Re: Some meteorologists have insisted that the severity of the drought in [#permalink]
VeritasKarishma,
Can you kindly explain Q6. I thought the answer is C. As, the temperature at the Northern Hemisphere increases, the coolingness will come down and the difference between the temperature at the Northern Hemisphere and the sub-Saharan will come down.

Hi sunny91,

6. A proponent of the cooling hypothesis would most likely argue that the return of the monsoon rains to sub-Saharan West Africa would indicate that which one of the following has also occurred?
(C) The average annual temperature of the atmosphere over the tropics in the Northern Hemisphere has increased.- incorrect

between 1945 and the early 1970s, the average annual air temperatures over the landmasses of the Northern Hemisphere decreased by about half a degree Fahrenheit

So as per option C, if the average annual temperature of the atmosphere over the tropics in the Northern Hemisphere has increased, then the temperature differential between the unusually cool middle and high latitudes and the warm tropical latitudes will INCREASE further (causing a southward expansion of the circumpolar vortex, which will displace northward-moving monsoon)

The increasing temperature differential between middle and high latitudes and tropical latitudes will INCREASE further, intensifying the effects. ( The severity of drought will increase)

Hope this helps! :)

#3 is a little bit tricky.

SajjadAhmad wrote:
3. According to the passage, proponents of the cooling hypothesis suggested that the circumpolar vortex is likely to expand when which one of the following occurs?

(D) There is a significant increase in the difference between the average annual atmospheric temperature of the tropics and that of the more northern latitudes.
(E) There is a significant increase in the difference between the average annual atmospheric temperatures of the middle and the high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere.

The difference between (D) and (E) is vital.

Let's look at the passage:

SajjadAhmad wrote:
supporters of the cooling hypothesis
(30) have argued that a growing temperature differential
between the unusually cool middle and high
latitudes and the warm tropical latitudes is causing
a southward expansion of the circumpolar
vortex

The passage says that the cooling is due to the difference between the cool middle and high latitudes vs the warm tropical latitudes.

(D) says the difference in temperature between the tropics (warm) and the more northern latitudes (cold). Correct

(E) says the difference in temperature between middle and high latitudes (cold). Incorrect

Some meteorologists have insisted that the severity of the drought in [#permalink]
Hi everyone,
Got 5/6 correct in 12:30 minutes, including 5:30 minutes to read, write down paragraphs' summaries and main point.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

P1
firs of all we are given a fact: the drought that hit the sub saharan west africa is indicative of LT climate alteration. Also we know that there are many hypothesis but only one has gained popularity. The latter state that the drought is due to a decrease in temperature in the northern hemisphere. This decrease is due to the dust resulting from volcano's eruption and industrial activity, dust that blocks part of the sun rays and hence decreases the temperature slightly. Last we are given that this phenomena hits the northern hemisphere more than the tropics because the sun rays enter the atmosphere through a greater angle in the northern hemisphere than in the tropics

Brief summary: Drought in Sub Sahran WA is caused by climate alteration and an hypothesis is given and partially explained

Questions: How does the decrease in temperature in the northern hemisphere relate to the drought in the sub saharan west africa? Probably the next paragraph will answer this question

P2

As we pre-though a linkage between the decrease in temperature and the drought condition is established.
First we are given that winds are conditioned by air pressure and air pressure is conditioned by the difference in temperature between two zones. So we can infer that winds are influenced by the differential in terms of temperatures between 2 areas.
Now the difference between the tropics and the northern hemisphere has increased according to the theory at hand and it has displaced a wind (westerly wind) that draw away the northern monsoon, which usually brings rain. So now we know how the decrease in temperature influenced the drought condition.
Furthermore proponents say that the drought will worsen since in the northern hemisphere there will be more and more snow, which will cool down even more the temperature.

Brief summary: a linkage between the decrease in temperature and the drought conditions is given

P3

Last paragraph casts doubts on the hypothesis by presenting actual facts that contradict the hypothesis itself

Brief summary: the hypothesis is undermined

Main point

The main point of the passage is to suggest an explanation for the severe drought conditions in the sub Saharan west Africa and to undermine that explanation

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------.

1 Which one of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?

Pre-thinking

Main point question

last paragraph says otherwise

(B) The suggestion that Northern Hemisphere cooling is contributing to a decline of rainfall in sub-Saharan West Africa is open to question.
In line with prethinking

(C) The expansion of the circumpolar vortex has caused a dramatic shift in the atmospheric circulation patterns above sub-Saharan West Africa.

(C) growing ambivalence
ambivalence means that the author has contradictory feelings. clearly she does not have these

(D) guarded enthusiasm

Explanation

6. A proponent of the cooling hypothesis would most likely argue that the return of the monsoon rains to sub-Saharan West Africa would indicate that which one of the following has also occurred?

Difficulty Level: 700+

Explanation

Lines 36-40 indicate that those who endorse the “cooling hypothesis” believe that the sub-Saharan drought has been caused by a shift in normal wind patterns. This shift, they contend, has kept monsoon rains from reaching the sub-Saharan region. Thus, they would probably say that the return of such rains means that wind patterns have returned to normal.

(A) Opposite. According to supporters of the “cooling hypothesis,” an increase in ice and snow coverage would be likely to keep the rains at bay.

(B) Opposite. Again, according to hypothesis advocates, such a development would likely perpetuate the sub-Saharan drought.

(C) Hypothesis advocates never directly link conditions in the tropics with sub-Saharan rain.

(D) Another Opposite. Lines 36-40 identify this development as part of the causal chain of sub-Saharan drought.
