The formula F=9/5*C + 32 gives the relationship between the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit, F, and the temperature given in degrees Celsius, C. If the temperature is 85 degrees Fahrenheit, what is the temperature, to the nearest degree, in degree Celsius?

A. 18C
B. 23C
C. 29C
D. 47C
E. 51C
Alternative approach, work around by plugging in the options as this question talks about approximate values

Use options (C) the middle value ( As the options are in ascending order )

\(F=\frac{9}{5}*C + 32\)

Or, \(30*\frac{9}{5} + 32 = 86\)

Thus, answer must be (C)

Here, since the values are far apart, approximation can be helpfu

\(F = \frac{9}{5} * C + 32 = 1.8C + 32\)

Now, if we take 1.8C as 2C, this becomes easy. Substituting for the values, we see which is closest to 85 (we must remember that the actual value will be a little lesser than what we have actually got).



Option A: C = 18. Then F = ( 2 * 18) + 32 = 36 + 32 = 68


Option B: C = 23. Then F = ( 2 * 23) + 32 = 46 + 32 = 78


Option C: C = 29. Then F = ( 2 * 29) + 32 = 58 + 32 = 90 => This is closest to 85


We can check the other options, but it becomes unnecessary after this point.

F = \(\frac{9}{5}\) * C + 32

=> \(\frac{(5)(F - 32) }{ 9}\) = C

=> \(\frac{(5)(85-32) }{ 9}\) = C

=> C = 29
