Hi ShivExplores,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with the stats, your undergrad GPA is good. On the work front, your work experience must bring examples of leadership and impact. You will need to speak about the roles and responsibilities you have undertaken and the impact it has brought to the organization. I believe you will be able to provide many interesting stories from your work experience. Your hobbies are interesting, and they will help you add diversity to your apps. As you want to apply for a GMAT waiver, you must have a compelling reason for why you believe you should be granted one. For Johnson, you need to provide a 100-word essay on the same. You will also need to explain the reason for a second MBA and how MBA from Jhonson will help you fill the gaps in your profile. Overall your profile is good, but I’m not able to see any impact now. I would like to know more about your profile to analyze your realistic chances and find out major USPs in your profile which will help you to write your GMAT waiver request letter efficiently. You may want to read an article on how to write a successful GMAT waiver request letter, you will get some insights. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and gauge your fit for the school. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Re: Johnson Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hi! I was wondering if someone could evaluate my profile.

A medical doctor by background;
Undergrad in India MBBS: 3.92/4.0 - Gold Medallist
Started my career as a medical resident in oncology in Apollo Hospitals in India for 6 months before pursuing a research masters in regenerative medicine.
MSc in University College London - Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine GPA 3.8/4.0
Worked as a research assistant in UCL School of Pharmacy to creating a novel antibiotic for treatment - the antibiotic is currently in phase 2 trials. However, I am no longer involved in this.
During the same master's program, co-founded a spin-off for manufacturing novel urinary catheters and was accepted in an accelerator program. The company is continued by Kings College Medical Students while I remain in a medical consulting role.
Further to this, I was awarded a medical fellowship by the University Hospital Southampton Trust to rotate across Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine and Acute Medicine. Was working in the emergency department in the UK when COVID hit. Was a member of the COVID emergency relief team and part of the team to establish guidelines for COVID triage guidelines for the West of England which was later adopted by other hospitals in the surrounding region.
During the same period, passed exams and interviews and gained internal medicine resident (ranked in the top 5% among 3500 candidates) at the University of Cambridge, Addenbrookes Hospitals. As part of the program, I worked across Palliative Care, Acute Medicine, Respiratory Medicine and Transplant Medicine while treating COVID patients during COVID shifts.

The turmoil during the pandemic and my out-of-medicine experiences always drove me to pursue something regarding management to create an impact at scale. So, I have taken a year off from my residency program from Aug 2021 take a break from the hectic schedule and am preparing for GRE at the moment. My mock scores range from 315 to 322 currently and I have 22 days left for the exam.

Meanwhile, I am working as an engagement manager at Impact Consulting and have completed marketing strategy and consulting for a medical devices company.

Given my atypical background and non-existent quantitative math for the last 10 years since I began to pursue medicine, is there a good chance to get admitted into Cornell?

Total work experience: 4 years and 6 months. If I were to include my role at Impact Consulting, it would be a year.

Hi! I had applied to Cornell Tech MBA R1 (Class of 2023). Got waitlisted today. Can someone guide on what I can do to improve my chances of getting admitted?

Some highlights of my profile are -

GMAT : 730 (50, 40, 7)

Work-Ex : 6 yrs in Product Management. Started from Business Analyst. Currently at a Sr. PM level.

Companies : Start-ups in India across both B2B and B2C domains. Current company is an unicorn.

Personal Statement :Tied my work-ex in media tech with my goal of working on Blockchain in Media. Nothing exceptional, but could weave a narrative of why MBA and why Cornell Tech

LOR : From my previous manager who was the Co-Founder and CTO of my last company

Extracurriculars : Nothing striking. Have won a few national level quiz competitions while in college. And a couple of stints with local NGOs.

Scope of Profile Improvement : Not much. No new promotion or significant work project expected in the next few months. I doubt a higher GMAT score will help much, given that my score is higher than the average at Cornell Tech. (or might it?) Maybe a LOR from my current manager (who is also the CPO). Anything else that might bolster my chances?

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions!

I'm asking for an eval for the tech MBA (1 yr) degree at Cornell:

Background and nationality - Indian. Age 23
Undergrad Information - Econ Major from St Xavier's College, Mumbai University; CGPA - 3.45
GMAT- 740; V44 Q47

Work experience and leadership - 2.2 years full time work ex. I have 7 months experience in product marketing at a small home automation/security business and 1.7 years experience as a product analyst for an OTT platform in a big tech company (Jio) that required me to perform many product management duties as well (Platform ownership, sprint planning, project management)
I have additional 6 months work ex being an editor (not a full time role) and some months experience participating in organizing a college festival but doubt that would be relevant.

Post MBA goals - I would like build on my current foundation to pursue product management in the consumer internet industry

Anything else?
I am currently also doing a 7 month Post grad certificate in product management in India and learning the basics of Python (as part of the course)

My primary concern is if my work experience and the quality of it would be a deal breaker - and if not- if I would have limited scholarship opportunity because of it

Hi Sid,

Good work experience and goals sound relevant to the experience built so far. Given that you already have an MBA, Cornell's 1 year MBA is a good b-school selection. I am a little concerned about your academic scores though- A 730 GMAT would be considered average for an Indian applicant. Your undergrad and master's GPA are low, and overall, the adcom will not draw a strong image about your academic scores. Consider retaking GMAT and applying with a better score.

Hi sid9912,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your GMAT score is quite good for johnson. I see you've undertaken different roles and responsibilities. You must highlight the factors that demonstrate how you outperformed your peers. Highlight the roles you have taken on and for which you are accountable for maintaining the organization's integrity. I would suggest that you go deeper and show examples of times when you have stepped up to take on leadership roles. This will demonstrate leadership qualities in your application. Your ECs and interests are impressive and demonstrate your leadership abilities. Stories about adventure sports will add diversity to your apps. You may tell the story of how these experiences shaped your personality. Make sure you provide a compelling reason for why you want to get an MBA. You must discuss the gaps in your profile and how an MBA from Johnson would help you fill them and accomplish your goals. Overall, you have a good profile and a chance at Jhonson. However, in order to identify major USPs, I would need to learn more about your work profile. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to the b-schools. - Chairman at my student fraternity (mostly fencing stuff and drinking beers)

Post MBA goals:
Stay two more years at my firm (or another firm buys me out of my sponsorship). Afterwards very interested in transition for some years into PE/VC or IBD, also strategy consulting at an MBB. A highly responsible role in corporate strategy/development is the goal in the long term.

Anything else?
Plan to do the GMAT and try to apply as soon as possible to start the MBA after two (or three) years at my firm (to hopefully benefit from the firm's sponsorship).

HI somubarua13,

You have achieved quite a lot in your short career and young age. B-schools love to see early signs of leadership and having relevant experience should help you get a few admits if you submit stellar applications. Your internship is not going to be counted in full time work experience , so if you were to apply for next year's intake, your work exp would be just about 3 years, which is ok at most business schools. Its a matter of when is the right time for you to do an MBA. Overall, I like the level of responsibility you have had. During the application, you must back up your achievements with quantified impact to make a solid case for yourself.

You haven't mentioned your choice of b-schools, but this is going to remain an important element. Your GMAT score is average and its not going to help much if you are shooting for the 15-20 top MBA programs. If you can, go ahead and retake with a740+ GMAT as target.

ECAs- I didn't quite get if they are from College life or during work. It sounds like they are all related to the same event- the organizing of some event. If that's the case, i would like to see some diversity here- are there any other activities you are involved in 1. at college, 2. since the time you graduated from college?

Hello somubarua13,

Thank you for sharing your profile.

To begin with, a GMAT score of 710 is a strong score that will be competitive for many MBA programs. Your B.Tech in Electronics and Communication from Lovely Professional University is a solid educational foundation and a CGPA of 7.3 demonstrates a good academic performance.

Coming to your work experience, your work experience demonstrates career progression and increasing responsibilities within Board Infinity. Starting as a Program Analyst Intern and advancing to Associate Program Manager and Category Manager shows growth and development. Your current role as a Category Lead - Founder's Office, managing a team of 16 and handling multiple verticals, showcases your leadership abilities and ability to handle complex responsibilities. Your key responsibilities highlight your experience in team leadership, customer strategy, career coaching, profit and loss management, sales collaboration, product launch, strategic partnerships, and business strategy. These responsibilities demonstrate your diverse skill set and your ability to contribute to different aspects of the business.

Your involvement in the Department of Youth Capital and your role in organizing North India's biggest fest, Youthvibe, showcase your leadership and organizational skills outside of your professional experience.

Your goal of pursuing management consulting or business operations aligns well with an MBA degree and your prior experience. It's important to highlight how your current experience and skills will contribute to your post-MBA career goals.

Overall, your profile is strong, with a solid academic background, significant work experience, and demonstrated leadership skills. To further enhance
your application, consider highlighting specific achievements and quantifiable impact in your resume and essays. Additionally, obtaining strong letters of recommendation that highlight your leadership potential and impact will be valuable.
