insights and experience that you have built upon over the years.

A lot will now depend on how you integrate the same in your story and showcase your personality to justify your goals. I would also suggest you identify the gaps in your profile that only and only an MBA can help you bridge. It's really going to help you have a clear understanding on how you should project your story and convince the adcoms that the MBA is the only route for you.

A lot of us undermine the importance of personality in our applications and only focus on the professional experience only, to answer the essay questions, however this can play against you if you belong to an overrepresented pool. So, in your case I'd suggest you spend time to dig within yourself to answer if you match the values that Johnson looks for in an applicant. I am also happy to help you identify the same and evaluate your chances better with respect to the schools of your choice in a 1 hour session this week.

But, before we talk, I'd really ask you to go through the values that Johnson looks for in an applicant, and I am sure you will find the session more fulfilling.

Quoting the Johnson's values for you here (Just a little food for thought, buddy!):

"Excellence
Exceed standards and insist on the highest quality of execution in all we do. Research and innovate continuously. Courageously experiment with new ideas and approaches. Do the right thing; exhibit integrity and the highest ethical standards in all we do.

Inclusion
Embrace diversity in all its forms. Collaborate across disciplines and colleges. Celebrate one another’s contributions to the distinct missions of our three schools.

Engagement
Inspire students, alumni, and external partners through personalized, transformative interactions. Partner with all stakeholders for mutual gain. Instill an entrepreneurial spirit to pursue development and fulfillment.

Community
Foster unity through adaptability. Value one another’s missions with integrity and transparency. Engage with neighboring communities through service and stewardship. Show compassion through acceptance and consideration, and seek out ways to nurture growth.

Impact
Make a meaningful and positive difference in the world. Help students, staff, scholars, and organizations to flourish. Develop innovative solutions to pressing local and global problems."

Ohh, and yes! For the GMAT you gotta aim for 720+.

Cheers!

Hi sahilaro23,

I agree with the direction Shantanu described in terms of highlighting your personality and the fit. Likewise, I think creating a more specific long term goal, coupled with a mid-term career path plan can make you a more compelling candidate. All of these can be addressed through introspection, self-reflection and strategy work prior to starting your application. It's a worthwhile exercise and I encourage you to take the time (3-6 weeks) to really focus on this.

In terms of your GMAT score - that does make a difference and Johnson's average GMAT score is 700 with their 80% range between 640-740. So continue to focus on your study and progress there. There are other ways to show your academic prowess (specifically quant) - see this blog post:
5 Tips to Build your Quantitative Profile.

Hi @answesharath, looks like you have a strong profile.

Most top programs will look for 3-8 years of work experience at time of matriculation, so you're in good shape there. Also very importantly, your actual experience looks very strong as a start to your career. Continue to cultivate your recommender relationships as those are important parts of the application. The only element I'd encourage you to push for, which you didn't mention, is anything around international experience. This would help your overall professional experience profile.

Academics look strong - congrats on the top 5% finish! Keep focusing on the GMAT/GRE...that's point that the AdComs look for to validate academic aptitude, although I think targeting the 740 is a great goal.

I'd be interested in discussing your career aspirations in more depth. It's important to have clarity on why you're pursuing an MBA and why now is the right time. To help answer those questions, your short, mid and long term career goals should be ambitious, but laid out in a logical and achievable manner in which an MBA will be necessary. The application process will require considerable introspection, and many of my clients take several weeks to go through this process. If you're interested in having a conversation (which I suggest), please schedule a Free Consultation.
