Yes, apple:orange be 4:1 but this translates to Apple = 4*Orange and not 4*Apple = Orange

Let Orange be x
Apple = 4*Orange = 4x

0.15Apple + 0.10Orange = 420
=> 0.15*4x + 0.10*x = 420
=> 0.7x = 420
=> x = 600

So, answer will be B

Hope it helps!

Sue planted 4 times as many apple seeds as she planted orange seeds. 15 percent of the apple seeds grew into trees, and 10 percent of the orange seeds grew into trees. If a total of 420 apple trees and orange trees grew from the seeds, how many orange seeds did Sue plant?

A. 540
B. 600
C. 660
D. 720
E. 760

Shouldn't the ratio of apple:orange be 4:1 or 4A=O?

I follow that A = 4O, but if apple seeds are 15% and orange 10%, Why wouldn't it be .15(1)x + .1(4)x = .15x+.4x = 720?

Why the equation is not orange = 4 apples ? What is the best way to interpret such complicated statements into equations?

OA:B

Let the number of Apple seeds planted be \(A\).
Let the number of Orange seeds planted be \(O\).

\(A=4O\).....(1)

\(\frac{15}{100}A+\frac{10}{100}O=420\).....(2)

Substituting (1) into (2), we get

\(\frac{15}{100}*4O+\frac{10}{100}O=420\)

\(\frac{70}{100}O=420\)

\(O=\frac{420*100}{70}=600\)
