just need to find the point with the distance 3 from the center of the circle. choices A, C and E can be eliminated by just looking at the approximate postion in the figure.
In the figure to the right, the circle is centered at the origin and passes through point P. Which of the following points does it also pass through
A. (3,3)
B. (-2sqrt2, -1
C. (2,6)
D. –sqrt3,sqrt3
E. -3,4
No need for any complex calculations here. Since drawing is given just POE which answer choices CANNOT be correct.
A. (3,3) tempting, but no. draw the point, the circle can't be on this spot.
B. -2sqrt2 Anytime you see a sqrt 2 you should know that it aproximetly equals to 1.4 so x= -2*1.4--> -2.8(aprox) y=-1. Mark this point. This one is looking really good, and if ur pressed for time you might want to just answer this one.
C. 2,6. no way. Y=6 is too far outside the circle
D. You have to KNOW the aproximations for sqrt 2 and sqrt 3. sqrt3 aprox= 1.7. GMAT uses these numbers too often not to know this. So the coordinates are -1.7,1.7. Mark this point (aproximate it) you will see that this lies inside the circle. So it is incorrect
E. -3,4... again just mark the point, you will see Y is to great for this point to be crossed by the circle
