Hi can anyone help me analyse my ESR

Some context:
I've been getting a 740 in all my GMAT mocks. I've taken 4.
So during my actual test in the verbal section I got extremely anxious and stopped processing information in front of me and instead started panicking and guessing questions from the beginning. When CR questions came up my brain felt like it was on mute and I couldn't reason ANY of the answer choices.
From this I've understood I need to find a way to control my anxiety during the test and also need to do timed sections a LOT more so I don't freeze the next time.
But besides this anything that y'all may notice that I don't and think I need to improve on please let me know.

My next test will be my last attempt so I want to be prepared.
Any advice for quant will also be appreciated.

Hi MGM1996.

Other than your weakness in CR, which you addressed in your post, the only obvious things that jump out from your ESR are that you didn't get any Geometry questions correct and that you may have spent more time on Geometry questions than other types of quant questions. So, if you have time over the weeks before your next test and want to increase your quant score, working on Geometry may be a good move.

Regarding the shutdown that you experienced, one thing I've noticed is that, while reducing anxiety is certainly a good idea, it's also good to learn to handle anxiety if you experience it by taking a deep breath, reminding yourself that you do know how to answer the questions, and getting busy carefully answering questions. In other words, panicking and guessing on questions can make you even more anxious, whereas being clear in your mind that you can handle the test and seeking to clear your head by focusing on the question in front of you can cause the anxiety to go into the background and eventually subside.

You can see anxiety as a wave that you can ride out. It may feel intense for a moment, but if you focus on getting correct answers and don't feed the anxiety, then the wave will recede.

Also, yes, doing more timed practice will help, and you can also visualize yourself taking the actual GMAT under time pressure, feel the anxiety associated with that experience, and practice riding it out, doing a sort of exposure therapy.

Hi Marty, 
Thankyou so much for the advice. 
I will definitely work on Geometry as well as my anxiety. 
And i will employ these techniques on my next mock. 
I do have a few questions - In this ESR my SC is at 38 and RC at 40, does this mean my actual skills are also at this level or is it a possibility that because i tanked CR i never got tougher questions? 
Secondly, to further improve my score in a short duration (2 weeks) should i focus on improving quant or verbal? Or both equally? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I'm not sure whether the difficulties of SC, CR, and RC questions move up and down separately or together. So, I don't have an exact answer to your question. However, I just checked the ESR of someone who was weak in both CR and RC but performed similarly to you in SC, and his SC score was 40. So, I'm leaning toward the idea that the three scores on the three types of verbal questions work separately.

Also, I can say that your accuracies in SC and RC, both of which appear to be a little over 80 percent, basically match a score around 40, because getting 40 in the verbal section overall normally takes getting around 80 percent of the questions correct.

I'd say both.

You can improve in CR by learning a few key approaches to working your way through the questions and improve in SC and RC by continuing to practice. You don't have to go crazy in verbal, just get CR straight and improve your overall approach to verbal and accuracy some.

Then, in quant, you could continue to do some mixed practice while focusing on some key weaker areas such as Geometry and any other question types that you feel less confident in. Over the course of a couple weeks, you could really nail down some quant stuff that you haven't gotten around to mastering yet.

For CR, working on a method to Engage with the text can be helpful. Pattern recognition (i.e. the SOME answer choices) can help narrow down your search to make solving more efficient. It's not only about the fundamentals on GMAT Verbal. Similar to Quant, it's perhaps fair to say the way you approach questions is important. As it happens, one of the most popular things I get approached for on the Verbal end is for Solving Approach - not fundamentals like subject/verb, etc.

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though - and the data in your ESR - it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?
